Weather in Sri Lanka between late April and early May

Hi, it's all in the title but I’ll clarify 😊

We want to do a few safaris, visit villages, the mountains, see tea plantations, etc. But we also want to see turtles. We love snorkeling but aren’t experts—we’re just happy to see colorful fish and coral. We’ve always wanted to see turtles too, so the idea is still to see *something* underwater 😊

Can you tell us which regions to prioritize and which to avoid given the climate at this time of year? Thanks a million!

Hi, My answer is mainly focused on snorkeling. You can never be sure about the weather at a specific time, especially these days with climate change... We can only rely on statistics (which you can find all over the internet). My experience in Sri Lanka goes way back, but if I’m answering, it’s because I spent a full month there spanning April and May, just like you. I was lucky enough to have good weather everywhere, with only a few short evening showers. That doesn’t guarantee what you’ll find, though. What we can say about the climate is that the west and south coasts have their good season from December to March, and the monsoon (rainy season) runs from May to October. April is a transition period. On the east coast, the good season is from May to September.

So, in theory, April is an in-between period on both sides of the island. For snorkeling, I personally preferred the east coast with its calmer waters. The west coast had a lot of swell! And swimming was dangerous on the beaches, which are better suited for surfing. In the south (I didn’t go everywhere!), there were a few decent beaches, but I’d still prioritize the east coast between Batticaloa and Trincomalee. I remember one spot where, at the time, spearfishing was allowed everywhere in Sri Lanka (I had a mini spear gun), and there were tons of fish, beautiful coral, and calm seas (in May). You could get there by boat pretty quickly from Nilaveli (a beautiful beach near Trincomalee): it’s Pigeon Island. There’s also the lagoon in Batticaloa... PS: There were turtles at Pigeon Island back then, but I don’t know if they’re still there now.

Nothing’s certain, so we’ll see how lucky we get once we’re there! 😊

Our first plan was to go back to Thailand, but after thinking it over, we wanted to combine Khao Sok with Chiang Mai. Unfortunately, it’ll be burning season 😢—it’s really not recommended to visit Chiang Mai at that time, so we’ll save it for another trip. 😊

So we’re leaning toward Sri Lanka!

Not really. In Sri Lanka, there are two monsoons, and the most significant one is the southwest monsoon, which affects the west coast and the south coast. The one that hits the east coast is less significant.
