Two weeks (or more!) with the family in Lofoten

Hi there.

We’re planning a trip to Lofoten in July 2021 with our two kids, who’ll be 11 and 8. We’ve already booked our accommodations (yes, we’re planners!): - the first week in Reine. - the second in Henningsvær.

The idea is to explore the southern part of the archipelago, which seems the most interesting based on all the research I’ve done.

We’ve been considering extending our trip by another week. What would you recommend? Staying an extra week in Lofoten? Heading to Senja Island? The Lyngen Alps? Or somewhere else entirely?

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Cyril

The Kungsleden in Sweden isn't too far from the Lofoten Islands, perfect for mountain hiking and staying in mountain huts. I combined both in one trip.

Thanks Pierre for your feedback, but after thinking it over, I think we’ll spend our third week on Senja Island.

I have a logistical question: is it best to land at Bodø Airport, rent a vehicle there, and then fly out from Tromsø Airport? From what I’ve seen, the drop-off fees (returning the car in a different location) are pretty steep.

Or should we land at Bodø Airport, rent a vehicle there, and fly out from the same place? But between Senja Island (where we’d end our trip) and Bodø, it’s about a 7-hour drive...

Another option would be to arrive and depart from Narvik Airport, starting with Senja (first week), then Henningsvær (second week), and finally Reine (third week). That way, I’d avoid an extra ferry crossing.

What do you think?

Indeed, drop-off fees for a rental car in a different location are usually very high in Norway. It's better to pick up and return the car at the same place. With your itinerary, I think Narvik/Evenes is a good option (and until now, there could be some reasonably priced tickets compared to Bodø at least, but we'll have to see which airlines will still be operating in a few months...).

True, given the cancellation fees, we’ll arrive and depart from Narvik Airport. We’ll spend the first week in Senja, the second in Henningsvær, and the third in Reine. It feels more logical this way, and we were a little worried about getting "burned out" (with lots of air quotes) if we ended in Senja.

Regarding accommodation in Senja, which area should we prioritize to best explore the region, given that our main activity will be hiking? I’ve spotted a few places on Airbnb in the northern tip of the island, but fewer in the west, which also looks interesting. Thanks for your feedback!

Senja is gorgeous. I'm not sure about accommodation since I usually camp or use DNT huts. To get around easily, the best is to stay near Fjordgård.

Thanks Claire for your feedback. Actually, I'm torn between staying in the north of the island (for example near Fjordgård to be close to Segla) or on the west side of the island.

One thing that can make a huge difference—and unfortunately, it's out of our control—is the weather! I went in August 2018 for 3 weeks, roughly 13 days in the Lofoten Islands and then 5 days in Senja. As a hiker, I could’ve easily stayed an extra week in the Lofoten without getting bored, but it was more than enough time to avoid rushing around the archipelago like so many people do. After two weeks of rain while wild camping, I’ll admit I hit a bit of a slump where I wondered if maybe fifteen days would’ve been enough after all :) In the end, my last days in Senja were under gorgeous sunshine, and I had no regrets!

In short, I think the Lofoten + Senja combo is perfect, especially over 3 weeks. It’d be a shame, in my opinion, to go farther when there’s so much beauty to see right next door, and these two destinations complement each other so well.

For my part, I arrived and departed from Tromsø Airport, where I picked up and dropped off the rental car.

You’ll find all the details in my travel journal: https://www.destinationsdejulie.fr/destinations/norvege/roadtriplofotensenja

It’s one of my most beautiful trips—you’re going to love it! :)

Hi Julie. Thanks for your feedback. Your message confirms our plan to stay at least two and a half weeks in the area: 3-4 days or even a week in Senja, then two weeks in the Lofoten Islands. For now, I’ve planned a round-trip flight from Paris to Narvik, which avoids a very long final leg of 540 km and 8 hours of driving to get back to Tromsø Airport from Reine, where we’ll end our trip. I’m keeping your travel journal link safe—I’m really struggling to find info on hikes in Senja!

Good evening. Better late than never.

Here’s my feedback on our trip to the Lofoten Islands, which was canceled in 2021 (COVID) and 2022 (SAS airlines strike) but finally happened in 2023! And honestly, it was worth the wait—we had two amazing weeks with incredible weather!

