Converting a heavy-duty bus/coach/truck into a motorhome

🙂Hi everyone, I'm looking for addresses of Saviem/Renault salvage yards, besides BIERON in Valence, to find windows and air bottles🤪.
SE Sertras140es ·
My vehicle is registered as VASP. It passes inspection until June 2006. However, when it comes to heating, hot water, the stove, and emergency exits, it doesn't meet standards at all. Can they refuse it whenever they want? Or do they let it pass because the conversion was done before the current standards?

Thanks in advance.
FR François57 Regular ·
Personally, I have a buddy who works in glassmaking and can make window panes, but shipping costs add up, so you'd save money by just getting a flat Securit glass sheet made locally—it's cheap. Find an industrial glassworks and go straight to the factory to see a technician. Give them the measurements of your window pane and its thickness, and ask what they'd charge cash-in-hand—usually they can do it because in their spare time it costs the company nothing.

Otherwise, you can find used truck parts at truck scrapyards. Just contact pagesjaunes.fr and you'll find suppliers near you.

sertraS140ES When it comes to the regulations, you're in VASP but there's a catch—either NSPC, storage, van, workshop... The main thing is meeting the approved cabin standards (I mentioned the link above, but it's at www.lorraine.drire.gouv.fr in the vehicles section). Especially if you're not running a commercial operation, you just need 1 protective partition between the cabin and cargo area (left and right side), with an opening you can make to access the cargo or an emergency exit.

The issue is if you have gas equipment—check NF S 56-200 on page 24 and pass the Veritas inspection. Otherwise, remove your gas equipment before an inspection. However, DRIRE inspections only cover mechanics—no one comes inside the bus like they do with the safety inspection. The problem you could run into is in case of a crash or explosion causing damage around the vehicle. You could be told it wasn't compliant. Example: you have insurance, but if you hit a vehicle and end up blowing up 10 others when you don't have Veritas certification, your insurance could be void. But honestly, that's all theory.

PS. I'm looking to source solar panels cheap... thanks.

I'm setting up a travel project with teenagers heading to Eastern Europe for summer 2007. We'd like to go in a fitted-out and certified bus since this trip will be treated as an itinerant holiday center. The tricky part is that we want to keep the public-transport characteristics so we can take about fifteen young people. Do you have any ideas, plans, or initial solutions for this crazy idea that we absolutely want to make happen? Otherwise, where are you at with your camper?
FR François57 Regular ·
You need to do the conversion like heavy-duty motorhomes, with all the same constraints, and follow NF S 56200 (I keep ending up copy-pasting this...😛), then register it with the transport authority for 9+ passenger seats. The only catch is you'll need technical inspections every 6 months at €106 instead of once yearly at €84 for a standard commercial vehicle.

I'm guessing you don't want to add a kitchen, just sleeping areas—that's definitely the simplest option. For bathrooms, unless you're planning to use equipped rest areas (which seems smartest for that kind of setup), you'll need to install 3 or 4 showers minimum, which means a 6–7 m² bathroom and would seriously eat into your bus space.

You can check out examples of converted buses at www.teamnegoce.com, or look at touring orchestra vehicles—someone's selling one on this forum. The issue with these vehicles is the setup might not suit your needs, and they've been owned by non-professionals (with all the best intentions, nonprofits don't always maintain the mechanics as well as a proper transport company, but that's just my take).

For 15 people, I'd personally go for a double-decker, especially with young folks, so you can have sleeping areas upstairs and seats downstairs. Pick one with a lounge area so people can eat or hang out if bad weather hits. (Or flip some seats to face each other and improvise, or buy suitable tables) Four or five rows should be plenty—a VanHool's lower deck seats about twenty. A 1990 VanHool Astromega goes for around €15,000.

Or here's another option: get a 20-seat Master bus and load tents in the cargo hold. Young people love sleeping outdoors... 3-person Igloo tents go up in minutes. Worst case, you improvise a roof rack. For €4,000–5,000 you can find that kind of bus.

Otherwise, congrats to Patou on the converted Heuliez, with special mention for that grey rear paint job à la new-generation SETRA—makes for one heck of a motorhome!

And you haven't even seen what we're preparing for the interior......

I've gotta be careful—with all these compliments, my head's gonna get so big I won't be able to drive my bus anymore......

Hi Patrick, 😉

Unlike you, I don't want to buy a coach or a heavy vehicle for the wealthy, but rather a truck that I want to convert into a campervan, like my brother did. I already have everything figured out 😛 regarding the interior layout and electrical setup. I'd like to know if there's any legislation concerning this type of modification to a utility vehicle to stay legal for any random police or gendarmerie checks. Also, when it comes to heating and interior comfort, such as showers and chemical toilets, what brands would you recommend for the best value for money?

