Which park for a 3-day safari in Kenya?

Hi there,

I’m reaching out with a question about which park to choose for a 3-day safari in Kenya.

After 20 days in Uganda, I’m meeting up with my dad for a 3-day safari (that works for him). We’ll be meeting in Nairobi and have a full day to travel to a park (preferably the farthest from Nairobi to avoid crowds?) and spend 4 nights there before heading back to the capital for our flight to France.

I’d love to hear your recommendations since I’ve read so many great tips on this forum.

Hi David, With only 3 days of safari (and 4 nights on-site), I’d avoid trying to go too far north or to parks that require a lot of driving. You risk spending a good chunk of your time in the car. In your shoes, I’d look at:

Amboseli if your dad dreams of grand landscapes with Kilimanjaro in the background. The elephants there are incredible, and the park is perfect for a short stay of a few days.

Tsavo East if you’re looking for a wilder vibe and vast spaces. I found the atmosphere there very different—less "postcard-perfect" but very authentic, with a great variety of animals.

The Masai Mara is obviously exceptional, but depending on the time of year, it can be much more crowded. If your goal is also to enjoy some peace and quiet, Amboseli or Tsavo East seem like great compromises. PS: There’s also Nairobi National Park, which is really not bad and has the advantage of being close by. If you have time, a day of Safari in Nairobi is also an option.

Given this itinerary, I recommend the two reserves of Samburu and Buffalo Springs north of Nairobi. It takes a full half-day to travel from or to Nairobi. You can easily move between the two reserves by crossing a river. Sometimes there are more animals on one side or the other. If your goal is to "get away from the crowds," avoid the Maasai Mara and Amboseli.

The wildest, least visited, and most affordable option is Meru NP (Kenya’s hidden gem). Stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife (it’s best to go with a guide who knows the park well). A real sense of being "alone in the world." From Nairobi, it takes about 7 hours to reach this park.







About 6 hours from Nairobi, you have three national reserves: Samburu, Buffalo Springs, and Shaba. More people have been visiting them since the Mara’s prices went up… but they’re still fantastic destinations. You can move between them, but entry fees are separate: Samburu on one side and Buffalo/Shaba on the other.







Also about 6 hours from Nairobi, Tsavo East sees a lot of tourists who stay on the coast and visit for a day or two. But if you venture off the main tracks, you can find peace—it’s a massive park.