To explore as much as possible, we stayed one week in Leknes and another in Sørvågen. It was a great choice: Leknes is accessible and well-supplied with shops, while Sørvågen lets you focus on the southern part of the Lofoten Islands, which is the most spectacular.

Our main activity was hiking—we went there primarily for that. Many hikes were fantastic: Himmeltindan, which lives up to its name "summit of the sky," Festvågtind with its breathtaking view of Henningsvær, the summit of Skrova Island (one of my 😇favorites[/angélique]), the midnight sun at the top of Mount Hoven, the very photogenic Volandstinden, Offersøykammen in the evening, the lovely coastal walk between Nesland and Nusfjord, Brunakseltinden at the end of the fjord, Andstabben with its stunning viewpoint over the southern tip of the Lofoten Islands and Værøy Island, and finally Reinebringen, which needs no introduction. Honestly, I could list them all! If you want to know more, I’ve compiled them all on my website: https://treksrandos.fr/

Some beaches were also exceptional, like Haukland (where it was 26°C), Hovsvika at midnight, Bunes with its end-of-the-world feel, and Rørvik under another very generous sun.

We also drove all the way to Andenes (an 8-hour round trip!) for a whale-watching "safari." We didn’t see any whales or sperm whales, but we did spot a nice group of pilot whales. However, one evening on our way back from Reine, we saw a pod of orcas very close to the shore. Amazing!

I’ll share some photos in a follow-up message.

Hello,

What a wonderful trip, and thank you for sharing your feedback! 🙂

Did you end up visiting Senja Island as well? I’m actually planning a week-long trip in mid-June and can’t decide between the Lofoten Islands and Senja. The photos of the Lofoten Islands look more appealing, but I’m worried it might be too crowded to be enjoyable (packed parking lots, lots of hikers, etc.). So, while continuing my research, I came across Senja Island, which seems less busy but still beautiful (though the photos I’ve seen of Vesterålen are less tempting).

Since you’ve seen both, I’d love to hear your thoughts! 😉

Thanks in advance, Max

Hello. No, in the end, we didn’t go to Senja. We decided to focus our two weeks on the Lofoten Islands, and honestly, we didn’t regret it—there are *so* many amazing sights on this stunning archipelago! Even if Senja is still in the back of my mind, especially that famous Segla rock... As for the "crowds" in the Lofoten Islands, it’s all relative! I never felt overwhelmed at any point. And yet, I was there in July, during school holidays. There are a few more people at the southern tip of the Lofoten Islands (Reine, Å), but as a Breton, I can tell you it’s *way* more manageable than Saint-Malo or Mont Saint-Michel! The only hikes I found really busy were Reinebringen and, to a lesser extent, Festvågtind. But Senja is definitely even quieter...

Hi Cyril,

Thanks for the reply—it’s reassuring! So we’ll head to the Lofoten Islands instead of Senja 😉

Now we just need to decide whether to stay near Ballstad for 5 nights or split it into 3 nights near Reine and 2 nights near Henningsvær.

Thanks for the link to the hikes… you’ve been busy… well done 😎

Hi,

We land in Narvik (EVE), and I was thinking of spending a night nearby on the way there and back. So that leaves me with just 5 nights directly on the islands. Even though we land at 12:50 PM, we could consider heading straight to the Lofoten Islands... since the sun doesn’t set ;).

Honestly, after landing in Narvik at 12:50 PM, I’d recommend heading straight to Henningsvær (about a 3-hour drive) to make the most of the Lofoten Islands.

Ok, that works for me too... and boom, one more day gained. I was thinking 3 nights, either around Henningsvær or on the north coast (toward Laukvik).

Then 3 nights either near Reine or on the other side toward Fredvang.

Thanks for your help! 🙂

Henningsvær seems less isolated than Laukvik, especially with Svolvær nearby, which has services and shops. After that, if you're mainly looking for isolation...

For the southern part, Reine is really the most touristy town, at the entrance to the archipelago's most spectacular fjords. Fredvang is much quieter and also has an interesting location: Kvalvika, Ryten (I couldn’t go, my biggest regret), Volandstinden... are all nearby.
