Bonjour, à la recherche frénétique de billets d'avion pour les Etats-Unis, je me pose une question concernant la durée minimum à prévoir lors d'une escale aux Etats-Unis.
En effet, je dois me rendre à San Diego de Nantes et il y aura forcément deux escales (l'une à Paris ou Amsterdam vraisemblablement) et l'autre sur le territoire américain avant de reprendre un avion pour SD.
Beaucoup de compagnies prévoient au cours d'une escale entre 3/4 d'heure et 1 heure d'escale pour le changement d'avion. Evidemment c'est tentant car lorsqu'on fait un voyage aussi long, chaque heure de voyage gagnée est à prendre en compte, cependant je me demande si ce n'est pas prendre beaucoup de risques liés aux retards, aux contrôles douanes, au suivi des bagages etc.
Quels sont vos expériences à ce sujet??? Merci pour votre aide.
Quand tu arrives aux Etats Unis :
- tu passes l'immigration (empreintes, photos, quelques questions...),
- tu récupères tes bagages,
- tu passes la douane avec tes bagages,
- tu redéposes tes bagages sur un tapis, juste après la douane,
- tu t'occupes de ta correspondance,
- et tu repasses les contrôles de sécurité.
Même si ton avion arrive à l’heure, s'il y a très peu de monde à l'immigration, 1h c’est vraiment très très juste….

Cela dépend aussi de ton avioneur ; si tu pars avec AF de Nantes puis CDG puis USA, ton escale à CDG peut être courte car tu ne changes pas de compagnie. S'il faut que tu récupères tes bagages, changes d'aérogare, c'est court.

* je sais que les vols du matin de toulouse à amsterdam sont souvent retardés (appareils plus tout jeune )
bien sur si tu n'as qu'un seul billet et que tu rates ta connexion pour cause de retard la compagnie se doit de te rerouter mais il faut attendre les vols suivants (et qu'il y ait de la place) tout depend donc du risque que tu est pret à prendre de perdre un jour de congé (voir plus si tu as des reservation d'hotels ou de voiture)
si tu pars seul pour un TDM et que tu n'es pas pressé pas de probleme tentes le coup
si tu pars en famille à 5 pour 15 jours de congés c'est toi qui voit 😉

Mais bouhhh que c'est compliqué: soit on me propose des escales d'une heure tout au plus, soit ce sont des voyages d'une quarantaine d'heures avec des heures interminables d'attente. Je vais essayer de trouver au mieux. 😕
tu peux aussi t'arreter à LA y passer la nuit et prendre un vehicule pour SD
ou monter à paris pour prendre un vol (dans ce cas là prends bcp de mou aussi ) mais cela se calcule en terme de temps mais aussi de tarif (plus de choix au depart de paris)

2011 Chicago again! 2h45 d'attente à l'immigration (en cause le nombre de plus en plus réduit de guichets ouverts dûs aux horaires de fin de journée + le bor...l que mettent les voyageurs se trompant de file)
Heureusement Chicago n'était pas une escale... même compagnie
2 heures semblent assurer une marge confortable, en moyenne .... nous visons maintenant et tant pis pour le temps perdu ( retraite...😎) plus de 3 heures pour ne plus stresser et s'assurer que les voyageurs et les bagages arrivent en même temps.

PS: LA - San Diego se fait gentiment en 2h de voiture. Question donc : quel temps passerez vous entre l’atterrissage à LA et l'arrivée à San Diego... A calculer en tenant compte de la fatigue du voyage et de l'heure d'arrivée

A Houston (l'enfer 😠), on a raté l'avion suivant, malgré une escale de 3h45 initialement prévue (1h45 de retard d'avion + 2h d'attente à l'immigration 🤪).
A New York, passage souvent rapide. 😎
Bref, ça dépend de l'aéroport et de l'heure d'arrivée. Eviter de choisir le dernier vol de la journée, pour avoir une solution de secours. 🙂
Au moins 2 hrs entre les vols, surtout si tu passes à la douane en arrivant. Même avec 2 hrs, j'ai raté ma correspondance pour San Francisco (a Houston) et je n'ai pu repartir que le lendemain. Et pas de frais d'hotel remboursés par la compagnie 🙁.
Prends bien un plan de l'aeroport avant de partir. Tu peux verifier ou sont les differents terminaux.

Nous aurons ce type d' escale au retour de Denver en septembre . Même compagnie , aéroport "familial" , pas de formalités "américaines" , il parait qui' il n' y a rien à craindre .

Pour l'escale à Reykyavik, l'avion au départ a tout intérêt à attendre les passagers avec correspondance s'il ne veut pas partir vide (ou presque). 😏😏😄
Partant souvent de Nantes, je trouve l'aéroport d'Amsterdam très agréable et fonctionnel par rapport à Roissy.
Il existe une file spéciale pour les connexions courtes (inférieure à 1 heure.)
Par contre Régional nous a modifié l'horaire au départ de Nantes de 5 heures (3 semaines avant le départ) , le vol de fin d 'après midi et devenu fin de matinée avec allongement de l'escale d'autant.
Les formalités "américaines" sont faites en Amérique. 😛
Pas toujours, au Canada les formalités américaines se sont au Canada, avant le départ. Donc aucun contrôle à faire une fois arrivé sur le territoire étatsunien.

Bonsoir , je pense que la durée minimale d'une escale aux USA en provenance d'Europe est de 2h30 car il ne faut pas oublier que les vols ne sont jamais à l'heure, que l'on doit passer la douane ( or cela peut-étre trés long) , qu'il faut un certain temps pour se rendre à la prochaine corespondance.

From what I've found, it doesn't exist everywhere anymore, but that's okay! We're happy to take detours along the way. We're open to visiting less touristy or even completely off-the-beaten-path spots.

Hi fellow travelers, do you think there’s a real benefit to spending 2-3 days in Yosemite when I’ll already be spending a week in Banff and Jasper in the Canadian Rockies? Won’t it feel a bit redundant? I’m asking because Yosemite is expensive (I’d go with an agency from SF, staying in a cabin, since I’ll be solo and without a car) and apparently packed.

After that, we’re heading to Sherbrooke to visit our daughter, who’s studying at the university there. We’ll spend 3 days with her, and then, since she has a break that week, we’re taking her along for 3 days in Quebec City.
We’ve planned to visit Montmorency Falls and Île d'Orléans.
I’d love to hear what route you’d recommend for the drive from Sherbrooke to Quebec City—we’ll have the whole day to take it easy.

I know you can’t see into the future any better than I can, so I’m obviously not asking what the wildfire situation will be like in a month...
But if any of you could let me know if, CURRENTLY, there are major difficulties—not just for locals, of course, but for tourists as well?
We’re hesitating between taking the chance or canceling what we still can.

A friend is renting a car for an upcoming trip during the All Saints' holiday.
Nowadays, all rental cars come with GPS, but do you know if you can use it without paying for the GPS rental? I have no idea since I always use my own!
After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.
