Health and Safety in Lesotho

Official Recommendations

In France, both for individuals and professionals, the "travel advice" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding precautions for each country has legal weight. A similar online travel advice system exists in several countries:

Health

If arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is theoretically required to enter Lesotho. Otherwise, no vaccinations are mandatory, though it is still advisable to be up to date with your "basic vaccines."

Illnesses

Given the altitude (minimum 1,400 m) and climate, the risks of parasitic and other diseases are non-existent. However, the country has one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world.

Hygiene

As always, good personal and especially food hygiene is necessary if you are not used to "eating local." In this case, avoid dishes or foods that do not appear completely fresh, if only to prevent traveler’s diarrhea. As for tap water, it is not safe to drink.

Local Healthcare Facilities

Local healthcare facilities are quite limited, and many serious cases are treated in South Africa, particularly in the city of Bloemfontein, which is not far away (150 km from Maseru).

Safety

Crime and Delinquency

Lesotho is significantly safer than its South African neighbor. Nevertheless, Maseru, the capital, requires some precautions after dark. It is best to avoid walking, use only official or recommended taxis, and if driving, keep windows and doors locked.

Socio-Political Risks

The country is not always politically stable (as seen in the not-so-distant past), but it poses little risk to visitors. As always, it is best to avoid crowds during demonstrations or political events, which can already create tensions among the local population.

Climate, Nature, and Wildlife

More than people, it is the environment that may require caution. The harsh winter climate, sudden and violent storms, and sparsely populated areas call for standard precautions, especially if venturing off the beaten path. As for altitude, while far from Andean or Himalayan peaks, it is wise to be cautious if you are particularly vulnerable.

Foreign Consulates in Lesotho

If you encounter problems while traveling abroad, your country’s consular services can assist you. It is also worth noting that if you are a citizen of the European Union and your country is not represented, you may seek help from any other EU member state’s representation.

France

There is no French consular representation in Lesotho; all matters concerning the country are handled from the South Africa. However, in case of urgent necessity, French citizens may contact the consulates of other EU member states present in the country, such as the United Kingdom or Germany.
