Entry Requirements and Visa for Mauritius

For French Citizens

For a tourist trip, no visa is required for stays of less than 3 months. A passport valid beyond the planned return date is simply necessary, as is an onward ticket, which may sometimes be requested upon arrival on the island. Occasionally (though rarely), proof of accommodation and sufficient funds equivalent to $100 USD per person per day may also be required.

That said, like many countries worldwide, Mauritius is expected to soon implement a mandatory electronic travel authorization for all visitors. The goal, as always, is to streamline entry procedures for travelers and, in turn, ease congestion at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, which can sometimes become quite busy.

For Residents of Réunion

Given the proximity and strong connections between the two islands, Mauritian authorities decided in 2022 that French citizens residing in Réunion may enter with just an ID card instead of a passport, provided they stay for at least two nights. This simplification measure may not last indefinitely, so it’s wise to check current requirements beforehand if applicable.

Other Nationalities

The same rules apply to Swiss, Canadian, Belgian, and most other EU nationals.

In Case of Violation

Overstaying beyond the permitted duration is considered an offense, resulting in a fine, deportation at the traveler’s expense, and, in cases of repeat offenses, short prison sentences. Typically, offenders are also "blacklisted," barring them from re-entering the country for several years.

Long Stays

It’s possible to extend a stay beyond 3 months and up to 6 months by applying for a (free) visa at the "Passport & Immigration Office" on Lislet Geoffroy Street in Port Louis. Tel.: +230 210 93 12.

Required documents include a copy of your passport, a return or onward ticket, hotel reservations, and proof of funds amounting to $100 USD per day.
