Are we allowed to take photos inside the tombs and mastabas in Egypt? Thanks

Hello everyone, Yes, it’s actually allowed now for over a year, and with a camera, but still no flash. So make sure to adjust your camera settings—some have a special mode for indoor photography without flash. Also, given the quality of smartphones these days, you can always use yours for photos, but choose the highest resolution. Just a heads-up, though: you can’t film indoors, especially in certain temples like Abydos or Abu Simbel. For any other info, no problem! Thoutmosis

Thanks for your reply. I just want to make sure I understood correctly. We can take photos without flash, even inside the tombs, but we can’t film in places like Abydos (though we can still take photos). Thanks

Hello,

Yes, I confirm what Thoutmosis said and what you understood correctly.

I’d add that in Giza specifically, inside the pyramids, photos taken with anything other than a smartphone are theoretically prohibited.

Best regards

About a dozen years ago, the only places where photography was prohibited were the Luxor Museum, the Cairo Museum, and the tombs. With a bit of discretion, we took quite a few photos in the Cairo Museum.

Anyway, you’ll have your gear with you, and you’ll see what’s written—or not—on the signs.

However, never use a flash, as that’s borderline criminal.
