Sumatra isn’t the most "hectic" island in the archipelago. However, the Aceh region in the far north has long been known for its violent opposition to the Dutch and later to the Indonesian governments. Although things have calmed down in recent years, it’s best to check the current situation before venturing into this part of the island. Beyond that, Sumatra remains a destination suited to beginner or slightly experienced travellers, especially if you stray off the beaten path.
