if you waste your energy climbing to the top of this "famous" hill. It’s the most cliché/tacky sunset spot. Same goes for the sunrise at the Grand Temple. Unless you see it as a sociological experience 😛

I’m okay with the sunset (we’d just arrived on-site from France, so it was already a great introduction), but the sunrise was one of my most magical travel experiences.

And this photo is my all-time favorite (because discovering Angkor had been a long-time dream, because that sunrise was magical, and because my kids were little back then 😛)

Alright, back to the topic! ;)

The stairs at the start of the climb up the Dune of Pilat. The only thing in common with the off-topic photo before is that my kids are in this one too :P

Photo 1: Doï Tapang, Chumphon, Thailand. Getting some height to admire one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the region.

This photo reminds me of the final scene in *The Truman Show*, when Jim Carrey climbs up the set and exits ;). Doesn’t it for you?

Photo No. 4 Stepwell of Chand Baori, during a trip to Rajasthan. Here, the staircase becomes almost a geometric work of art. Hundreds of perfectly symmetrical steps plunge toward the water, creating the impression of a mineral labyrinth.

This place fascinated me with its blend of beauty and ingenuity. Back in the day, these stepwells were used to store water while providing a cool space for people to gather. Discovering it, I felt like I was looking at architecture designed as much for survival as for awe.

Ah, I looked through my photos of baori (or vav in Gujarat) but didn’t find all of them—and none that were really satisfying. Definitely some great material for this theme.

I’d had the same idea but figured it’d be too much India for my part on the theme. Christelle seems to prove you can never have enough India 🤷‍♀️

Hi there,

This is the staircase that most members of this forum love climbing on the first day of their trip—and love descending a little less on the last day.

Photo taken in Blagnac this morning, at my request, by a friend leaving for Split... Thanks, Michele!

Mind the step...! 😉

The issue is that India as a whole and its diversity are terribly photogenic.

So Pagal (and hi Bruno and everyone else 😄)

but the staircases almost go unnoticed there. This was in Jodhpur last March. They were filming a movie, hence the beauty of the set!

" I still prefer it with the walkway though 😁" Oh, not me at all, Bruno 😭.

It reminds me of when I was 19 and my first trip outside Europe. We landed in Fort-de-France in the middle of a February night, and when I walked down the plane stairs, I thought for a few seconds that the incredible heat was coming from the engines 🤯. Yeah, it was probably really dumb 😂. But it was so amazing when I realized it was just the local climate. I think that exact moment is what got me instantly hooked on tropical destinations! So yeah, I can’t stand those air-conditioned walkways—having to wait even longer to breathe the local air really annoys me 😂

They’re rare in the airfields I frequent. ... 🙂 And at my age, it’s a bit of exercise ... 😎 .

MO Montagnard74 Globetrotter ·
Honestly, what gets me the most is crossing the airport in a packed bus.

And you forgot the day you arrive in a downpour—just walking to the bus leaves you soaked to the bone 😉.

But I’ll admit, crossing the tarmac under a gloomy sky in some tiny airport at the other end of the world can be kinda cool …

Anyway, we’re getting off topic … Hey, this could be a theme for next month’s contest: “airplanes around the world.” Nah, that’s lame—everyone’s got the same photo 😏

The Centre Pompidou, a gem of the French capital (for me, a work of art!), isn’t just famous for its extraordinary architecture—it’s also known for its monumental escalator. Encased in a transparent tube, it runs along the entire west façade of the building, offering a unique experience: a breathtaking panoramic view of Paris... I love it, it’s incredible!

(I’ll admit, in the photo, the stairs only play a secondary role. Sorry about that! Still, they were super important, especially the one on the right. Otherwise, how would all the Jerry Garcias, Phil Leshes, Bill Kreutzmanns, Bob Weirs, Ron McKernans, Mickey Harts, Keith Godchauxs, etc., have gotten into the house?)

Finally, a theme that really took us to new heights! 😊 The contest is over, but I can't resist sharing a few leftovers:

On Santo Antão, Cape Verde, the paths are sometimes so steep that staircases are mandatory, carved right into the mountain. 😊

In Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the staircase can be golden.

Or made of stone a little further away, in Angkor.

Speaking of steps, here are those of the Republic—the Grand Staircase of the Senate—which my senator kindly let me visit (and yes, I confirm the cafeteria is good!)

Good evening,

Thanks a TON for these two points.😉 Irony of the story: I read the debate between Raga and Sinforosa a bit late and started having doubts about that photo*. I reached out to Raga, but no reply. So I turned to VF and asked for it to be deleted. But nothing happened... In the end, I didn’t care anymore...

So, these are two points I technically shouldn’t have gotten. Oh well, all’s well that ends well...😏

hgb

*At first, I thought it was a staircase because it was meant for permanent use (I swear; I walked past it all the time). A ladder, on the other hand, is for temporary use. What made me doubt: a staircase usually has flat steps with a gentler incline...
BE Beajourbrez ·
Hello, It’s not easy to precisely define the boundaries between a staircase and a ladder because there are always exceptions to... prove the rule. I’d mentioned that you need to use your hands to climb a ladder, but then I was given the names of several staircases that also require it. Similarly, while you might think a ladder has to be movable or not for permanent use, the ladder on a crane is fixed to it and used every day. Besides, there’s nothing saying the winner’s staircase has to be fixed to the ground—even on wheels, it’d still be a staircase! More likely, a ladder must have rungs between two rails, and in that case, your ladder is definitely a staircase! 😊

Hi Jérôme,

Thanks so much for your reply. It’s really odd: we use staircases and ladders every day, but when it comes to naming their differences, we struggle a lot.

Similarly, while you might think a ladder has to be movable or not for permanent use, the ladder on a crane is fixed to it and used daily.

... or a fire truck ladder.

I also tried to come up with a definition, but there were always exceptions. I felt like I was trying to nail jelly to the wall... Impossible! Now I’m even happier about those two points I earned... Thanks!
