Health and Safety in Mayotte

Official Recommendations

In France, both for individuals and professionals, the "travel advice" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding precautions for each country has legal value. A similar online travel advice system exists in several countries:

Health

Diseases

While Mayotte does not present major health risks, it is best to take some basic precautions to avoid dengue, chikungunya, or malaria, which occur sporadically and/or locally. First and foremost, protect yourself from mosquitoes—and other insects—by bringing repellent and a mosquito net, especially during the rainy season. For malaria, some recommend treatment for longer stays, though very few locals follow this advice.

Hygiene

There are few risks, and the water is potable everywhere. However, remember to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun during the hottest periods.

Healthcare Facilities on Site

Mayotte has a good healthcare system with five hospitals and several clinics. In case of serious issues, evacuations to Réunion can also be arranged. As for how it works—reimbursement for care, etc.—everything functions as it does in mainland France.

Safety

Crime and Delinquency

While Mayotte long had relatively few issues with crime and delinquency, the situation has unfortunately deteriorated in recent years. The island now experiences widespread delinquency. Burglaries in homes (hence the need for guards when away), thefts from cars, and occasional robberies on secluded beaches are now very common.

Socio-Political Risks and Terrorism

After a long period of protests—sometimes violent—in 2011 against the high cost of living, the island is now also facing increasing socio-economic tensions, particularly between Mahorais and undocumented Comorian immigrants. Overall, there is a clear deterioration in this area on the island.

Climate and Nature

Aside from the heat, which it’s best to protect yourself from, there are no real climatic constraints. Even the cyclones that sweep through the Indian Ocean during the austral summer very rarely hit Mayotte.

Animals

There’s no real danger of encountering harmful wildlife. At most, divers should just watch out for coral and a few fish that can cause cuts or stings.

Foreign Consulates on Site

There are no foreign consulates in Mayotte, including from the Comoros, which still do not recognize Mayotte’s affiliation with France.
