After visiting southern Sumatra in 2020 (Padang area, Bukkitinggi, Lake Maninjau), we’re heading north in two weeks to explore.
We’ll arrive in Medan after Singapore.
Then we plan to go to Bukit Lawang, Berastagi, and Lake Toba before finishing up on Pulau Weh.
Yeah, I know three weeks is short, but we like taking our time now that we’re in our fifties 😄.
My questions:
- Which direction should we do the loop: Medan → Bukit Lawang → Lake Toba → Medan (we’ll be traveling by taxi)?
- Can I buy the Medan/Banda Aceh flights just 10 days in advance while we’re there? Any airline to prefer?

Une ile fabuleuse, à découvrir d'urgence ! Une population d'une extrème gentillesse. Des fleurs partout, des paysages magnifiques et des villages superbes.
Seule déception : la visite de l'ile de Rinca pour voir les fameux varans... Bof bof bof !!!
Nous avons fait la traversée de Florès avec guide et chauffeur . Notre guide Thomas Zumat (+62 821 4773 5075) (komodotrails@gmail.com) a été formidable et je le recommande vivement. J'avais trouvé ses coordonnées sur VoyageForum et je remercie ceux qui me l'ont fait connaitre. Thomas parle bien anglais (qqs mots de français). Il a un caractère doux et sérieux. Toujours de bonne humeur il adore blaguer et sourire et sait se rendre discret quand il le faut. Il connait parfaitement son sujet et adore partager son savoir. Thomas était accompagné de Linus, chauffeur expérimenté et prudent, ce qui est très rassurant quand on aborde les petites routes de montagne... Linus parle également un anglais correct, ce qui permet d'avoir aussi un contact sympathique avec lui. Ces deux là ont bien sur énormément contribué à la réussite de notre voyage. A Labuan Bajo, Nicolas nous a également déniché un très bon bateau pour notre excursion dans l'archipel, à un prix très inférieur à tout ce que nous avions vu sur place.
A propos du SunRice Homestay à Ruteng : La guesthouse en soi n'a rien d'exceptionnelle. Elle est cependant d'une propreté irréprochable. Elle se compose de 4 ou 5 chambres ,2 wc et 2 douches. Les repas et Pdj se prennent sur la terrasse. Ce qui est vraiment exceptionnel ici, c'est le Maitre des lieux ; Jeff le boss qui vous accueille comme si vous étiez un cousin éloigné qui vient lui rendre visite. On se sent très vite " à la maison" et Jeff sait mettre à l'aise ses invités et créer rapidement un climat chaleureux . La nourriture est excellente. Le petit déjeuner est compris dans le prix de la chambre et le diner est "offert" (Vous donnez ce que vous voulez) . Jeff propose à ses invités de l'accompagner à 5h du mat pour une randonnée de 2 heures dans de magnifiques rizières afin d'assister au lever su soleil. Cette option facturée 40 000 Idr (2,50 €) est à ne rater sous aucun pretexte !!! La gentillesse de Jeff restera un de nos plus beaux souvenirs de notre voyage.

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...

