Things to Do in Senegal
Location Map of Senegal
Beaches and Resorts

Beaches are one of the main reasons many tourists visit Senegal. The entire region of the Petite Côte, south of Dakar, will delight lovers of beach resorts and the activities that usually come with them. The same goes for the western part of the Cape Verde Peninsula, along with other similar options around the Cap Skirring at the tip of Casamance.
Water Activities
Deep-sea fishing: The waters off Senegal are teeming with fish, including swordfish, tuna, sharks, and barracudas. Enthusiasts will have plenty of opportunities to indulge in their hobby around Cap Skirring, along the Petite Côte, and in the Cap-Vert peninsula near Dakar.
Diving: There are two main diving sites in Senegal: the Cap-Vert peninsula and, further south, La Somone on the Petite Côte.
Water sports: The Cap-Vert peninsula also offers the few water sports available along the coast.
Hiking
On Foot or by Bike
While hiking or cycling isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Senegal, there are still opportunities for both. Casamance and the Atlantic coastline offer the best combination of the two. For hikers, however, the Pays Bassari in eastern Senegal remains the most interesting spot, with its beautiful rolling green landscapes.
Practically speaking, traveling with a guide is a good option in most cases—if only to avoid getting lost or running into trouble. Also, bring at least water and sun protection. Cyclists should also watch out for road hazards.
As for timing, stick to the dry season, from November to April. The rest of the year, particularly during the "hivernage" (July to October), the heat is oppressive, and some trails become impassable due to mud or overgrown vegetation.
Safaris
Senegal isn’t Kenya or Tanzania, but there are several places to see wildlife. These include the Bandia Reserve, popular for its proximity to Dakar; the Fathala Reserve near the Gambian border; and Niokolo-Koba National Park, a UNESCO-listed site and one of West Africa’s largest parks. For 10 € to 20 € entry, you can expect to see much of Africa’s wildlife.
Outdoor and Nature Activities
Pirogue Rides
A favorite activity among many visitors, Senegal’s rivers offer lovely discoveries. You can explore the delta and the Casamance River, the Senegal River, and the Sine Saloum delta.
Hunting
The game-rich region of Kédougou is the best place for this activity.
Cultural Life and Activities
Beyond the colonial-era landmarks (Saint-Louis, Gorée, etc.), the best way to experience Senegalese culture and traditions is by exploring the small villages along the coast or inland, particularly in the Pays Bassari.
Nightlife and Going Out
As usual, the capital is where most of the action happens, with a few well-known bars and clubs. Otherwise, tourist areas along the coast also offer some nightlife during the season.