Best regards, Thanks
Merci Bonhomme ! ! !

Hello everyone... could someone help me figure out whether registering a bus as a classic vehicle automatically reclassifies it as a heavy vehicle? Thanks in advance...

Hi Patrick.

Congrats on your bus. Looks impressive from the outside—real pro work. I can't wait to see the inside. Still haven't sold my regular campervan, but I found a Volvo B10 M with 450,000 km on the chassis and 30,000 km on the engine. I test-drove it last Friday and I thought it was solid. 90-cm-high storage compartments, air conditioning, double glazing, Webasto, AC, toilet, backup camera, fresh paint from 2 years ago. All of that for €15,000.

Now I just need to find somewhere to park it. Not easy with a beast like that in Marseille... If anyone has any ideas...

Also, I'm looking for compartmentalized stainless-steel tanks for heavy trucks. I called Bieron in Montélimar but they don't have any. If anyone knows where to find them, I'm interested.

I hope to start the conversion soon and follow in the footsteps of those who've undertaken it, started, and succeeded, then got their work certified.

Hi everyone. So, my bus is coming along nicely—I've finished the metalwork on the sides, installed the windows, and done quite a bit of the insulation. Now I'm trying to figure out what material to use for the various partitions of my interior layout and the covering over the insulation. I was thinking about OSB—that engineered wood that isn't too expensive, easy to work with, and comes in various thicknesses. Thanks for your input!😉
Ca y est, c'est reparti !!!
PA Patrick26 Veteran ·
For our bus, we're going to use the same panels we use for our displays. They're melamine panels, fire-rated and marine-grade, in 5 and 8 mm thickness. The advantage is that there are matching laminate sheets in different patterns, and for the ceiling and its curves, you just need to choose a thick scratch-resistant laminate. For us, the materials are already in stock—the color is "Pommier d'Eden". As for the price per square meter, I don't have it off the top of my head, because we order them in pallets of 25 sheets, roughly 183x275cm each.

In my opinion, the OSB solution is more complicated because you'll have to apply the finish on top!

😊I hear you, dear Patrick. And I envy you having access to such high-quality professional products. That said, I personally face a weight constraint and a tight budget, but what helps me is that my brother works at "réseauPro", so I get deep discounts on specific building products like OSB. The point of my question was really more at the regulatory level. Is OSB approved by our dear mining engineers ??? By the way, I wanted to thank you for the window blocking choice: 40x40 square and 6/10° pre-lacquered white sheet metal. This choice turned out to be easy to install and reasonably priced. Thanks again. Ludo.🙂

Hi, I'm looking for your advice because I don't know anything at all about coaches, buses... I'm just starting out. The thing is, I live in Nantes and I'd like to pick up a bus that's currently in Melle (near Niort). It doesn't have papers, and I don't think it's in a condition to drive. So I'll need to get it towed, but I'm guessing that costs a lot! Do you have any idea what this would cost, where I can turn to, and if you can think of any other solutions? This project means a lot to me but it seems hardly feasible given the situation. Thanks in advance Fanny
CA Cateludo ·
Hey, I have an interesting solution for you: Get in touch with a construction company that has a flatbed truck to load your bus onto and negotiate the cost. Nantes-Melles, you're looking at about 250km, so that's 500km round trip at 40 liters per 100km, plus driving time and loading/unloading—you've got a basis for what to negotiate, I think.
Ca y est, c'est reparti !!!
GX GX47 Regular ·
Hi, You need to add the driver's time. He drives for free. 😐 500 km takes about 8 hours of driving, maybe more with a truck-based car carrier, plus breaks (1.5h per 4h). You also need a mega car carrier (11m) with a flat bed and rear loading (a semi is 13.50m, or 14.50m if the tractor is short). For the car carrier, you need to subtract the raised hitch section from that length to fit over the tractor's rear axle. And there's no winch in case the motorhome won't move. The hourly cost is 100 euros minimum. And normally these companies aren't authorized to do freight. 🤪 For reference, the cheapest I found to deliver an empty semi over 100km: 300 euros. Renting a truck (big rig) for a day is 115 euros plus 0.15 euros per km, but you can hardly find car carriers for rent.😕 You also need to budget for highway tolls on top of fuel (mandatory for freight transport) There you go, I don't want to sound like a downer, but you've got to be realistic (unless the boss of the transport company is a close buddy or close family)😏 I know what I'm talking about - I'm currently in the business of renting or hauling equipment by semi (standard) over about 300 km🏴‍☠️

Hi everyone! 🙂 I just bought a VOLVO Janekkeer bus with some mates, it's 22 years old and has 600,000 km. Is it a good bus for converting? Does it have any good features for fitting it out? How many km can engines in this type of bus run?
NY Nytos ·
This minibus – does it need to go through inspection because you've converted the interior, or to get it registered as a light vehicle so you can drive it with a regular license? You must have had to make some engine modifications. I've heard it can be pretty tricky.

