Climate and Weather in Texas

Climate Overview

Given its area larger than that of France, Texas has a varied climate with rainfall and temperatures changing according to latitude and altitude. Broadly speaking, however, the territory can be divided into two parts: the Gulf of Mexico coast (Houston) and the interior (Amarillo, El Paso).

The coastline and its hinterland enjoy a humid subtropical climate quite similar to what you find around Louisiana. While not heavy, rainfall is regular throughout the year. It’s this humidity that makes the summer heat particularly oppressive, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C for several days. Winters, on the other hand, are cool and pleasant, averaging 13/15°C. Cyclone-wise, the coast is regularly hit by hurricanes between late May and September.

Inland, conditions differ with a more continental climate that also varies with altitude. The west (El Paso) is arid, with little rainfall, foreshadowing what you find in neighboring western U.S. states. But it’s in the north (Amarillo) where the differences are most pronounced, with hot, dry summers and cold winters that can bring snow and even blizzards. January and February are the worst. Additionally, the entire region is prone to regular tornadoes between April and June, as it lies squarely in what’s known as the Tornado Alley.

Best Time to Visit Texas

Overall, the periods from late March to early June and from late September to early November offer a good balance for exploring the entire state—though you may need to adjust your itinerary slightly depending on the season.
