This land, one of the world's largest islands, isn't necessarily the most tourist-friendly. Aside from a few small archipelagos off its eastern coast near Singapore (including Bangka-Belitung), which are popular for their beaches and resorts, the rest of Sumatra remains somewhat off the beaten track for Western tourists. Nevertheless, the island is home to several natural parks (Kerinci Seblat, Gunung Leuser...) and, above all, populations that have preserved their cultures and traditions. It’s ultimately this cultural richness and diversity of the Karo-Batak, Minangkabau, or the inhabitants of the Mentawai Islands or Nias that make a visit to Sumatra so rewarding.
