Accommodation in Kenya
FR

Overview of the Offer

Kenya offers a range of accommodation options, from camping or modest guesthouses to luxurious safari lodges, including bandas, which are traditional huts. The choice is logically more abundant in tourist areas. In principle, there is a "local or resident" rate and a more expensive "visitor" rate.

For lodges and high-end establishments, a supplement may sometimes be applied during the high season at Christmas and Easter. Conversely, in the low season, it is easy to negotiate prices. In most cases, mid-to-high-range accommodation is paid for directly in US dollars or local currency.

Hotels of All Kinds

Hotels and Guesthouses

Hotels and guesthouses are numerous in cities and tourist areas, offering a wide range of prices and comfort levels.

Generally, it is best to avoid the "cheapest possible" category, as many establishments can be somewhat gloomy or even pose some risks. While you can sleep for the equivalent of just a few euros, it is worth spending a little more for better value for money. Typically, the 15/20 € range for a double room offers a good first choice, with a bathroom (private or shared) and at least a fan. For 30/40 €, you can expect more comfort or a "tourist-standard" room, or even charming local establishments like beachfront bungalows. If you wish, you can check the room before committing and negotiate prices in the low season.

Lodges

These are found in parks and reserves, often in pleasant settings and located in "strategic" spots (such as watering holes) to better enjoy the wildlife. They offer full comfort with quality service. Logically, their rates reflect this, so it is better to opt for an organised package where the provider has negotiated the rates if you choose this type of accommodation.

Bungalows (Bandas)

Note that in Kenyan national parks (not reserves), there is also the option to stay in bungalows, or more precisely in *bandas*, which are traditional huts. You can go with a group and cook your own meals, all in a more affordable hard-wall option than a lodge but more comfortable than a classic tent.

All-Inclusive

Kenya has long offered all-inclusive stays in various coastal areas, such as around Mombasa, Malindi, or Lamu. Unfortunately, security issues have made the entire northern part of this coastline inaccessible—or at least inadvisable—significantly reducing the popularity of hotels and beachside all-inclusive packages, which are now mostly limited to Mombasa. In short, this type of service is now primarily found through safaris.

Which Accommodation to Choose?

If you are not on a safari, the guesthouse option is the most interesting. Otherwise, a safari with nights in a tent will always be much more economical than staying in a lodge.