Hi all! I just picked up a 21-year-old Volvo Janekkeer 1000 bus with 600,000 km – good deal? Are there any issues with converting it and getting it through inspection?

Hi panpanpan.....

Heads up – in Belgium the regulations are very different from France for conversions. You'll probably need to get manufacturer authorization to convert it into a motorhome. If you get that authorization, things'll go much faster. We did ours... as big as yours... 35 spots...

Good luck

yeah, that's a great tip... ask benhurd, he's my expert on S53 stuff, I've got the bus but not the license... I'm starting the conversion, and we'll see when I have time for the license... anyway: not officially registered = Category D license so I don't have it (and no need to get it).

Question: What's the MINIMAL conversion needed to get it certified for Category C license (VASP NSPC, etc...) and physically what needs to be done inside? Thanks for letting me know your DRIRE contacts who can confirm with mine who don't know much about the subject
GX GX47 Regular ·
Hello, I think we've already answered this, right?

Start by requesting a motorhome conversion file from your DRIRE—everything is in there. Then contact AFNOR (address via Google as usual) and order the motorhome conversion guide for €85.

Well anyway, here's what's in the DRIRE file: fixed kitchen space, fixed dining space, fixed sleeping space; the sleeping space can be created by modifying the dining space. That's it, no bathroom required—as we all know, in France we don't wash!😏 The seats must be the original ones with original fixings. Seat belts are not mandatory for motorhomes built before 2000.

Yeah, I know all that, but I want the simplest approach... I'm taking out all the seats and keeping 9. That's done. In 2 months I need to park my bus on a public street, so I have to move it every week... I don't have time to do a full motorhome conversion, but just a simple VASP NSPC—as straightforward as possible (I know it costs me an inspection and some hassle but 100 euros isn't much, knowing that afterwards I can take it everywhere—I'm doing a major job move across work sites and want to work in it as I please... anyway! Does anyone have clear instructions? I've been told "a partition" then "no partition" then "extended cabin" (there I saw some specific details... but I'd need to move it so the guy can "see what I've done", but I don't want to make 50 trips... I just want to know upfront what the SIMPLEST conversion would be. If keeping 8 seats + driver is sufficient, I'd like to get that in writing and contact DRIRE engineers to give my details to whoever I report to.
GA Gasmobil Regular ·
My local authority allows me to create bench seating with storage (like factory motorhomes), provided the vehicle is pre-2000.
Eh ben, Ya du boulot!! http://www.aavl.fr http://gasmobil.skyrock.fr
GX GX47 Regular ·
I've already answered that. The simplest remains the VASP caravan. Sorry. Otherwise it's VASP 2 or even 3 seats but not 9 — if you're over 2 rows back it's "extended cabin," with mandatory seat belts (new) if it goes through DRIRE after December 1999 and needs constructor authorization. Ask DRIRE, they won't bite you, they like this stuff. I wanted to do the same, but the DRIRE engineer advised me against it because of the seat belts and the constructor agreed. Now converting a VASP 2-seater to 9 seats, even as a motorhome, that's a hassle...

For benches over storage, it's allowed in extended cabins not in caravans (manufacturer-approved seats) AND for vehicles under 3.5T. That's exactly where I am with my Master that I'm converting to 6 seats (extended cabin). The pre-2000 thing isn't about seat fixings, it's about seat belts in motorhomes. If the DRIRE inspector says stuff and validates it, so much the better. If it passes inspection and at the office signature we can't find the text... no signature! I waited 15 days for verification of the text about the non-obligation of rear seat belts for motorhomes whose first registration is before 2000 (there was doubt about what was registered first — the coach or the motorhome??? if it's the coach it's fine, if it's the motorhome — that's the day of reception plus signature plus registration document, it's done and since the text doesn't specify... benefit of the doubt and it's OK)

Hi, yes for the permit (normally) but your safest bet is still to ask the nearest prefecture or sub-prefecture, right?

