Precautions

Staying in Marrakech doesn’t require any special precautions; risks are very low as long as you don’t act carelessly. The police are there to ensure everything goes smoothly. The biggest issue for visitors tends to be scams or minor rip-offs, especially in "tourist services": from small addition errors in restaurants to overcharged taxi rides (or fares quoted in euros instead of dirhams), including anything that can be monetised around Jemaa el-Fna or the souks.

Another concern is the summer temperatures, which can exceed 40°C, making it essential to protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated. The most vulnerable should avoid travelling or exerting themselves during the hottest hours of the day.

Consulates

Among the consulates in the city:

  • Belgium: c/o Palmeraie Golf Palace, 40060 Marrakech. Tel.: 524 36 87 61.
  • France: Rue Camille Cabana, Quartier de l'Hivernage, 40000 Marrakech. Tel.: 524 38 82 00.

Laundries

Self-service laundries and dry cleaners have spread throughout the city. So, in principle, there’s no problem finding a place to wash your clothes affordably. Another option is to use your hotel, where laundry can be washed and then hung out to dry on the terrace.

French language use

There’s no language barrier in Marrakech, where you’ll always find people who speak French.
