Dawn with rosy fingers

Stunning sunrises (forgive my poor liturgical vocabulary). Note that the officiants face westward (west-northwest to be precise), whether for Matins or Vespers, which isn’t obvious in the photo. (Paris, December 7, 2024. AFP photo)

Dazzling dawns

A gilded Aurora (forgive the whimsical detour—it wasn’t me who started it 😜). Notice this palette of pinks, these saffron hues, that low light gilding the surface.

This Aurora with shifting reflections, deceptive glows... daughter of dawn or dusk?

(UnaMilanaise, sorry)

Hi there,

No worries! Between Voyajou hugging grumpy prelates and you with a pâté en croûte (which I didn’t even know existed), I’m just laughing more than anything.

My only gripe in this conversation is that rouquine posted her Portuguese bridge here. I think that photo is stunning and would’ve most likely voted for it. Oh well, personal preferences...

I’m really sorry to have "displeased" you with my post choice, Catherine Still, I’m flattered that you like the photo 😉 Indeed, those "just before sunrise" shots were a bit too colorful for my taste and didn’t quite capture the "embracing dawn" vibe, which for me should bring a sense of softness. But that’s just my take on the theme... 🙂

Did you hike up at night? Elim is nice at sunset !

We slept at Sesriem, at the campsite, so we could get in first. We climbed to the top of Dune 45 for sunrise (we were alone). I later tackled Big Daddy in the morning, but it was a nightmare—it was so hot 😕 We’d climbed Elim the evening before—it was really pretty. But it’s still just a small dune 🙂 Mountain lover for life …

I also slept at the park campsite the second time around. But I wasn’t among the first to leave... Still at night, though.

Climbing in the sand is ten times more exhausting than on a trail. Same with ash! I’m not exactly athletic to begin with, so it’s too much for me.

Hi Bruno,

Looking at the photo in question, I wondered if those were really the colors or if you’d cranked up the saturation. Either way, the photo is gorgeous. For several reasons I don’t have time to write about in this rushed, painful Milanese dawn.

There’s a dune in the Atacama Desert where walking is absolutely forbidden (and they *seriously* enforce it—no jokers, those Chileans!). That untouched sand is just stunning!

Hi Kate,

I’m not a morning person! And I haven’t found a travel photo that’s both presentable and unpublished.

I’m a morning person and have plenty of amazing sunrises in mind, but I’m not a photographer. More than 25 years passed between selling my Nikon DSLR and its lenses—which had been a heavy companion during my studies—and buying a mirrorless camera (I was set on a DSLR, but when I lifted it, I made such a face that the salesperson immediately suggested this lighter alternative). It’s technically pretty good but still almost too heavy. Years of basic smartphone or compact camera photos, with poor image quality and color rendering. Most of them got deleted. That’s why I used to say I wasn’t really qualified to organize this contest.

Yeah, super touristy! That’s why I got up early. By 9 AM, families with folding chairs and coolers start arriving, all so calm—very Spanish, you know?

The Merzouga of the Canary Islands!

You’re exaggerating! I’ve taken several trips to the Erg Chebbi desert—there’s no comparison.

Hi Catherine,

I’m a morning person, I remember countless fabulous dawns, but I’m not a photographer.

Oh, I don’t think anyone here claims to be a photographer.

What made me say before that I wasn’t really qualified to organize this contest

Whether it’s organizing a contest or critiquing a photo, the task is within (almost) anyone’s reach. It seems to me you love art, right? Do you need to be a chef to critique food? An artist to judge creativity? In any case, thanks for stepping up after the last one fell through 😉

You’re exaggerating!

Let’s just say I knew Merzouga before the tarmac was laid. It wasn’t quite the desert anymore, but it wasn’t yet the buggy and 4x4 circus either.

It’s really touristy and commercial now.

Still, I don’t doubt for a second that Maspalomas is way worse.

Hi,

Ah, in my opinion, no one here claims to be a photographer.

