If there’s one region that encapsulates the country’s geographical diversity, it’s the northern part, known as Cibao, around the cities of Puerto Plata and Santiago de los Caballeros. Here, the beaches and hotels of the Atlantic coast sit alongside the inland mountains and their outdoor sports. In short, a great spot for those looking for "active and varied holidays."

Main Cities

Northern DR is the most fertile and productive region on the island. It’s home to the country’s second- and third-largest urban areas, Santiago de los Caballeros and Puerto Plata, as well as several smaller towns like Bonao, Constanza, Jarabacoa, and Sosúa, to name just a few tourist spots.

Tourist Attractions

Cities and Their Heritage

Along with the capital, the region’s two largest urban areas are among the few places in the country with any real historical heritage and museums, offering a different way to explore the country.

Beaches and Coastline

Though less crowded than the Punta Cana region, the northern coast is a major hub for beach tourism, with 100 kilometres of shoreline and a string of resort complexes. The areas around Puerto Plata—especially Playa Dorada—as well as Sosúa and Cabarete further east are the most popular, appealing to both families and younger travellers, particularly in Cabarete with its lively vibe.

Nature and Activities

With both sea and mountains on offer, this may be the region with the widest range of options: beaches, diving, various water sports (including renowned surfing spots), several water and theme parks, and the Cordillera mountain range with its own set of activities.
