Where to stay in Hakone? (Japan)

Hi everyone,

We're heading to Hakone in April with two kids aged 6 and 11. We’ve decided to spend 2 nights in the area, but I’m struggling to pinpoint the best spots to stay. Is it better to stay in Hakone Yumoto? I’ve also seen Moto Hakone, which looks nice, or Gora. Since we’ll be using public transport, we need somewhere easily accessible (with restaurants and shops close to the accommodation if possible). We’d love to treat ourselves to a ryokan in this area—ideally with a nice view and a private onsen. Is it better to be near the lake and the boats, or does it not matter? If you have any tips or accommodation recommendations, I’d love to hear them! :)

Thanks in advance!!

1) Close to the lake means far from the train; even though there are buses that connect to Hakone Yumoto station. 2) Gora and the other stations on the "Hakone Tozan" line (famous for its switch-backs) don’t really offer views since they’re set in the valley floor, but from Gora, you can take the funicular up for a view of Mt. Fuji. 3) Even if the area isn’t exactly "touristy," Odawara might be worth considering for accommodation. It’s also a major rail hub, easily accessible by Shinkansen (Kodama only), JR Tokaido Hon-sen, and Odakyu (which includes the Hakone Tozan line). 4) A great day-trip plan: - Take the Hakone Tozan up to Gora - Ride the funicular up - Descend toward the lake via the ropeway - Cruise the lake by boat - Return to Hakone Yumoto by bus - Head back to your starting point by Odakyu train—could even be Tokyo, since the Odakyu terminus is in Shinjuku.
