Happy New Year Ma Tila,

Brittany is beautiful!

Is it: After all, Brittany is beautiful! (despite everything people might say about it.....) or Brittany is beautiful too! (compared to Africa, which is where our aspirations on this forum are focused)

It’s crazy how much an assertion can hide in terms of subtext...... or not!!

Hugs!

Brittany is beautiful! 😉

The gray beach and in the background, the Pointe de Port Manech. Just before, on the right, the bay with the mouths of the Aven and Belon rivers and the lovely Kerfany beach... My whole childhood...🙂

Hi Pierre, Namib31 back and prepping for my 4th trip for summer 2015!!!! Do you know if wild camping is allowed in Hartmann Valley or not? Do you have any reliable GPS coordinates for nice camping spots in that valley? (I’ll be coming via Marienfluss.) I already did Marienfluss two years ago, and this time I’m bringing a couple of friends to show them Marienfluss (via Marble Mine) and then Hartmann (with camping on-site)....how far north can we go?...the Kunene River like in Marienfluss?...aren’t the Serena rangers a bit of a pain with "outsiders" in their beautiful valley who don’t sleep at their lodge?!!!!

After that, I plan to head down to Puros, following the Skeleton Coast boundary via Groendrom (off-road south from Hartmann), then a stretch of the D3707 to reach Orupenbe, followed by the stunning descent toward Puros via the Khumib River bed and then Hoarusib (amazing—I’d already done it three years ago). Thanks for your advice! Long live Namibia! PS: I sent you one of the great photos from Marienfluss in 2012
PI Pierre77N Globetrotter ·
Hi Laurent,

I haven’t (yet?) made it to the end of the Hartman Valley.

The legal situation isn’t very clear, but I don’t think there’s any issue with camping—there’s hardly anyone in that area! I’m not entirely sure which route you’re planning to take between Marienfluss and Hartman, but all the more or less direct tracks (except the one that goes through all the "droms") cross sacred Himba regions and are taboo. I know some people still take them—everyone does what they want... Personally, it bothers me more than trespassing on a Wilderness Safaris concession.

I know the track via Groendrom: rocks, rocks, and more rocks. No driving difficulties. After that, I’ll let you discover it for yourself! 😏
NA Namib31 ·
hi Pierre actually, the route between Marienfluss and Hartmann was sent to me by our "mutual friend" Johan (as a BaseCamp file that I can't attach to this message) but I think I'll take the "normal" route via the "droms" See you soon
PI Pissenlix ·
Pierre,

Wilderness Safaris is no longer the "concessionaire" for the Skeleton Coast. Everything is being reallocated to several tour operators. Wilderness was struggling financially.

Now, not just anyone can cross this area, unfortunately. You’ll still need to go through authorized tour operators... or find a way around it!
PI Pierre77N Globetrotter ·
I'm talking about Serra Cafema, which still seems to belong to Wilderness Safaris if we go by their website: http://www.wilderness-safaris.com/camps/serra-cafema-camp Hartmann isn’t inside the national park, but some try to claim the area anyway. But no matter the operator, the question remains the same.

I’m more bothered about breaking Himba taboos than commercial ones! 😏

hey Max,

With or without mist, the area looks really cool. I'm sure the temperatures are bearable in winter (southern hemisphere)!!! 😏😏

PI Pierre77N Globetrotter ·
We had scorching heat there in early August 2010. Up to 42°C in the shade at the hottest part of the day and over 30°C at night. The valley is at low altitude, so it’s naturally hotter than 1,000 or 1,500 meters higher up on the plateau that makes up most of the country. But according to locals, these temperatures were still completely abnormal for the season.
DI Diamina Globetrotter ·
Thanks Pierre for this info—I’ll reconsider the question. Above 25°C, I melt!!!!😏

Hopefully the route you recommended last year between the two valleys isn’t sacred, even if it *is* a heck of a track! I’m asking because if the situation improves, I’ll likely be passing through there again—just in the opposite direction—in the coming weeks.

what does this photo represent?

Well, after much reflection and extensive research in many very scholarly works, I’ve come to the surprising conclusion: it’s the inside of a hippopotamus’s skull. A dead hippopotamus, needless to say. There you go... Yeah, I know—I’m pretty good.

What’s great about this travel journal is that the second read is even better.
Erwan La vie est belle ! La vie est belle ! Je me tue à vous le dire disait la fleur. Et elle meurt ( J.Prévert)
VO Voyajou Globetrotter ·
Playful Erwan, didn't you find anything fresher and of better quality than this stale travel journal? After all, so much has been written in the past two years—*and even better stuff*—so why this resurrection?

And if the second read was better, the third time’s the charm: While hosting this game between two bivouacs, my answer claiming it was a hippopotamus brain was wrong, and I corrected it later under the watchful eye of someone who knew: it’s an elephant skull! It’s in Kennedy (Zimbabwe), but it’s not his, and having seen it again since, I must admit that—just like you and me and like here—synapses deteriorate (and the smell gets worse). On my next trip, I’ll try to focus on the sparrow’s brain and figure out why this species, far from being endangered, is on its way to becoming the Nile perch.

Hello, Darwin? What a nightmare!
AI AirOne Globetrotter ·
My mistake. An elephant. I’m really bad at this...

But I don’t have the brain of a sparrow and can still appreciate these old things dug up after 2, 12, or even 22 years of well-deserved rest. It’s actually surprising to see that while their brains are everywhere, the sparrows themselves are disappearing.

So, an elephant...

Still, plan on bringing a bottle of vintage Coke to celebrate! ;P