It’s such a pleasure to be back on VoyageForum after so many years. A long time ago, I used it to plan and share a wonderful trip between Namibia and Botswana.
This time, I’m preparing a family trip for next summer (two parents, a 15-year-old boy, and an 11-year-old girl) that’ll be our big Christmas gift. I already have the flight tickets: we arrive in Denpasar on July 13th and return from Singapore on August 12th.
Our main focus is Indonesia, but since we don’t often get the chance to travel this far, I wanted to take the opportunity to stop in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore on the way back. It’ll give my kids—especially my son, who’s passionate about geography—a taste of these two major cities.
We prefer quiet spots (no need for party vibes or trendy places), though the girls (yes, there are two of them!) still enjoy discovering local crafts, souvenir shops, and the like. We don’t mind organizing things ourselves—I actually love doing that—and I assumed it’d be easy to arrange transport between hotels by booking through them. We’re not chasing cultural discoveries (one beautiful temple is enough; no need to see all 35, even if they’re stunning).
After reading tons of websites, guides, and forum posts, I’ve put together an itinerary I’d love to get your thoughts on. It’s already changed many times… and I’m sure it’ll change again! The goal is to avoid obvious mistakes, see if we’re trying to do too much, or if some places aren’t worth the effort. Here’s what it looks like so far:
- **Day 1**: Arrival in Denpasar in the late afternoon. Transport to a hotel outside Denpasar.
- **Days 2–5 (4 days)**: Bali. We’d like to stay in one or two quiet spots, away from the southern area, to explore the famous rice terraces, temples, and maybe do some light hiking.
- **Day 6**: Transfer to Lombok by fast ferry from Padang Bai (to avoid going back to the busy southern port, since I’ve heard traffic there is chaotic).
- **Days 6–11 (5 days)**: Lombok. We’d especially like to climb Mount Rinjani (we’re in good enough shape for it) and spend 2–3 days in a nice, quiet seaside spot (I was thinking of the southern Gilis near Lembar or the beautiful beaches in the south of the island).
- **Day 11**: Flight from Lombok Airport to Labuan Bajo.
- **Days 12–14**: 3-day/2-night cruise to Rinca and the various "hot spots" of Komodo National Park.
- **Day 15**: Labuan Bajo. I was thinking of doing a beginner’s diving excursion.
- **Day 16**: Flight back to Denpasar, then transfer to Banyuwangi by bus/boat (apparently possible via Express Bahari).
- **Day 17**: Morning visit to Ijen Crater, then return to the same hotel to relax for the rest of the day.
- **Day 18**: Transfer to a base camp for a sunrise visit to Mount Bromo on Day 19. - **Day 19**: Visit Bromo. We’d like to spend the whole day there to enjoy the site once most people have left. - **Day 20**: Transfer to Surabaya or Yogyakarta. - **Day 21**: Flight to Medan, then transfer to Bukit Lawang. - **Days 22–25**: Bukit Lawang. Jungle trek for 2–3 days and some downtime for 1–2 days. - **Day 23**: Transfer to Dumai. - **Day 25**: Boat from Dumai to Malacca.
The rest isn’t as relevant here.
I have a few big doubts, especially: - Is it worth spending 4 days in Bali and 5 in Lombok, or would it be better to focus on just one island? If so, we’d probably lean toward Lombok—it seems quieter, and Rinjani is calling our name…
- I’m counting on the Komodo trip to explore the islands and marine life in the area. It sounds like a true paradise (manta rays, turtles, Komodo dragons…). From what I’ve read, snorkeling in Bali or Lombok doesn’t offer the same experiences. Do you think that’s really the case? I’ve seen some unflattering comments about Labuan Bajo… Originally, I wanted to do the Lombok–Flores crossing by boat, but the "mandatory" whale shark stop in Sumbawa seems controversial, so I ruled it out.
- For the stretch between Days 16 and 21, I’m not sure about the best way to organize things to enjoy Ijen and Bromo without being in constant rush mode or sleeping for just 3 days. I can’t decide whether to stay near the crater (the hotels seem basic—is it worth spending 2 nights there?) or farther away, even if it means more travel. I’ve also considered skipping Bromo to attempt the Semeru climb. There are also some nice spice plantations nearby (Margo Utomo in Kalibaru). Any thoughts?

