Converting a heavy-duty bus/coach/truck into a motorhome
FR

Translated into English.

KA Kalifamily ·
Hey everyone, Quick question: Can we register an S53 coach as a heavy vehicle with the DRIRE? And won't there be any problems if we then want to convert it into a motorhome? Thanks for your replies! kalifamily

I've been following this discussion for a while, and honestly no one's really managed to solve the driver's door issue. I went to the DRIRE in Hauts-de-Seine (Nanterre) and ran into an administrator (the technicians are on vacation, coming back Thursday).

While waiting for more info, he gave me some documents that spell out the points to respect and the documents you need to provide. But definitely check section 3.5.1 (emergency exits):

"A DOOR ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE PROVIDING DIRECT ACCESS TO THE DRIVER'S CAB IS OPTIONAL"

I think the real issue is whether the driver's left window has the right surface area for an emergency exit—2700cm² minimum with no dimension less than 45 cm.

I haven't found a coach myself yet, but I'm thinking about going for an FR1 or VanHool ACRON. On a tight budget though, it's not easy to find.

For those who've already passed all these tests—did you have to follow the same technical requirements? Hope this document helps everyone. Cheers!

Hi Bybyboxe

I think you're making a smart choice heading toward an FR1: I've driven one and it's fantastic! As I was telling Patrick26, the driver's door seems to be an unavoidable requirement for registering a coach as a 'campervan' on your registration document. For anyone reading this, take the time to check with your local DRIRE: the more information we have, the more we can share it, and the better we'll all know where we stand.

The Lyon DRIRE tells me that you can't register a coach as a commercial vehicle ('PL') with a VASP mention: could those of you with reliable information help clarify this for us?

In the meantime, to spark some inspiration, here's the link to Treffen, the only gathering (to my knowledge) of converted camper coaches in Europe

Hi, I'm discovering this forum and reaching out for some help. I work with an association that's creating a mobile Rrom radio station set up in a bus. It's a Renault S53 in good condition, low mileage, no seats and classified as a heavy vehicle. The goal is to install a living space, a radio studio and a small control room. Each section would be separated by wooden partitions with large plexiglass windows (so we can communicate between rooms and keep the light in).

For you, would this kind of setup be easy to get approved by the authorities? Since there's a living space, we need water reserves. Can they be stored in the holds?

Actually, I only have a few questions right now since I'm just starting to plan the setup. So your advice would be really valuable. Could you tell me what the important points to consider are?

Thank you in advance.

Hi "GX47" (so what do they call you?), thanks for your tip. I'll check with the town hall to see if that's possible, but right now I really need to find my bus—already spent several hours online and right now I'm still coming up empty, but "I'll have it one day, I'll have it" alright, back to it. Good luck to everyone, and thanks again. See you, Philippe.

Hey leforezien, I think you misread my message. The driver door is optional, so it's not mandatory (source: official DRIRE Nanterre documents + phone confirmation). As for your Lyon story, I reckon you ran into a junior trainee who had no clue. Why would they approve VASP motorhomes all across France but not in Lyon? You say you've driven FR1s—how much do they consume? Because we've talked about S53s (23 liters/100km) but not the bigger ones. That still counts toward the budget anyway. To sum it up: anyone with problems with the driver door, just call DRIRE NANTERRE at 01 56 38 02 61. I don't see why the other DRIRE offices would have different rules. Cheers everyone.

Hi Bybyboxe I've already had the documents you posted online in hand; the issue is that they date from 1999-2000 and things have apparently changed since then, unfortunately for us! I'm not claiming to have the definitive answer to our question, I'm just pointing out that you can get different takes depending on the DRIRE of one department or another, with people being more or less aware of this driver-cab issue. I'll still check with the Nanterre side. The FR1's fuel consumption varies depending on the route you take, your driving style, and the load you're carrying...it can range from 25L for an empty highway trip at a relaxed pace to 35L+ in town fully loaded. Plan for an average of 30L and I think you'll be fine. Consumption is higher than a good old S53 (which is to the coach what the 504 diesel is to the car) but the comfort is incomparable in terms of driving and living space (insulation, AC, large storage compartments). When traveling with a full group, you come out OK. See you soon

Hey everyone! ;-) Still working on my old S53M conversion—it's long and expensive... My girlfriend drives an FR1 professionally, and its fuel consumption is 50L per 100! That's wild...
YO Yolelion ·
There's an inspection before you can submit to DRIRE for fire safety standards. My motorhome was inspected by Bureau Veritas—€220 for the inspection, free re-inspection...
BY Bybyboxe ·
As for the FR1, I think I'm going to skip it—you've talked me out of it. One question about your S53: did you get it inspected at Véritas + DRIRE, or are you going to do that? If it's already been done, did it cause you any trouble with the driver's door? Because I'm really worried about buying a coach without a door and failing the inspection.

