Health and Safety in Hungary

Official Recommendations

In France, both for individuals and professionals, the "travel advice" from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding precautions for each country has legal value. A similar online travel advice system exists in several countries:

Health

No vaccinations are mandatory to enter the country, though it is still advisable to be up to date with your "basic vaccinations."

Illnesses and Hygiene

Nothing particular to report.

Local Healthcare Facilities

Local infrastructure is good. Hungary has even built a reputation in medical and dental tourism. Every year, thousands of Europeans come to receive treatment in specialized clinics, to the point that some cities rely almost entirely on this activity. For example, Mosonmagyaróvár is the capital of "dental tourism" in Hungary, with... 350 practitioners for just over 30,000 inhabitants!

For healthcare, nationals of European Economic Area countries must present their European Health Insurance Card (formerly E-111 form), which guarantees the same rights to everyone—otherwise, they will have to pay their medical expenses. Other visitors must rely on their insurance or pay the full cost of care.

Safety

Crime and Delinquency

Hungary is a safe destination but, like anywhere else, has minor crime targeting tourists, particularly pickpocketing in public transport. The capital is most affected. However, with basic precautions and common sense, there is no risk.

Scams and "Tourist" Harassment

There is little to fear here, except for some taxis in the capital overcharging foreign tourists. Avoid street currency exchange, as it offers no advantage and may lead to scams. Also, beware of occasional fake police officers asking to see tourists' cash...

Socio-Political Risks

Nothing particular to report.
