Negative Portrait of Mauritius in Lonely Planet

Hey everyone,

After a crazy intense work year, we’re heading off soon to relax for a week in Mauritius.

It’s great to unwind, but it’d be a shame to just lie around on a sun lounger the whole time.

So I grabbed my favorite (little) travel guide, the Lonely Planet, a few days ago, and the picture it paints isn’t exactly inspiring. Word for word: - Pamplemousses Garden: “more or less well-maintained, it’s lost its former glory” - Île aux Cerfs: tourists “flock there in crowds” - Blue Bay Marine Park: “some now call it a morning cemetery” (given the state of the coral garden) - Le Morne Peninsula: “big hotel chains have taken over the beaches”

Not sure what to make of all this :/

Hi there, It really depends on what you're looking for and what you like. Personally, I don’t have amazing memories of Mauritius. Maybe my expectations were too high, and in the end, I was really disappointed. I can’t fault the comments—I agree with them. I didn’t find the beaches great, and I wasn’t particularly won over by the interior either. If what you love is snorkeling, it’s honestly pretty mediocre. Apart from a few spots where they take you because there are a few poor little clownfish dueling around some surviving anemones in the middle of destroyed coral, there are packs of stray dogs all over the island and trash along the roads, etc. I’m sure if you pick a top hotel in a good location, you can relax in great conditions while mixing in a few walks here and there. If what you love is also discovering a culture, a country, enjoying hikes, and nice snorkeling spots, and you’re not looking for the fanciest hotels with the best standards... honestly, I prefer all the other islands in the Indian Ocean (though I can’t speak for the Seychelles). But as I said, I was expecting Eden, and the disappointment was just as big. Probably with lower expectations, I wouldn’t have been as let down. I don’t have a *bad* memory of it at all, but I much prefer Madagascar, Zanzibar, Réunion...

Hello,

If I understand correctly, the trip is already booked?

For a relaxing stay, Mauritius isn’t a bad choice. The food is pretty good, Ti punch is delicious, and some beaches are really beautiful—especially Le Morne.

That said, for a truly relaxing trip, it’s best to avoid our summer because the water temperature is quite chilly in winter and early southern spring.

For activities, you can hike, go canoeing, or visit some plantations.

The Pamplemousses Garden is definitely one to skip.

Maybe a few ideas to check out in this travel journal?

I particularly loved the Ferney Valley, Labourdonnais Castle, the hike up Le Pouce, Grand Bassin, Gris-Gris and the Blowhole, and Eureka House.

It wasn’t warm enough for water activities, so I don’t have an opinion on Île aux Cerfs.

Blue Bay is a nice spot, but I didn’t see a ton of fish there. (snorkeling from the beach)

Well, that’s not exactly pretty what you’re telling me 😕

On the other hand, this relaxing getaway should probably happen far from our summer because the water temperature is quite chilly in winter and at the start of the southern hemisphere spring.

We’re leaving in 2 weeks 😉

Hello

I was there, I saw it, I lived it 😉

Okay, so I think the LP is just unfairly bashing Mauritius.

Le Morne: the public beach at Le Morne is gorgeous. Chamarel: yeah, it’s not huge, but it’s still surprising and well laid out (and I think you absolutely have to visit the rum distillery 🙂) Île aux Cerfs: I really didn’t find it crowded at all. It’s big enough that people aren’t all packed into the same spot. The tour with chilling on the island + snorkeling session (super nice) + waterfall + meal is great. And you can easily find a boat in Trou Pamplemousses: I admit I didn’t go—I wasn’t motivated, it’s not my main interest But we did visit the Château de Labourdonnais—the vintage vibe is cool

And wow, the view when arriving at Cap Malheureux was absolutely stunning! 😎

The only letdown was the weather. We were there in the off-season, and it kept switching from scorching sun to cold wind and low clouds several times a day. The pool was cold, the sea wasn’t warm, and I ended up catching a cold that turned into a sore throat 😕

Le Morne is definitely number one! 😛

Hi Michael

I was there, I saw it, I lived it 😉 Anyway, I think LP is just unfairly bashing Mauritius.

Sometimes I feel like I didn’t visit the same country as some of my fellow travelers. At the end of the day, nothing beats seeing it for yourself.

It's clear, nothing beats going to see for yourself.

Personally, I wish I’d read LP beforehand—I don’t see much in what they say that I wouldn’t have said myself, and I don’t find any gratuitous bashing, just a point of view that would’ve been really useful to me.

But it just goes to show that tastes and colors vary, and so do people’s feelings, which confirms—if it were even needed—that we all experience travel in our own way and evaluate our stays differently. And that’s a good thing.