Pour ceux qui ne sont pas au courant, organiser son séjour aux raja Ampat en indépendant est devenu tout bonnement impossible depuis quelques semaines!
En effet le site phare qui donnait toutes les infos et les contacts des différentes Guest house du coin (Stayrajaampat.com) vient d'anonymiser les contacts des proprios et se transformer tout bonnement en une plateforme de réservation!
Ils motivent leur décision en évoquant le bien être des locaux et leur désarroi devant les réservation non honorées par les voyageurs : Grosso mode, le voyageur choisissait une guest house, appelait ou envoyait un sms au proprio pour reserver mais des fois ne se présentait pas, donc perte sèche pour la Guest house! Maintenant en passant par la plateforme de résa, on choisit, on reserve et on paie direct dans la foulée avec bine entendu une commission versée a Stay raja Ampat!!
certes ce site a ete une bouffée d'oxygene pour les voyageurs voulant se rendre dans le coin et eventuellement pour le différents locaux qui se sont lancées dans le tourism mais en grattant un peu (forum anglophone) il s'avere que c'est une site detenu exclusivement par des occidentaux basés a Bali et Singapour!!
Ce changement sonne definitivement le glas pour les voyageurs indépendants et surtout pour les guest houses lointaines type Manyaifun, Selpele ou encore Gam ouest qui intéressaient presqu exclusivement ce genre de voyageur qui ne reserve pas..au contraire des visiteurs qui viennent aux raja Ampat pour une semaine ou dix jours sans visiter le reste du pays (comme cela se faisait avant) et qussi au profit des GH les plus populaires sur KRI ou sud de GAM qui sont deja bien installés et souvent la propriete des elites locales, donc pas besoin de revenus touristiques!
Les raja Apat se transforment doucement en une destination de luxe apres une petite fenetre democratique: les frais du permis, le transport jusqu a Sorong puis les transferts vers les GH puis encore le cout sur place augmente de la nouvelle commission du site et enfin les prix des activités....ca fait bcp!
Juste pour info et aussi pour exprimer un peu mon desaccord ....il reste cependant des milliers d 'autres iles dans le pays qui valent autant ou mieux et ou on peut vivre une experience totale a moindre frais

Bali hors des sentiers battus, c’est possible ?
Un “Bali autrement”, authentique : on en rêve..! Mais il ne faut pas se le cacher, l’île des dieux est convoitée. Étant adepte des grands espaces et du “hors sentiers battus”, Bali nous a fait hésiter. Et sur place, on a effectivement été confronté à une urbanisation galopante, aux foules de touristes, aux rabatteurs, aux enseignes tapageuses, aux boutiques de grandes marques et d’autres choses que l’on préfère fuir ! Alors sortir des sentiers battus quand on va à Bali est très difficile. Malgré cela, on te donne quelques idées, anecdotes et conseils pour vivre un Bali autrement, un Bali authentique, un Bali hors des sentiers battus. Et au final, cette île nous a offert une belle dose d’aventures et sincérité. On ne pouvait pas louper ça ! Ah, ça t’intéresse ? On a quelques secrets à te livrer. Is it possible to book tickets directly on Indonesian airline websites (I get the feeling that when connecting from France, access is blocked...)
Also, are there direct flights from Maumere or Ende back to Jakarta for the return trip, or do I have to go back through Labuan Bajo?

J'ai pour projet de partir 3 semaines avec un groupe d'ami sur une Île inhabité au mois de SEPTEMBRE 2020. Idéalement vis à vis de la saison, l’Indonésie, la Malaisie, les philippines paraissent être les endroits idéaux (saison & nombre d'île confondu).
Si je devais résumer vulgairement notre projet, il s’agirait de nous faire déposer en bateau sur une île inhabité avec nos ressources (eau, nourriture, tente & équipement indispensable a la survie) pour 3 semaines d'aventure, puis a la fin de cette période, le bateau reviendrait nous chercher pour nous ramener à la civilisation. C'est un rêves d'enfance que nous souhaitons réaliser ensemble en étant totalement conscient de la difficulté de ce projet un peu fou. Nous ne sommes pas débutant dans le domaine & la galère est notre recherche commune hihi.
Nos questions sont les suivantes : Est-il possible de faire du camping sauvage sur ces îles inhabités ? La population/gouvernement est-elle/il contre ce type de voyageur ? Quels sont les législations ? ...

