Climate Overview

Kenya has a fairly varied climate depending on whether you're on the Indian Ocean coast, in the north, or in the central highlands region. Apart from the northern part, where rainfall is low, the country experiences two distinct rainy seasons. The first, and heaviest, runs from late March to late May. There is then lighter rain in November and early December.

Generally, the coastal climate is tropical, with sunshine and average annual temperatures around 30°C (peaking at the start of the year). Although the air is hot and humid, constant winds somewhat reduce the feeling of stuffiness. However, while the trade winds from October to March are pleasant, those that follow bring heavy rain between April and July, along with a choppy sea that isn’t always inviting.

Inland, the highlands enjoy a temperate climate, though nights can be quite cool or cold depending on the altitude. The further west you go, the more humid the climate becomes, with higher temperatures than in the central part of the country (Nairobi). Note that during the rainy season, particularly the first one, some roads may be cut off.

As for the north/northeast, which is almost desert-like, the climate is scorching and windy, with average temperatures easily exceeding 35°C.

Best Climate Period for Kenya

On the coast, whether for beach or diving, the ideal time is from late August to March. Even if the start of the year can be a bit hot despite the trade winds, you avoid the heavy rains of the following months and the sea, which isn’t always very inviting. For the highlands and reserves inland, simply avoid the rainy seasons and prioritize safaris from late December to early March or late June to October.
