The Coast and the Islands

Separated by Panama, Colombia’s coastline is almost evenly divided between the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. While the former sees little tourism, the latter has long attracted visitors with "gems" like the magnificent colonial city of Cartagena, the Tayrona National Park, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (and its famous Ciudad Perdida), not to mention a top all-inclusive Caribbean destination: the islands of San Andres.

The Andes

The Andean region of the country is a mountainous area where most of the population is concentrated in cities like Bogotá or Medellín. Beyond its remarkable parks (such as Los Nevados) and opportunities for outdoor sports (particularly around San Gil), the region’s appeal also lies in its many traces of the Spanish colonial era (Bachichara, Tunja, Villa de Leyva...) and even pre-Columbian times (San Agustín).

This vast territory in the south/southeast of the country is sparsely populated, not always safe, and still in the early stages of tourism, which is almost entirely focused around the city of Leticia. In short, exploring this region—especially if you want to venture off the beaten path—remains a true adventure, not for everyone, and requires time, patience, and resources.
