Visiting Japan in the summer for O-Bon festival

Hi everyone,

Next summer, we (2 adults and a 12-year-old child) have decided to visit Japan.

Admittedly, it’s still early to plan everything, but my wife will soon need to request her vacation time—either in August or July... and we’re hesitating.

I know summer isn’t the ideal time to visit Japan, but we don’t really have a choice... It’s either July or August. On one hand, I’d love to experience the O-Bon festivities from August 14th to 16th, and I’ve drafted an initial itinerary that would let us experience the Gujo Hachiman Bon Odori, possibly visit the Okunoin Cemetery in Koyasan, and be in Kyoto on the 16th for the Gozan Okuribi fires. But on the other hand, I’m worried it’ll be *packed*, especially in Kyoto, and less enjoyable than in July. So, have any of you experienced these celebrations? Are they worth it? Too crowded? Do you know of other celebrations or festivals in July? Thanks for your input!

Between August + Obon and July + the rainy season, for me, the choice is easy. I went for 7 years in a row in August—absolute bliss. Just a few nights in Kyoto weren’t the easiest (30°C!)

Gozan no Okuribi—that’s what I call Daimonji. It’s packed, but since it’s in the distance, you can still see it well, and it’s pretty cool. A few days earlier, there’s the lantern festival in Nara, where the roof of the Daibutsu-den opens to reveal the Buddha’s head. Breathtaking!

A few days earlier, there’s the Lantern Festival in Nara, where the roof of the Daibutsu-den opens to reveal the Buddha’s head. Absolutely stunning...

Thanks for the feedback!

Okay, that confirms my hunch... It’ll probably be in August, then.

Oh, Nara... It’s on my itinerary, but I’d completely forgotten about the Lantern Festival. What day is it? The only info I can find online is: "during the Obon festivities," but I can’t find the specific date!

Any info on Gujo Hachiman?

Thanks! ありがとう

What day is it?

I don’t have access to my photos, so I don’t have the dates, but from memory, it was two days before—like the 14th and 16th.

Any info on Gujo Hachiman?

No, I’ve never been there.

Hi there,

We have a travel journal (still not finished) and photos on our site here, but here are a few festivals we attended:

- In Kyoto, the Gion Matsuri, which we really loved. (Travel journal day_5)

- In Gujo, the Gujo Odori Bon Dance Festival, which still took place despite bad weather. A ghostly spectacle in the rain. (Travel journal day_8)

- In Kusatsu Onsen, the Kusatsu Onsen Appreciation Festival, a wonderful discovery we adored. (Travel journal day_13)

Hi there. A lovely page and some really beautiful photos. I’ve only had a quick look so far, but I’ll dive in more thoroughly as soon as I get a moment. Thanks!

Okay, vacation booked for August—I’m sketching out the itinerary and a rough budget for now...

While checking flight prices, I realized that Madrid → Beijing then Beijing → Tokyo is cheaper than flying straight to Tokyo. (Madrid because we live in Spain.) Almost 100 € less per flight, and since there are three of us... that’s a 300 € saving right there!

So we’ll spend 2 days in Beijing 😎 before tackling 14 days in Japan. We can see the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, etc. I’ll post a thread in the "China" forum in due time.

Anyway, more or less, here’s what we’re thinking:

August 8: Arrival at Tokyo NRT (I know, not as cool as Haneda, but no choice) at 1:00 PM. I think we’ll have time to visit Senso-ji (if not, the next day), then Shinjuku / Omoide Yokocho.

August 9: Senso-ji (if not done the day before) / Ueno (maybe see the pandas at the zoo) / Akihabara / Book Dawn Avatar Robot Café (a bar with robots).

August 10: Tsukiji / Ginza / Kokyo (Imperial Palace) / Afternoon: Meiji Shrine / Harajuku / Shibuya.

August 11: Day trip to Nikko. On the way back, book the Skytree for sunset.

August 12: Train to Takayama. Look for a ryokan.

August 13: Takayama → Shirakawago → Gujo: Arrival in the late afternoon/evening for the Bon Odori.

August 14: Early morning departure for Kyoto. Arrival around noon: Visit Eikando-ji, Nanzen-ji, and Gion. Kiyomizu-dera in the evening (during O-Bon, it’s open at night, lit by lanterns) and Otani Hombyo at night (a temple with a cemetery, illuminated during O-Bon).

August 15: Day and evening in Nara. (Thanks for the tip, Masterpro 😉). Attend the O-Bon festivities there.

August 16: Visit Nijo Castle in the morning, then head straight to Arashiyama. Apparently, it’s the best place to see the Daimonji.

August 17: Third day in Kyoto. Fushimi Inari and Kinkaku-ji. Return to Gion/Pontocho in the evening.

August 18: Train to Himeji. Visit the castle in the morning and Fukusaki in the afternoon. Fukusaki is a small town near Himeji that created a Yokai (Japanese folklore monsters) "trail" around their town. My son is obsessed with Yokai (and mythology in general), so I know there are more interesting things to do in Japan... But hey, it’s our thing. 😉

August 19: Train from Himeji to Tokyo. We’ll arrive around noon. Book visits to TeamLab Planet and Miraikan in Odaiba. Take the boat bus to get there or return.

