Hello, My husband and I are thinking of going to Oman around October or November. Our baby will be 11 or 12 months old then. Do you think it’s doable? We’d like to visit quite a few cities over about two weeks and do a bit of desert. Do you think it’s possible with a baby that age? Besides Muscat, can we easily find diapers? Can we rent a car seat there? Thanks in advance for your replies

Hi! I’ll mainly answer about the climate—by September/October, the temperature becomes bearable. However, taking a baby on desert tracks in a rented 4x4 is something I’d advise against. The poor little one will be jostled and bumped around quite roughly at times. On the other hand, paved roads are no problem. For diapers, bring a small stock, but you can find them everywhere in village shops.

Thanks for your reply. Do you know if they provide car seats? Can we reach the desert gates and walk on the sand dunes? (I’ve never been to a desert)

Hi, regarding car seats, I’ve never had an issue there, but you can just check with the rental agencies to confirm (it’s listed on their questionnaire when you request a quote). As for sand and desert, no problem at all—once you leave the paved road, it’s sand on both sides, except for the rocky areas, and of course, beautiful dunes. You can walk around on foot without any issues. But most importantly, for any walk longer than half an hour, bring water, because you dehydrate very quickly, especially when the sun is beating down.

Hi,

Last October, it was 42°C in full sun in the desert by late morning—still not the hottest part of the day... Climbing even a few dunes was really tough... so for a 12-month-old baby, I’d definitely avoid it.

The desert isn’t going anywhere. Let your little one grow a few more years, then try the experience then... 😉

Otherwise, we could also shift the trip to November. I’d like to avoid school holidays, so traveling with him while he’s little seemed better—and then if baby #2 comes along later... 😊😉 But I’m taking your info into account. The most important things for me are seeing at least one castle, the Grand Mosque in Muscat, and a wadi

Hi, Did you end up fulfilling your wish to go to the desert with your baby? We’re heading there in mid-November with a 15-month-old, and the comments you received at the time are making me a bit doubtful about our desert plans. Thanks in advance.