Hi, I'm discovering this forum and I'm taking the opportunity to reach out for help. I manage an association that's creating a mobile Rrom radio station set up in a bus. It's a Renault S53 in good condition, low mileage, no seats and reclassified as a heavy vehicle. The goal is to install a living section, a radio studio section, and a small control room. Each section would be separated by wooden partitions with large plexiglass windows (to communicate from one room to another and keep the light in).

For you, would this be an easily approvable setup by the DRIRE? Since there's a living section, we need water reserves. Can they be in the storage compartments?

Actually, I don't have many questions because I'm just starting to prepare the setup. Also, your advice would be really valuable. Could you tell me the important things to think about?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

for the storage compartments, unless you only drive in summer, I'd advise against it on an S45 or S53. Prefer the unused spaces like under the couch or others, but in a heated section. For wastewater the problem can be solved by putting salt in it, so you can put that in the storage compartments. for various permission issues, don't hesitate to consult the DRIRE of the department, automotive service that are there to answer this kind of questions.

Hi, I'm trying to convince my wife to get her heavy goods vehicle license so we can convert a coach into a motorhome.

I'd be interested in your experience.

How much fuel does it consume? What's the insurance cost? Where can I find the parts, etc? Thanks
SP Sputnick Regular ·
To get ideas on layout, collect catalogs from various RV and marine accessory suppliers. You'll find everything there, even windows for the body. Don't hesitate to use home-style equipment from hardware stores—tiles, shower trays, etc... Since you'll have the space, you might as well skip the cramped 'dinette' furniture (dollhouse stuff...). ;)

sergio 60: How do I get it home with a truck license (I understand from the forum that if I do it myself I become a highway bandit). How did you all do it?

Legally it's not possible. In practice it's not recommended, but it might slip through if you don't run into a stickler and don't have an accident—basically at your own risk. (In that case, remove seats beyond 9 places...)

For the windows, instead of masking them, can I paint the inside black with automotive paint?

Everything's possible and it can be a choice, but you're better off using adhesive vinyl like Vélédah or special glass paint. (Or wooden panels...)

Regarding gas and electricity, I thought I understood there's an inspection before DIRE, but who do I contact and how?

Veritas by appointment...

Do the seats have to be original, or can I set up dinettes like in a regular motorhome?

You can put whatever you want as long as it meets NFS 56 200 standards and later...

tsuka: What are the best low-budget solutions for water tanks, water pumps, and water heaters?

For the pump, you can use a manual one (foot-operated...) with tanks on the roof in PVC pipes (large diameter like plumbing...) or tanks found at heavy-duty scrapyards.

For the water heater, apart from salvage, a roof heating system like in houses (looks like electric solar panels...)

Is there a specific standard for high and low vents when you have gas? I'd like to put gas bottles in the rear cargo area—what do I need to modify?

Yes, NFS 56 200 standards and later—check with someone who already has the AFNOR manual (La Défense 92) or buy it...

You need to run gas pipes in copper with distribution blocks (shutoff valves...) see NFS 56 200 or RV accessory suppliers.

Hey, I'm the happy owner of a Setra Kassbohrer 213 H I picked up for about €2,200 with over 900,000 km on it. These are really solid vehicles, but it's on you to check out the condition and maintenance. I've already put over 2,500 km on mine (conversion still in progress, registration not in order yet!!) without any issues... Fair warning though—maintenance is pricier than on an S53 or 45... but you get more comfort in return... Also watch out for the center aisle you'll often find in this type. If you're tall it's not ideal but still totally doable (I'm over 1m80) and keep an eye on fuel consumption... these are mainly Mercedes-based mechanically with engines over 410 hp most of the time so... Don't hesitate if you want more info ;) Cheers

Hey, On my end, I just bought a fitted-out bus like yours. It's a Setra ex 56-seater. I'll send you some photos to give you some ideas. On mine, there's a partition between the cab and the lounge, and since my goal is to live in it (while waiting to self-build a house) and travel a bit, I'd like to remove the partition and insulate the cab side to enlarge the lounge. I'm imagining removable dashboard paneling, removing the seats, and insulation panels on the windshield and ceiling.

What do you think? And let me know if you have any tips on the materials to use.

I'll send you some photos and plans to give you an idea of my awesome bus.

FINALLY THINGS ARE GETTING BACK TO NORMAL FOR OUR DRIVER DOORS!!

Indeed, after various direct contacts with the ministry, an explanatory circular should be sent to all DRIRE offices throughout France.

