Hi Alain,

A group of friends and I are heading out at the end of October for a trip very similar to yours.

Do you know if Erta Ale is active again?

Best,

Laurent

Hi Alain,

I just read your really interesting travel journal. Thanks for the link! 🙂 We’re planning a very similar route next February for 15 days as well. We’ll start in Lalibela and finish in Mekele. It turns out we’ll be staying at the same hotel as you in Lalibela and in the Tigray region. I have a quick question about your trek in the Simien Mountains. Was it the classic 3-day trek (Sankaber, Geech, Imet Gogo, Chenek) or just day hikes?

Hi there My guide friend just told me there’s been a slight improvement over the last two weeks, but it’s still not great Have a good trip!

Thanks so much for this feedback! We’ll also be doing day hikes in the Simien Mountains—hopefully two of them. Which area did you explore for your hike?

Hi Alain, I just discovered your blog today through your travel journal on Ethiopia. What an amazing country! I was able to expand my knowledge of this place, which we visited in January 2011, though we didn’t get to see Gondar or Lalibela (but we did make it to Erta Ale). It was great reliving the parts of our itineraries that overlapped.

Then I took a peek at your blog on IRAN, which we visited in October 2018. Your route helped me see the eastern part of the country, where we hadn’t been. Thanks for sharing these travel experiences.

If you’re interested, these two countries (and others) are covered in more or less detailed travel journals on our site enviedevoyage.com. Just click on my name in my signature. Best regards, Philippe

Hi Alain, Thanks for your account and for sharing! I’m heading there in 2 weeks :) Quick technical question: for Dallol and Erta Ale, do you need good hiking shoes—I’m torn between low-cut and high-cut ones. Do you have any thoughts or advice to share? And about Ethiopian Airlines, did it seem like a good airline from your experience? I’m starting to have some doubts… I might switch to another airline. Ethiopian’s customer service is particularly awful… Thanks a lot!

Hi, I’ve just finished a short article with my notes, photos, impressions, and feelings about the 2 weeks I spent visiting Ethiopia: Abyssinia, Erta Ale, Dallol. You can read it at the link below:

Happy reading and safe travels!

Hi there! For Dallol and Erta Ale, we wore low shoes. It's really hot, the night climb too—you walk on black lava flows, so make sure to bring good lighting. But be careful, because it's hard to see black on black in the dark, though the surface is solid with grip.

About Ethiopian Airlines, I'm surprised—they used to be well-ranked. For us, the service was good. We took Ethiopian again to go to Namibia. Now they're in 23rd place.

Safe travels, happy hikes, and I’m looking forward to your return info! ;)

Thanks so much for the details! I was wondering if low-cut boots would be enough, given all this terrain that’s tough on our feet :-) Thanks also for the airline rankings. I’m shocked to see Turkish Airlines at the bottom (ahead of Ryanair, no less!!!) when, having flown with them a lot, I think they’re an excellent airline. I’ll be happy to give you a debrief when I get back 😉 Thanks again!