I wasn’t talking about a status, but rather an attitude, a mindset, the role photography plays in a trip. It’s only recently that I’ve started looking at things with the idea of turning reality into a photo.

Hi former neighbor *

I loved discovering the traces of wildlife in the Omani desert 😉

Even when zooming in on the photo, I can’t identify the animal that left this trail. What could it have been? A massive solitary ungulate?

I reread a few lines this morning: "Where are you running, Dawn? Stay, such a thin and breathtaking glow! Dawn, beware of daybreak! This is the hour I love most. The hour when the world prepares to be at its purest. When the air is freshest. When the bird draws from its enormous throat and tiny head the most liquid and miraculous song. When the tree leaf falls, in the first pale light, covered in the dew that the air mysteriously weeps, awaiting the beaks of birds and the fleeting lips of cats who drink the dawn from their petals or gather it from their fur." (P. Quignard, *A Day of Happiness*)

Hello,

No, because it’s not dawn... the sun’s already up 😄

Yes, that’s the confusion that comes up in this discussion—dawn vs. sunrise. Dawn happens BEFORE sunrise, and it’s not even the aurora, that rosy glow that precedes the sun’s appearance. But why not... That’s why it’s tricky to get a good photo in the half-darkness. A tripod is definitely helpful.

"Travel is a dawn that never ends. Like Jim Harrison, I find dawn beautiful—the dawns of the world, in Saint Petersburg, Kenya, Mexico, everywhere. Whether it’s an elephant drinking, factories smoking, the Andes dusted with snow, or Paris in the mist behind Belleville. Dawn is beautiful because it beautifies. It’s the promise of dazzlement, the birth of incomprehensible life. You look at dawn, my love—no, you live it, you’re in it, you lose yourself to be reborn. The joy of travel is doing everything as if for the first time."

True, dawn is well before sunrise, but Catherine left a much wider window since the photo can be taken in the early morning 😄 For my part, I’m sticking to before sunrise… already hard enough to choose as it is 😅

In the end, it doesn’t really matter—the main thing is to participate, and voters will decide what fits the theme or not 👍

Good evening,

Having a tripod is preferable.

Yes, I was actually thinking that at least shot #3 by rouquine was taken with one—how else to explain the water’s effect other than a slightly longer exposure time?

I’d briefly considered naming this contest session "potron-minet" for linguistic nostalgia, but between a cat’s rear end, no matter how graceful, and a line from Rimbaud, the latter won out. And the subject remains the same at its core.

Yes, the tripod is really useful when the light is low 😊. And with the water and moving clouds, I love the dreamy effect of long exposure (photo 3 was a 15-minute exposure)

Good evening,

Your photo is stunning, with the glow on the big pebbles in the foreground and the soft, foamy look of the sea spray just behind!

Bruno, a tripod isn’t *sharp*—it’s just bulky and heavy 😛 It’s such a pain to decide whether to pack one (otherwise, say goodbye to Samarkand by night). A real dilemma when one of the best things about traveling is finally being light and mobile...

Traveling light has so many perks that I’ve given up on tripods. There are small formats out there, though, like the one in the attached image. A friend lent me one, I tested it, it’s handy, but in the end, I didn’t use it enough to bother carrying it again.

Hi Catherine,

I’ve also tried this kind of tool, even a slightly smaller one, tucked into the side pocket of my camera bag—super handy as long as you’ve got some kind of mid-height support (table, low wall, rock, etc.) to set it on. But if you’re stuck with just the ground, you’re definitely on all fours... Well... Um... It’s really just a choice: go for the real photos and accept the trade-offs, or settle for the vibes and put them into words. 🙂

Setting aside the "photos" topic for a sec, let’s talk about dawn—this morning’s was so stunning that WhatsApp statuses were completely flooded. Dozens (hundreds? thousands?) of Milanese smartphones were capturing and sharing the blazing glow of the newborn day, suddenly gripping the soul.

This shot’s already a little late. We’d all been walking through the crimson light.