Essentially:

The technical specifications provided by the mining engineers regarding motor caravans (necessarily classified as light vehicles and therefore subject to driver door requirements) will be modified for heavy vehicles.

The classification will be VASP, the subclass will be caravan rather than motor caravan, so that the general bodywork requirements are those of heavy vehicles, not light vehicles.

I think they should all have received the info by mid-January, so hold off on your procedures, enjoy the holidays, and get back to work at the end of January to request an individual type approval under this new classification.

Hi,

For your info, I just got my S53 registered with Veritas and then drire. To confirm what Patrick said, here are some details on the isolated type-approval report: National category: VSAP Body type: CARAVAN

All set, no problems. Tips for anyone wanting to do this kind of modification: Think "no problem, there's a solution" — get the campervan conversion guide (AFNOR) and maybe grab some of the relevant standards (but they're expensive). Read them, then read them again, and make sure your definitions match AFNOR's (see the glossary). Polish your isolated type-approval application (complete and clean). Don't let yourself think too far ahead, one thing at a time (but that's personal maybe).

Tomorrow it's off to the prefecture to get the registration sorted.

I don't get it, all of that's been relevant in the DRIREs🤪 for a long time, are you saying some wouldn't have applied that since July 1st???🤪...I doubt it😮! I want proof😄 Alright, drive easy and build easy, and besides, the driver's door is just a matter of interpretation - you need driver access, period! You need a driver emergency exit, period! Don't complicate things for yourself; if you're unsure ask the DRIRE a question, they like that (the technicians, not the secretaries) Go in peace😇

the difference between the S53R and RX is the generation the R models were manufactured between 1979 and 1986, they have the black plastic grille with the big Renault logos and the gear shifter on the dashboard, the next generation the RX have the metal grille and the gear shifter on the floor, no other known difference as far as I know!! ps I could send you photos if you want but if you search through the old messages there's already quite a few.

Hi,

I think the location is marked in the red section on page 2, article 10. On my '88 S53, it was just below the windshield, behind the grille, on a steel pillar. But the DRIRE inspector should find it right away, no problem. Hang in there—it'll be over soon, it'll work itself out… Just on merit.

thanks he just asked me for the chassis number which is very visible behind the radiator grille

for info regarding the driver's door: i added a window-breaking hammer the window fits the dimensions in question! no problem at all

so here's the DRIRE report!

the few points i need to review it went really well i don't have the complete file yet just a few formalities left to handle! i didn't put the labels on the road-approved seats i'm also missing a gas certification sticker that needs to go near the installation (Véritas forgot to give it to me!) i had an expired fire extinguisher (but i already knew that but since it's apparently going to be classified as a truck they're asking for a 5kg one but they're going to check they're not sure!) the tachograph is set to 100km/h with a 100km/h certification to modify it it's just a screw to adjust inside the tacho + get it certified by an approved garage (it's the Renault truck garage 1km from my place that gave me the info and is doing my certification tomorrow!) technical control: that's the new thing with the DRIRE system you need the technical control to pass the DRIRE but the vehicle no longer matches the registration certificate so it's normally impossible to pass so i'll go to the control and they'll indicate the modifications don't match the vehicle the rest the DRIRE will take care of

finally just minor stuff after that i can send them the documents and photos and everything can be done without me going back to the DRIRE! and even if i have to go back i won't have to pay again!!

that's all!

Hi,

I've also considered building a camper van from a bus. I even went to visit the end-of-life vehicle stock in south Montélimar. Alas, faced with the condition of the buses on display and lacking the skills, not having found reliable advisors, I resigned myself to buying a standard 'profile' motorhome instead. Too bad, because as you say, it would've been much better to have all that extra space.
GX GX47 Regular ·
Hey, the tachograph thing is annoying, since you don't need it afterwards. I managed to get through the DRIRE just 3 days before the 2-year inspection 😎 and before my CT expired 1.5 months later 😎😉 True, I had to rush the work - I'd filed the paperwork before finishing the modifications (silly move, but it actually saved me time) - I finished the bus at 5 AM and had an appointment at Véritas at 8 AM (1 hour drive) 😎cool... shower, coffee and off we go 😄

PS For a motorhome, the fire extinguisher should be 1 or 2 kg not 5, check the AFNOR guide for the road seat labels it's a requirement (requested in the application), they even made me add "seat not usable while driving" on the bench bed.

Safe travels.

