For architecture and history, in Belém you have the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery. In the same area, don’t miss the MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology)—it’s a pretty unique building.

For contemporary architecture, head to Parque das Nações.

I recommend getting the *Cartoville Lisbon*—it’s a small but very practical and useful guide. I also refer you to the discussion I linked above.

Maybe you love Street Art? If so, you can plan a really fun day around that theme. Don’t miss the works of Bordalo II, a Lisbon-born artist. His animals are made entirely from trash (I love his work). His "Raccoon" in Belém, near Lisbon, is stunning. In Lisbon itself, you can also see a piece by Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra, a star of urban art. If you love music, catch a fado concert. Opt for smaller, less touristy venues. And most importantly, stay until the end—until the "jam session," that’s the best part.

Vhils is another Portuguese street art star. Last week, *Courrier International* released a special issue in collaboration with Vhils, featuring an interview, articles on street art around the world, and photos of some of Vhils’ works. This issue might still be available for sale.

I wasn’t familiar with this artist. I really like their work—I find the project interesting and the result is truly beautiful. I’m curious to see a fresco in person rather than just in photos. Thanks! 😊.

Vhils is an interesting artist with a rather unique technique—he doesn’t paint walls, he destroys them with a chisel or jackhammer to then "carve" his portraits.

It’s true that in Lisbon, you see fewer works by Vhils than by Bordalo II. In the Alfama district, there’s one of his pieces, a very famous one: Amália Rodrigues, on the ground, but it’s a mosaic, not his usual technique.

I’d seen several of his works in Quinta do Mocho, a tough neighborhood in the Lisbon suburbs where you could see around a hundred painted building walls. There was also a piece by Bordalo II, but unfortunately, these murals were recently removed. It’s a shame because they were really beautiful—in my opinion, it was the best place to see street art in Lisbon. You can find photos online.

I’ve seen other works by Vhils elsewhere in Portugal, like in Porto.

Vhils owns the Underdogs Gallery in the Marvila district. It’s a tiny gallery showcasing urban artists’ works—worth visiting if you have time.

In the same neighborhood, several building walls were painted during a street art festival. You’ll find, for example, the portrait of Brazilian indigenous leader Raoni, a piece by Kobra. Near the bus stop, there’s a mural by the well-known Spanish artist Okuda, along with other beautiful works. As of February 2025, they were still there.

This district is also home to the Fábrica Braço de Prata, a former munitions factory now blending a café, urban art, and a bookstore. They sometimes host concerts.

The bus to Marvila passes by the Azulejo Museum, which is worth a visit.

But street art is pretty much everywhere in Lisbon—urban art lovers will be in heaven!

I saw Amalia, I even took a photo of her. I hadn’t made the connection. 😉 Kobra, magnificent. I love his work. The Azulejos Museum, yes, definitely. It’s a really beautiful place. Make a little stop at the very relaxing café.
