Hi, We’d like to visit the Alpes de Haute-Provence for 2 weeks with our 2 (adult) kids. Any ideas for things to see and do? Where should we choose our accommodation (house only) to be centrally located for sightseeing? We’re looking for villages with restaurants and bakeries. Thanks in advance for your tips! Best regards

Hi there! I’d recommend Castellane—it’s got shops and the Verdon Gorge is nearby. Otherwise, most of the other villages are quite small with few amenities. Even Digne isn’t very big for a prefecture town.

You’re really spoiled for choice!

Castellane is a bit out of the way but very pleasant. The department’s main town is Digne-les-Bains.

And with some great roads, Manosque, Forcalquier, Oraison, Château-Arnoux—really the whole Durance Valley. The Valensole plateau, with Riez for example. Moustiers is a bit too touristy (and expensive) for my taste, so I’d avoid it. Above Forcalquier, Banon, with its famous bookshop and the best goat cheese in France… ;)

In my opinion, staying near the Durance Valley would be a smart choice, but that’s just my take. As for bakeries and restaurants, you’ll find all the comforts in the villages of this beautiful department—no worries there.

Hi, The Alps around Colmar are also stunning. The mountains are gorgeous all around... Generally speaking, along the Verdon River (the Daluis Valley too).

If you’d like to get an idea of the area, check this out: (11 pages) https://spottingaviation.forumactif.com/t15467-le-long-du-verdon-septembre-2023

I also highly recommend Colmars-les-Alpes, both for the town itself and for the great hiking opportunities in the surrounding area.