Well, I've got some time to ramble on... I'm a coach and bus driver—both tour routes and city routes—and let me tell you something. A bus is like a mouse: if the head gets through, the rest will follow. But it's all about having a good eye, and if you go down a narrow passage, you'd better spot it quick before you have to back up 100 meters, shake up half the city, throw out some choice words to stay sharp, and worst of all—you'll get yourself noticed! And as they say: live happy, live quiet! To the question "Is it easy to get around with a 12-by-2.35-meter block, find parking, and deal with all the other joys that come with it?" I answer yes without any hesitation. But why would you want to????? I've only ever driven buses and tour coaches in a professional capacity. So I got to enjoy those reserved bus parking spots—it's pure bliss! I'm convinced a camper bus would be cleared out within half an hour, not by official traffic wardens but by one of my fellow drivers or by me with a friendly shout, because those spots are lifesavers for someone who actually works—and yet paradoxically occupied (pardon the bluntness) by the local crowd. THERE'S NO EXCUSE FOR IT. Relax, I'll explain; sometimes I have a bit of free time to spare an hour or two. I've always managed to find a spot where I wouldn't be spotted by the old lady with her howling poodle. (Sorry to you too, ma'am, but you're a valued customer when I'm working, and suddenly when the shift ends you turn into a goat!) And here's another thing: those secondary spots are much nicer for a long vehicle like a camper bus. You're rarely far from town, and even if you are, you've still got public transit—heh heh. Come take the bus, come take mine! All joking aside, when I do my shopping, I prefer taking my PR-14. In supermarket car parks there's always room for everyone. If it were a camper bus, I'd definitely need to plan for a backup vehicle—a moped, scooter, or bike. As an anecdote: I've done my time in big cities (Nice, Reims, Paris, ...). Even while working, I always had an old bike tucked away. Let me tell you, you should've seen those old-timer drivers' faces when they had to walk a quarter hour just to get a pack of Gitanes. I got a real laugh heading down the Promenade des Anglais with a swim shirt on under my jeans! When it comes to parking spots, there's always one thing or another—you get the idea. One downside though: those wonderful signs saying "No Camper Vans by Order of God and Municipality"—that's when you're forced to move on! And these delightful signs pop up like mushrooms! What about zones for traveling people? I've heard that a town with more than 3,000 residents is supposed to have them.... eh

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and wasn't sure where to post this topic, but ultimately I think this is where I'll get the most answers.

I'd like to buy a bus for my rugby club to transport the team for matches and other trips. But with my budget, it would have to be a standard city bus, like a Heuliez PR100, GX107, or R312.

I've read through the 18 pages 😕 and there are still a few things I'd like to ask: I was thinking of replacing the standard bench seats with Renault 25 seats, but is that legal? Since these are usually buses with lots of standing room and about thirty or so seats, can we add bench seating?

And finally, one last question: decoration—has anyone here tried repainting part of the bodywork? Just to personalize the bus for the club.

I'm going to try to get my TC license through Fongécif, and then ask the club for a minibus so I can use it for trips and break even on the bus over 4 or 5 years.

I'm looking forward to your comments. And if I'm off-topic, I'll move this message.

See you, Pierrot

Hey Rugbi-man, you read too fast! I mean, 18 pages—by the time you reach the end you've forgotten it all, especially with all the contradictions and re-assertions...

Anyway: forget about that idea, you can't turn a bus into a coach. It'll only pass inspection with the original seats in their original positions! So look for a coach being decommissioned—school buses get retired between 15 and 20 years depending on the département, and you'll find them in good condition for 2000 to 2500 euros max, and you won't have anything to do. (Decommissioned buses from public and private operators are still usable by associations—check with your local DRIRE or look at tour coaches that are already equipped.)

For décor: 2 options—paint (DIY if you know your stuff, or take it to an auto body shop) or vinyl wrap (any vinyl signage professional can handle). The advantage is micro-perforated vinyl for the windows; the downside is the cost. But for a rugby club, surely you've got sponsors?

That's all, happy holidays!

As for seats, forget it - it's either the original seats or certified seats meeting current standards = expensive, mandatory seatbelts, certified anchor points <= hard to find!

For the radiators, I was told they're in series, not parallel. In summer we don't run the fans so it doesn't heat up! But you just have to remove them, put the hoses back underneath and connect them with a piece of copper pipe - it's not hard to do except for the one at the very back, where underneath you hit a badly-placed partition. Mine comes under the bed, so I just slipped a piece of copper pipe under there and don't have any issues.

PS - I haven't taken the others apart yet, but they're in my conversion where they don't bother me right now, and I checked and apparently nothing's blocking anything underneath!

We'll see.

Anyway, I'm still waiting for a response from DRIRE but it should be fine!!

My supervisor has signed it - I'm just waiting for the 2nd signature from his colleague who's on vacation. (For certification, you need 2 DRIRE staff members to sign the file!)
