Hi there, How do you get from Tamatave or Foulpointe to Sainte Marie Island? We’re heading to Madagascar from July 16 to 29, 2025. How many days should we stay to explore the area? What’s there to do in Tamatave, Foulpointe, or Sainte Marie Island? What should we visit? Thanks everyone!

Hi there, Boats usually leave from Soniarainvongo or Mahabo on the RN5, but you can buy a ticket that includes transport from Tamatave. The best-known companies are Cap Ste Marie and Condor. They’re based in Tamatave, but transfers are done by road from Tamatave to Soniara Invongo or Mahabo, then by fairly modern boat. However, be careful—between June and early September, the southeast trade winds can make the crossing a bit epic. Foulpointe is more of a beach destination, very popular with locals from the highlands. In Tamatave, the seaside and the bazaar make it a real port city. For Sainte Marie, plan at least 3–4 days, but a week is even better. You can also fly with Air Madagascar—they’ve become much more reliable (schedules and number of flights). That’s the quick rundown!

For Sainte Marie, the boat leaves from Soanierana Ivongo. We used to go from Tamatave by *taxi-brousse*, but not in one go. It’s better to make a stop in Foulpointe, spend a day or two there, then head to Mahambo (nice beach). You can also stop in Fenerive... and finally Soanierana Ivongo. On Sainte Marie, I recommend stopping at "L’Hôtel" Le Rocher chez Emilienne in Maromandia. From the village, there’s a forest path that crosses the island—great hike through the forest and a beautiful beach on the other side. Visit the pirate cemetery in the south of the island... and don’t miss a trip to Île aux Nattes. For me, all this is a bit dated—the tarmac hadn’t arrived yet.

Hi there, It's possible to do either the outbound, the return, or both legs to Sainte Marie by plane, which saves you from having to redo the whole journey and the rough road from Tana to Tamatave and then to Sainte Marie on the way there and back.

On the way there, you can stop in Andasibe to explore the forest and parks to see lemurs. Continuing on, you can take a tour and stop by the Pangalanes Canal before reaching Tamatave. In Tamatave itself, the city is nice for a day or two, though I can't say exactly what there is to do since I didn’t do much besides walking around, heading to the beach, and just chilling here and there.

I’ve never had time to stop on the way to the Sainte Marie ferry dock, but it’s definitely worth it since the coast is really beautiful.

For Sainte Marie, a week is great if you have the time. Pirate cemetery, doing the "tour" of the island by scooter or tuk-tuk, Ampanihy Bay (mangrove and beach), a trip to the sand islets, snorkeling here and there, the tour of Île aux Nattes, possibly diving... In short, there’s plenty to do and see, but also plenty of opportunities to do nothing and just relax.

There are quite a few really nice places to stay depending on your budget.

It’s pretty great to stay for 2 nights or more on Île aux Nattes to really enjoy the spot.

Happy planning