For the CT ??? same thing --> prefecture

Ha, I almost forgot: reinforced cab = partition required (wood, metal, mesh) there's no mandatory material requirement, it just needs to support the load (4 to 6 tonnes?) even concrete is allowed😏😏😏

Hey, sorry but I'm just posting my thing here – there's more activity and it's super friendly too (and a little something extra) 🙂

Hi everyone

This site is awesome, it really motivated me to get my butt in gear. I also want to convert my camper van, except I don't have one yet – I'm at the first stage * Looking for a truck I'm on a lead but I'm not too sure and I'm calling on your expertise for... So it's a Unic or Iveco – the sellers weren't really sure either... 😕 type: 40-8hb (pretty big, pretty boxy) registration: eh, who cares km: 139671 horsepower: 10 fuel level: 1/2 (that's what it says) and that could tip the scales 🙂 asking price: (5335) WHAT?! (okay okay 5000) for this pile of mud? (come on 4800) ok 4500 (4600) that works selling price: 4500-5000 😛

Anyway, it's all equipped (fridge, gas, toilet, "furniture", beds). Oh geez!!!!! it's hideous. furniture, you know, like at your grandparents' place, tiles above the switch, floral wallpaper.... but that's fine because then I'll be forced to redo it I'm waiting for your answers (impatiently) before it's gone. Good luck everyone, safe travels and bon appétit of course P.S. tomorrow I'll try to post the photos
GX GX47 Regular ·
Well, the question's already been raised but honestly there's no real answer because nobody knows... Try the DRIRE—the problem with the accordion might be that the speed's apparently limited to 50km/h? And I don't think the vehicle's designed to handle more than that, so it's risky if you remove the limiter, and I'm pretty sure the DRIRE would be skeptical about your good faith in keeping it limited (because 50km/h to cross France??? Only military convoys do that...) Plus the traveling vendors and circus folks, but they rarely cover more than 100km between stops. On top of that, with a heavy vehicle you're often forced to use highways or ring roads to bypass restricted routes or cities that ban anything over 7.5T or vehicles longer than 10m in transit. And there it's FORBIDDEN on highways—minimum speed 60km/h if I remember my driving code right—and it's dangerous on ring roads and secondary roads. The regular drivers get frustrated behind you and absolutely want to pass without realizing how long your rig is.🏴‍☠️

Hey buddy,

So Unic and Ivéco are basically the same thing — it's like Simca and Talbot: it's all about the year. You might see both brands depending on the year, but anyway it's all listed on your registration document.

For the purchase: Watch out — the advisors aren't the ones footing the bill!

It could be a great deal depending on the price, or the opposite if there are surprises, or if the conversion doesn't suit you and you need to have everything redone. (For example, having to tear it all apart to insulate it 🤪)

Check the registration document type (VASP motorhome) to see if it meets standards (no dodgy modifications made after it was certified) → otherwise you'll need to get it certified. Thoroughly inspect the maintenance log, which should be present and filled with all the repairs done and regular maintenance.

Know that heavy-duty vehicle work is really expensive. I've got a tiny bit of play in my right front axle (imperceptible but very slightly visible on a lift, impossible to fix yourself — you need a puller and a press so you have to take it to a garage or heavy-duty mechanic → current quotes are around 1500 euros). Check the expiration dates on the air bottles (it's marked on them; if not, the replacement date is in the maintenance log). Also check for corrosion underneath, especially on the chassis or frame.

Well, that's it — maybe you're not much further ahead now... 😐

Hey, my bad, SORRY, I thought it was a heavy truck. Good call posting those photos—so it's under 3.5T, though this model also came in 5.5T but with the same engine 🙁😠 a piece of crap 🏴‍☠️

heads up about the engine on this vehicle, whether it's 3.5T or 5.5T—it's like those early Masters equipped with that Italian Sofim 2.5L engine. It's crap, guzzles fuel, barely moves unless you really push it hard, then you're at 12L/100km and head gasket failure every 60,000 km. I knew one guy who somehow managed 300,000 km without even opening the engine, but never went over 80 km/h and drove real easy. My buddy who had one for work though, was getting 12-13L and blew 5 engines in 2 years! 😕

so check the mileage, check the maintenance, and try to see how it was driven. also check the bodywork—it tends to rust. there you go, just my two cents

GX GX47 Regular ·
I'm not infallible, maybe this model's got a good engine? Looking more closely, it looks like the very first model, a UNIC or early Iveco. If the seller is a professional, he's responsible for the condition of the vehicle and should give you a 3-month warranty, I think? Go see it anyway, it doesn't cost anything and it gives you a point of reference. Nothing forces you to buy it; generally it's better to give yourself time to think it over. Better to miss a good deal than to get ripped off...!!! It's still an old jalopy, so don't buy blindly. But once again, it's ONLY MY opinion.
