Flying to the US East Coast
Location Map of East Coast of the United States
Overview
Contrary to what one might think, the region's airports are not the largest in the United States, even though New York, with its three hubs (JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark), handles a combined total of nearly 120 million passengers per year, making it the country's top air gateway. That said, with New York-JFK (5th in the country with 54 million), Newark (15th with 36 million), Philadelphia International (19th with 31 million), New York-LaGuardia (20th with 27 million), Baltimore (22nd with 22.5 million), and Washington-Dulles (23rd with 21.5 million)—to name just the largest—the region is exceptionally well served for both domestic and international flights.
Unsurprisingly, all major US airlines, as well as several "secondary" ones, have at least one base in the area:
- Baltimore-Washington International: Southwest (secondary hub).
- New York-JFK: American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and JetBlue Airways.
- New York-LaGuardia: American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
- New York-Newark: United Airlines.
- Philadelphia International: American Airlines.
- Pittsburgh International: Sun Air Express (secondary hub).
- Washington Dulles: Silver Airways and United Airlines.

From France
New York is one of the best-served destinations for direct or connecting flights from France, with over twenty airlines to choose from. It’s also a destination where prices can vary dramatically—sometimes doubling or more—between low season (roughly winter) and high season (summer), ranging from 350 € to 700/800 € on average for the best current deals. Naturally, Paris, departing from Roissy and, to a lesser extent, Orly, offers the most direct options, with flights taking roughly 8 hours. Beyond New York City, three other cities in the region are also served by direct flights.
Direct flights
In addition to Delta Air Lines’ Nice-New York JFK route, the following connections are available from Paris (Roissy and/or Orly):
- New York-JFK: Air France, American Airlines, Delta, Norwegian, OpenSkies, XL Airways.
- New York-Newark: Delta, La Compagnie, OpenSkies, United.
- Philadelphia: American Airlines, Delta (seasonal).
- Pittsburgh: Delta (seasonal).
- Washington Dulles: Air France, United.

Rest of the United States
Every US state or major city has at least one direct route to a New York airport (including LaGuardia) or Washington, DC, if not other cities in the region. These routes are operated by either a "major" airline (American, Delta, United, etc.) or a "secondary" one. In short, you’ll have no trouble flying to or from the New York/Washington area from almost anywhere in the United States.
