Overview of Ireland
Location Map of Ireland
Quick Overview
Ireland (the island) is made up of the Republic of Ireland (Éire in Gaelic) in the south and Northern Ireland (sometimes incorrectly also called Ulster) in the north. The former is independent (and predominantly Catholic), while the latter is part of Great Britain (with a Protestant majority).
Despite its relatively modest size, the island boasts a diverse range of landscapes, including mountain ranges, moorlands, lakes, cliffs, and rugged coastlines—one of its main tourist attractions. For centuries, Ireland supplied emigrants to countries like the United States, but in recent decades, the territory has welcomed many migrants, particularly from Eastern Europe. This shift was driven by the country’s strong economic growth in the 1990s and 2000s, though this trend has since slowed, making Ireland less attractive in this regard...
