Health and Safety in Cyprus

Official Recommendations

In France, both for individuals and professionals, the "travel advice" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding precautions for each country has legal value. A similar online travel advice system exists in several countries:

Health

No vaccinations are mandatory to enter the country, though it is still advisable to be up to date with your "basic vaccines."

Illnesses and Hygiene

The country does not present any particular health issues, and tap water is safe to drink everywhere.

Local Healthcare Facilities

Local healthcare facilities are generally satisfactory. For medical care, nationals of countries in the European Economic Area must present their European Health Insurance Card (formerly form E-111), which guarantees the same rights to everyone—otherwise, they may have to pay their medical expenses. Other visitors will need to rely on their insurance or pay the costs themselves.

Safety

Crime and Delinquency

Cyprus (both the south and the north) is a safe destination, though like anywhere else, there is some petty crime targeting tourists, such as pickpocketing or occasional theft from vehicles. However, with basic precautions and a bit of common sense, there is little risk.

Socio-Political Risks

The territorial division since 1974 remains a sensitive issue on the island. While tensions have eased and reunification may one day occur, the topic can still provoke strong reactions among the southern population, though such incidents are very rare. Practically speaking, always respect authorized crossing points between the two zones and follow the instructions of the authorities (particularly in the north) arising from this situation.

Foreign Consulates on Site

If you encounter problems while traveling abroad, your country’s consular services can assist you. It’s also worth noting that if you are a citizen of the European Union and your country is not represented, you can contact any other EU member state’s representation.

Important to Know

Since the island is divided, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is recognized by almost no one, foreign diplomatic missions based in the south have little to no authority to intervene or assist their nationals in the north, even though they are theoretically responsible for the entire island. Additionally, no foreign countries except Turkey are officially represented in the north. Given the situation, the two "countries" also maintain no diplomatic relations.