August 20: Day trip to Kamakura.

August 21: Departure for Beijing in the late afternoon. Improv for the morning: shopping, souvenirs, etc.

There you go ...

Hi there,

I just discovered this forum.

Quick question: have you checked out the official Japanese tourism website? Online, you can find everything—and anything. When I first started exploring this country, I began with official sources (like JR, for example) before discovering other reliable sites.

After 15 years of experience, I’ve decided to compile a list of these info sources. They’re freely available—just ask! 😉

Wishing you a great trip already! !

Hi there! Well... if all it takes is asking, I’m asking 😉

I’ve checked out a mix of different sites, like "Japonista" (in Spanish), which is really good and comprehensive, but I’d love to take a look elsewhere if you’ve got suggestions. Thanks, and happy travels on the forum!

Hello,

Your message made me really happy!

The easiest way is for you to check out my blog. You’ll find links to: - JNTO, - JR (actually, several companies), - THE go-to site for getting around by public transport, etc.

Here it is: https://japon-fiable.blogspot.com/ For a little smile: https://japoninsolite.blogspot.com/

PS: They’re still being updated.

If you have any other questions, feel free to reply whenever—you’ll get an email notification. Since I’m on-site, just remember the time difference. ;)

Hi there. I finally got the flight tickets—it wasn’t easy, since most flights had layovers in Doha or the Emirates. So, I tweaked the itinerary a bit, and we’ll be stopping in Beijing for three days to explore the city.

In this post, I’ll only talk about our Japan program, from the evening of August 9th until the 25th.

I’ve noticed that you really need to plan and book everything in advance. It seems a bit tough to improvise, but maybe I’m overthinking it or worrying for no reason. If you think that for some activities where I mention "to book," it’s actually not necessary and there’s some wiggle room, please let me know. That’ll help me keep the schedule from being too rigid... For example, train tickets: should we book them in advance or just grab them on the spot?

Anyway, here’s the plan (2 adults and a 12-year-old kid who’s into mythology, music, and... Pokémon):

August 9: Arrival at 9:30 PM at Haneda Airport, transfer to a hotel near Senso-ji

August 10: Senso-ji, subway (get a 48-hour metro pass) -> Meiji Jingu, Harajuku, Kawaii Monster Café (to book), evening in Shibuya

August 11: Tsukiji, Imperial Palace, Avatar Down Robot Café (restaurant with robots, to book), Akihabara, Shinjuku, and Omoide Yokocho

August 12: Train to Takayama (to book). Afternoon: Takayama

August 13: Takayama -> bus to Shirakawago (I’m not booking this in advance) -> evening in Takayama (start of O-Bon: Bon Odori dances near Hida Folk Village) Red Tokyo Tower (night pass from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, video game zone)

August 14: Takayama -> Kyoto (train to book). Afternoon: Eikando -> Kencho-ji -> Gion district / evening: Kiyomizu-dera (during O-Bon, illuminated at night)

August 15: Morning: Fushimi Inari, then train (I’m not booking this in advance) to Nara. O-Bon festivities in Nara

August 16: Arashiyama. O-Bon festivities

August 17: Kinkaku-ji, Nijo Castle, Nishiki Market, Gion / Pontocho

August 18: Train to Himeji (I’m not booking this), visit the castle, bus to Fukusaki, the "Yokai town," return to Himeji

August 19: From Himeji to Tokyo by Shinkansen (to book). Arrival around noon, afternoon boat Hotaluna (book?), for Odaiba: Miraikan (book?), TeamLab Planet (book?)

August 20: Disneyland (yes, it’s for the kid... to book)

August 21: Nikko (I’m not booking the train). Evening: Skytree (to book)

August 22: Kamakura (I’m not booking the train)

August 23: Ueno Park, Red Tokyo Tower (the tower and the game zone), and improvising

August 24: Hakone or Fujikawaguchiko (I’d rather improvise on the 23rd and 24th)

August 25: Departure.

That’s it. 😉 Thanks for your feedback!

Hello,

For teamLab Planet, booking is mandatory. We showed up without a reservation, and we were told that tickets could only be purchased online and that it was sold out for several days (April 2024, for info).

A great tip in Tokyo: go all the way to the top of the Azabudai Hills tower, 34th floor, for a view of the Tokyo Tower and the city.

For Disneyland, there are two parks, so if you're going, you might as well spend two days there.

Thanks for the Azabudai Hills tip—I’ll keep that in mind!

We asked our kid, and they’d rather go to Universal Studios in Osaka, so we’re making a detour to Osaka from Himeji.
FA Fairytitania Regular ·
We did Universal too. One day is enough.

Otherwise, in Odaiba, if your kid likes it, there’s a miniatures museum: Small Worlds (nothing to do with Disney dolls 😅) with animated scenes—an airport, a space center with a rocket blasting off, Evangelions, and more.