I’m planning to go for 3 or 4 weeks in July-August and looking for a sunny destination that’s not too expensive (flights + cost of living), with varied points of interest. About fifteen years ago, I had planned a trip to the Togian Islands, but it didn’t happen, so I’m revisiting this destination (Sulawesi, Toraja country) + maybe others? Given that in Indonesia, I’ve already done volcanoes in Java, Bali, part of Lombok, and the Gili Islands. The issue is that I’ve read some posts about the plastic waste problems around the Togians, and it seems like they’re not the paradise islands they once were.
So, I have a few questions: I’d love to hear recent feedback from travelers who’ve been to the Togians to get an objective opinion (?) or if you’d recommend other paradise-like islands in Indonesia (not overcrowded).
If you confirm that it’s still an exceptional destination, what did you pair it with? The Moluccas and which islands in particular? Or Flores/Komodo? For my part, I don’t scuba dive—just snorkeling.
Finally, if you have other dream-island destinations (affordable and sunny), I’m all ears.

Nous avons pour projet de partir 3 mois en avril, mai et juin avec nos deux enfants qui auront 6 ans et 3 ans.
C'est encore un "projet" et nous bloquons vraiment sur l'itinéraire (qui me parait essentiel pour dessiner ce projet).
Pensez-vous que ce soit simple de faire Philippines > Malaisie > Indonésie ? (ordre le plus logique par rapport aux saisons)

En juillet 2019 j'ai visité Bali en famille (couple + 2 garçons de 8 et 10 ans). C'était formidable, je ne vais pas écrire un long carnet car il y en a déjà de très nombreux très beaux sur cette île mais je partage mon circuit et qlq infos pouvant être utiles aux futurs voyageurs à Bali. N'hésitez pas si vous avez des questions!
Itinéraire : J1 : Denpasar-Sanur (1h) J2 à 4 : Nusa Lembongan J5 : trajet de Nusa Lembongan à Keliki, super village au Nord d'Ubud où on peut loger chez l'habitant et où certains parlent français. (voir "Keliki painting school") En route visite de Goa Gajah+ un autre temple. Courte balade dans les rizières de Keliki. J6 : prévu grande balade dans les rizières mais fortes pluies :( remplacé par Ubud Monkey Forest J7 : Route de Keliki à Munduk avec en route visite du temple Batukau, des rizières de Jatiluwih et du temple de Bedugul J8 et 9 : Munduk: balades jungle, lac, cascades... J10 à 12 : Amed plage et snorkeling J13 : trajet Amed-Ubud avec visites Tirta Ganga Water Palace et palais Kertha Gosa J14 à 19 : Ubud visites des environs : balades rizières à pied (dont une jusqu'à Keliki), Tirta Empul et Gunung Kawi, journée à vélo en petit groupe (10 pers) avec "Happy bike tour", musée des masques à Mas.... départ le dernier jour au soir.
Des idées de budget : - Vols Amsterdam-Denpasar Emirates avec une escale : 620 euros/pers, acheté en janvier. Départ le 27/6 - logement à chaque fois 2 chambres, parfois communicantes. En moyenne 68 euros/nuit pour 4 mais en fait très variable car on a alterné le simple (20 euros/nuit) , le "moyen" et on s'est une fois offert le luxe (140 euros/nuit). On a toujours prévu avec clim mais ça a rarement été utile, il ne faisait pas trop chaud. Pour économiser sur ce poste, on aurait pu prendre des chambres triples et un enfant loge dans le lit double, souvent bien grand, avec ses parents (comme les balinais). Mais comme on aime bien bien dormir pour être en forme la journée, on n'a pas fait ce choix. - repas dans des restos, environ 7-8 euros/personne pour plat +boisson+parfois dessert. On aurait pu économiser en buvant moins de Bintang :-) On n'a pas vu beaucoup de possibilités de manger en rue (contrairement à d'autres pays d'Asie).
Les coups de coeur : - les rizières à pied, surtout près de Keliki - loger chez l'habitant - Amed, plage de sable noir et snorkeling avec les tortues - des balinais super accueillants - la région de Munduk - les prix généralement annoncés sont assez juste, il ne faut pas beaucoup marchander, sauf bien sûr au marché à Ubud - le confort de se déplacer en voiture avec chauffeur
On a moins aimé : - Ubud centre bondé de monde, même de piétons ! (en juillet) - les embouteillages autour d'Ubud qui finalement nous on fait renoncer à l'une ou l'autre visite pourtant pas loin - plusieurs fois des soucis de compréhension sur les chambres réservées. Typiquement on avait réservé 2 chambres voisines et on nous donnait 2 chambres à des étages différents. Pas bien grave mais quand on arrive fatigué après un long trajet... - ne pas pouvoir aller dans la mer à Nusa Lembongan car il y avait du vent qui faisait de trop grosses vagues (on a pu y aller uniquement depuis un bateau lors d'une excursion snorkeling). heureusement notre hôtel avait une piscine !

