Climate and Weather in Chile
Location Map of Chile
Climate Overview
Chile's climate is highly varied due to the country's length. There are three distinct climatic regions: the arid north (with minimal rainfall), the Mediterranean-like central region (with fairly hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters), and the temperate oceanic south (with abundant rainfall, a short dry season, and low temperatures). Generally, given the country's narrow width, temperatures are moderated by oceanic influences, particularly the cold Peru Current (Humboldt Current) offshore.
Another defining feature of Chile's climate is altitude. In the Andes, temperatures drop by about one degree for every 150 meters of elevation. The north is almost entirely desert, making it one of the most arid regions in the world.
