Introduction to Sumatra
FR

Overview

Sumatra is the westernmost island in the Indonesian archipelago, near Malaysia. Covering over 473,000 km², it is also one of the largest islands in the world. Its entire western region is made up of a chain of volcanic mountains (under 3,805 m) hiding numerous high-altitude lakes. Dense forests on its foothills are home to a rich and varied wildlife (monkeys, tigers, elephants, rhinoceroses...). Close to the west coast lies the Mentawai archipelago, with Nias and Siberut as its best-known islands. The eastern part, however, is flat and marshy, with many plantations—particularly rubber and coffee—as well as oil fields. Overall, Sumatra has a fairly wet climate year-round, especially in its northern region.

Tourism

Sumatra is not necessarily the most tourist-friendly destination. Aside from a few small archipelagos off its eastern coast near Singapore (including Bangka-Belitung), which are popular for their beaches and resorts, the rest of Sumatra remains somewhat off the beaten path, especially for Western tourists. Nevertheless, the island is home to several national parks (Kerinci Seblat, Gunung Leuser...) and, above all, populations that have preserved their cultures and traditions. Ultimately, it is this cultural richness and diversity of the Karo-Batak, Minangkabau, or the inhabitants of the Mentawai Islands or Nias that make a visit to Sumatra so rewarding.
