April 2026 Theme Discussion: Feeling Peachy?

Good evening Hery,

I always find your comments very interesting, even if I sometimes reach different conclusions... For example:

Photo #1 by Rouquine38 (the puffin), but a bit dark for my taste.

I actually think the black background is a great choice: it really makes the white belly and the beak stand out.

Absolutely! And that photo is technically very well done. To me, it looks a bit like a "studio" shot. I think it’s beautiful—the black background is a great idea—but I didn’t picture such simplicity for the contest. I prefer livelier, more cheerful things. But hey, it’s all a matter of taste, right? 😉

On the other hand, your choice of photo #2 by Pagaljavab surprises me a little. Now *I* find it too dark, while their #3 is very well done, in my opinion, of course.

I’m not a fan of low-angle shots—I think they flatten the subjects, especially in a market! But photo #2 has something extra. You have to imagine it without the technical flaws.

It looks like there’s a numbering error in your vote (even though everything’s great with Philippebrg 😉)

You’ve got a sharp eye, Voyou! 😉 Funny story—I actually hesitated between his photos 2 and 3...

Thanks, Kate—I totally agree with what you said, and I’m just starting to explore these setting concepts that used to feel so distant to me...

Not only do I have a travel journal to finish, but I’ve also started one for my current trip to the Marwari wedding I was invited to for 7 days. An incredible experience! I’m actually trying to work on my photos this time because the material is just stunning. I’m writing this from my bus bunk on the way to Udaipur—it’s almost the end of the trip 😢

Since you’re talking a bit about my little puffin, I’ll dive into some technique here. The subject is positioned at the edge of the cliff, with a ray of sunlight on it—I’m not going to miss this opportunity, especially since it stands out against the black background. So, what settings did I use? Given that the photo was barely edited? Apart from the exposure triangle, the most important thing is to lower the exposure to -2 or slightly less to get that result 😊

I put my foot in my mouth—the third photo by Pagal isn’t a low-angle shot but a high-angle one, top to bottom. Oh well, nobody cares, but I know what I meant 😏

I said a --, photo 3 by Pagal isn’t a low-angle shot but a high-angle one, from top to bottom. Well, everyone couldn’t care less but I get myself

I had noticed and was (very) surprised by that coming from you. But maybe it’s not necessary to point out mistakes written in the forum...!! And who doesn’t make mistakes????!! 😉

Cheers.

Plus, there are members who’ve made such progress and take photos like pros (you’re one of them) that it makes you hesitate if you’re not at their level. Do you still want them with their “ordinary” photos, even if they’re taken with the joy of fellow travelers? It would increase the number of participants but might lower the overall quality of the contest photos.

But of course we want everyone! 🙂

Personally, I enjoy photography but I’m no expert—I just post my best vacation shots in the contest. After dozens of entries, I finally won first place 😛. Goes to show!

Hello Just one little regret: the lack of participation.

Yeah, as mentioned before, the theme had already been "fished out" 😉

But even if there were fewer photos than usual, I loved that this contest brought mostly snapshots of everyday life 🙂

It’s a nice change from landscape or monument photos 😏

Imagine, there was a time when even I won a contest 😄. The theme was spirituality.

Not the photographer’s, but maybe the attentive visitor’s at the exhibit, who notices Rouquine tripping over the nets during her vote. Angélique

I didn’t get Jean-Luc 🤔 Maybe I voted too quickly—plus, I was on my smartphone—but it still seems correct to me 😅

Good evening Catherine!

To me, it looks a bit like a "studio."

Exactly, “studio” is the keyword here. When I saw the photo, I immediately thought of the one with that deer (from the “Bois” contest), which had really thrown me off. On top of that, I didn’t know at the time that a deer’s “parure” is called “bois” in French (in German it’s “Geweih”)... 😉

but I didn’t picture this kind of simplicity for the contest illustration.

Yeah, I agree with you. That’s why I hesitated at first. The same goes for the Senegal photo. A few fish in a salad bowl or in a beak don’t necessarily reflect the proposed theme.

But I ended up cutting myself some slack.

Have a good evening, hgb
