Beaches and Seaside Resorts

It's along the Pacific coast that you'll find the country's most beautiful beaches and main seaside resorts, such as Playa Montelimar, popular with all-inclusive enthusiasts, San Juan del Sur, loved by surf fans, or Poneloya, which is close to the city of León and is also starting to attract backpackers. Elsewhere along the coast, even if there are few or no facilities, you can still enjoy other beaches and wilder spots. However, be cautious of currents that can be dangerous, particularly around San Juan.

In addition to the Pacific coast, you can swim at Lake Nicaragua and especially at Ometepe. As for the Caribbean side, it's far less welcoming, and only the Corn Islands allow you to truly enjoy the coastline.

Water Activities

Fishing: Sport fishing at sea is well-practiced along the Pacific coast, particularly from San Juan and Montelimar. Less frequented, as it's far less visited, the eastern coast and the Corn Islands also offer some opportunities at sea or on rivers.

Diving: The best sites are primarily found on the Islas del Maíz, though there are some possibilities along the Pacific or on inland lakes.

Water sports: Especially surfing. San Juan del Sur is by far the region's best spot. Sea kayaking and lake kayaking are also growing in popularity.

Hiking

While not a major hiking destination, Nicaragua still offers a good range of options, starting with treks—of varying difficulty—to several of the country's volcanoes or on the island of Ometepe, known among other things for this. Similarly, the "mountainous" region around Matagalpa allows for nature activities, including hiking.

Cycling

Horseback Riding

Some hiking trails can also be done on horseback, through local providers. Horseback riding is also possible along the Pacific coast.

Outdoor and Adventure Sports

Golf

The sport isn't widely developed in the country, and it's only in the seaside area of Montelimar that you'll find facilities.

Climbing, Canopy, and Outdoor Activities

Following the model of what works well in Costa Rica, some local providers are gradually developing activities like zip-lining or treetop adventure courses. There's also an original activity: volcano surfing on the slopes of the Cerro Negro volcano near León.
