Accommodation in Egypt
Location Map of Egypt
Overview of the Offer
Egypt, being a traditionally tourist-oriented country, offers a wide and affordable range of accommodations, though the quality isn’t always up to par. You’ll find everything from campgrounds—or rather, encampments—to all types of hotels, including "all-inclusive" options, several youth hostels, and even a few homestay possibilities. Generally, prices in tourist areas rise during the high season, from mid-December to mid-January and sometimes in the summer. However, bargaining is possible if you stay for several nights or travel off-season.
Hotels
Egypt provides a substantial hotel range to suit all tastes and budgets.
Budget
As is often the case in many countries, local "budget" hotels are best avoided due to their basic, even sometimes squalid, conditions. For just a little more, you can easily find other establishments offering better value for money.
Mid-Range
Egypt has a selection of hotels catering to the local middle class and independent travelers. While some establishments aren’t particularly impressive, most offer "decent" services, comfort, and amenities. You can stay for 15 € to 20 € per night for two. Generally, these represent a good choice for those who don’t want to spend too much on accommodation. The only downside: there’s often limited availability in highly frequented coastal areas, which tend to focus on all-inclusive clientele.
High-End and All-Inclusive
High-end hotels are found in major cities but especially in tourist zones (sometimes remote) of beach resorts. Most remain affordable as all-inclusive packages, but prices soar if you book just one or two nights, particularly in season.
Youth Hostels
The country has around a dozen youth hostels in its main cities. However, by general consensus, these aren’t particularly appealing in many respects and aren’t really recommended—especially since you can sleep for roughly the same price in budget traveler hotels.
Camping and Encampments
There are very few campgrounds in Egypt. Often poorly equipped and remote, they’re primarily designed for motorized travelers, such as those with campervans, rather than those simply looking to pitch a tent. However, you’ll find organized encampments with small huts for rent in various coastal areas, like the Sinai or along the desert’s edge. While these huts can be somewhat basic, the setting can be pleasant, and the rates are always very affordable—under 10 € per hut. Wild camping, on the other hand, is strongly discouraged in Egypt.

Which Accommodation to Choose?
For independent travelers, mid-range hotels often offer the best value for money. Additionally, encampments by the sea or along the desert’s edge can provide beautiful settings and very attractive rates for some.
