Introduction to Northern Cyprus
FR

Overview

Northern Cyprus, or the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" (TRNC), is the northern part of the island of Cyprus, bordering the Republic of Cyprus. Since the 1974 coup on the island, it has been occupied by Turkey, which declared it an "independent country" in 1983. However, it is not recognised by any other nation or international body, which consider it merely the northern zone of the Republic of Cyprus. In short, while not quite on the same footing as other Turkish provinces, the TRNC is, in practice, currently little more than an "external part" of Turkish territory, whose existence depends entirely on Turkey.

Tourism

Although Northern Cyprus has almost as many tourist attractions as its southern neighbour—especially when it comes to beaches—tourism here is far less developed. The territory’s political situation, with its lack of international recognition, along with limited air connections (even if improving) primarily to Turkey and a few other countries, all act as constraints on the sector’s growth. That said, it is now very easy for visitors to stay in the North when arriving from the Republic of Cyprus, which was not always the case.

In the end, Northern Cyprus attracts four times fewer foreign visitors, with roughly one million tourists each year. Around two-thirds of these are Turkish, and nearly 10% more come from the United Kingdom, where a large Turkish Cypriot community lives. As for popular destinations, the Kyrenia region dominates the island’s tourism activity and services. The city is considered the country’s tourist capital, complete with lively nightlife. Outside this resort and its surroundings, there are few crowds, and tranquillity is guaranteed...
