hi there, I took this route 25 years ago, and this time I’ll be leaving from Tamatave heading south to Fort Dauphin. How far can you realistically get by bush taxi these days? Any firsthand experience or tips are welcome (just to clarify: we’re traveling on foot with backpacks, not by motorbike!). Thanks! !

Hi there, I’m not entirely sure I understand the question. From Tamatave to Fort Dauphin, you can take a bush taxi the whole way. There’s no southern limit. You could also consider a mix of boat and bush taxi by taking the boats on the Pangalanes Canal. Finally, there’s also the option—more comfortable than the bush taxi—of joining carpool groups heading up or down empty to FD that offer seats.
