September 2026 Photo Contest Discussion Thread: "The Street as a Livelihood"

Hi there, For the photo contest, can we submit a photo we didn’t take ourselves?! I’ve spotted a black-and-white one that’s a bit old!

Can we submit film photos from the early 2000s that have been lightly edited to enhance the vintage feel?

(A country changes in 25 years... So in 50, like some people’s memories...)

Uh... I don’t know what the usual rules of this photo contest are. I’ve only been participating for a few months, and this is the first time I’m organizing a theme. But before a contest veteran answers this, I’d say no...

KA Kate Globetrotter ·
You posted the same message twice 😄 (Back-to-school fatigue getting to you, huh?)

I’m not sure if the term "old-timer" fits me quite yet, but since when could we submit a photo that isn’t ours in a photo contest? 🤪 Maybe in the parallel discussion, as long as we credit the author’s name.

Kate, heads up—I posted the same message twice... well, almost!
AT Attila Globetrotter ·
Djalma thinks I didn’t take the photo I posted because I’m not old enough.

He forgets that places change so quickly that even at 57, you can post photos that look much older.

What about the places we visited in the 70s... 😇

Pagaljavab is playing it safe politically, trying to please everyone with his "neither yes nor no." 😄

I didn’t say yes or no—I said no to the first question and yes to the second while waiting for expert opinions to confirm.
AT Attila Globetrotter ·
There are no experts here.

Just people having fun with a photo contest.

The winner sets the rules for their contest.

Otherwise, what's the point of winning a contest?😄

PA Pagaljavab Globetrotter ·
I get it, but I’m not familiar with the customs... Letting the winner choose the theme and framework is one thing. Allowing them to decide we can submit photos we’re not the author of—or why not, drawings—is another. I imagine we still need to stick to some basic principles. Have these questions even been raised before?

Anyway... Obviously, no photos we’re not the author of in the contest, even though it’s actually unverifiable. And being able to touch up an old film photo seems logical to me—we can edit digital photos, after all. Then, it’s up to each voter to judge whether the edits look natural enough, if they create an artistic effect, etc...
AT Attila Globetrotter ·
Personally, I think the winner can do whatever they want.

When it comes to touch-ups and effects, it really is a matter of taste.

Generally, over-saturation is what’s harmful. A string-light effect.

But it works sometimes!

I find touch-ups and effects kind of fun to do. It’s a bit of a brain-teaser.

You start to understand better once you begin exploring certain photos and tricks.

In the series “question for the organizer,” I’ve got one: should we see one or more people in the photo? It’s after seeing the food truck image shared by Bibouns

Yeah, you're right—some of the clothing details show the photo is actually from the 90s or early 2000s, not the 50s like I thought

We're getting off track here! When you enter any kind of contest, it's always with your own work (photo, book, watercolor, craft)... unless you're Émile Ajar winning the Goncourt or Donald Trump with university degrees ;).

Of course, I didn’t intend to share a photo from another member—it was just to liven up the thread and tease Raga, whom I’ve known for ages. I’ve been admiring all his photos for at least 15 years, ever since the first contests. If I remember correctly, the member Lahaut was the one who started the very first contest. JULIE

It's not just about the food vendors!

Absolutely, let's not limit ourselves to food stalls (which are, of course, totally on theme), but don't forget beggars, artists, everything Kate mentioned, Attila's Thai cop, and so much more... Scrolling through our albums, I'm sure some of you will find shots you hadn't thought of.

Hello

Here’s a special case: a railway track taken over by cafés and street markets between train passages. Train Street in Hanoi—it’s literally called a street, so it fits the contest 😇

Il n'y a pas de problème sans solution... et si il n'y a pas de solution, il n'y a pas de problème !

But I don’t see the photographers’ names or the photo numbers in this slideshow?

I had less luck with a repair in Cairo. (A heel that broke right in the middle of a visit)

But I didn’t pay anything...

It was a technician from a film crew shooting in the area. A Copt who got offended when I pulled out my wallet...

It still held up for the rest of the trip, though.

No photos!

Hi Agnès, We’re going old-school—we’ll vote for three PHOTOS without knowing the photographer, just give the number in the slideshow, like "I vote 3 points for the 13th." Sure, there’ll be grumblers and complainers, as usual. JULIE

Funny, when I told you earlier in the discussion that you’d definitely find an interaction scene you’d master (which you did with your photo 1, by the way), I almost added, "And you must have a photo of that street cobbler Richard gave half a month’s salary to for polishing a shoe?" In the end, I held back because I was afraid you’d take it the wrong way. But thanks to you, it’s all good now 😄

My partner’s shoes lasted two more trips—such an effective repair!

So it was almost worth those 2000 rupees 😊

AT Attila Globetrotter ·
Wait, 2000 rupees?

There's an extra zero, right?

How come 2000 rupees?

There’s an extra zero, right?

Pagal went a little overboard—Richard gave the guy the equivalent of 10 € (who then followed him everywhere for 2 days). I wanted to post this photo in the contest, but it’s blurry 🙁

5 times too much instead of 10... And I’m still being generous...

Hi, Joomeo was "sold" to Photoweb/Cloud, and now we really don’t have access to the famous EXIF data anymore. I’ll look into the issue with Photoweb support. If EXIF info isn’t visible anymore... we’ll have to vote for photos the old-school way (e.g., photo 13 gets 3 points) due to technical constraints. That also means more management work for me. :/ You can see the photo number at the top of the image, or if you click on a photo in the filmstrip at the bottom of the screen. JULIE