Les billets d'avion pour la Malaisie sont réservés pour l'été prochain. Départ en famille (nos fils auront 11 et 12 ans) pendant 4,5 semaines à partir du 24 juin.
Nous sommes allés en Indonésie cet été (la rédaction de la suite du carnet est en cours 😎) et nous avions adoré la visite de ce pays. Avec le recul, même si nous ne regrettons rien de notre programme, quelques jours supplémentaires de détente auraient été appréciés.
Par conséquent, j'envisage de commencer notre voyage par quelques jours dans les îles (histoire de se poser après une année de collège pour nos fils et de travail pour nous - option snorkeling indispensable !) et également à la fin de nos vacances (cette année, nous avons fini nos vacances par un trek dans la jungle à Sumatra ; alors souvenir extraordinaire avec des images plein les yeux, mais "un peu" fatiguant tout de même 😉). Mon mari, consulté de temps à autre pour l'organisation 😛, souhaiterait même ajouter une étape îles/snorkeling au milieu de nos vacances !
Longue introduction pour vous soumettre mes premières réflexions et solliciter vos avis : - je pense que nous irons aux Perenthian et aux Tioman, ça nous aidera à nous faire un avis sans refaire deux fois le même endroit 🙂 - je serais bien allée à Kapas mais je lis des avis très divergents sur la durée à y prévoir (je pense consacrer trois jours à chaque séjour insulaire - je réfléchis à aller à Pulau Weh au nord de Sumatra (vol de 3 heures jusqu'à Banda Aceh depuis Kuala Lumpur + ferry). Nous y serions volontiers allés l'été dernier mais nous n'avions pas suffisamment de temps - j'exclus Langkawi en raison de la mousson prévisible à cette période-là de l'année
Des avis sur les îles ? Un classement en terme de fonds marins ? Nous sommes allés à Komodo l'été dernier, autant dire que la barre est haute 😉
Petite précision : nous visiterons uniquement la péninsule, réservant la découverte de Borneo à une autre fois

We’re planning our trip for next summer, which will be based in Komodo, then Alor, and back to Bali to catch our international flight. To secure that flight, we’re planning to spend our last two full days (actually 3 nights) in Bali.
We’ve already visited Bali twice—first time 30 years ago and the second time 12 years ago—and we don’t want to revisit the must-see spots (and definitely not Ubud; I had a bit of a shock there 12 years ago).
What could you recommend for activities and hotel locations? We’re looking for fairly exclusive experiences, not too physically demanding since we’re not as young as we used to be. We’re big fans of good food and beautiful landscapes. Can we find a driver/guide for these two days?

J'ai beaucoup suivi ce forum et ses membres formidables, merci beaucoup à vous pour tous vos retours d'expériences et propositions, c'est grâce à vous que j'ai visité beaucoup de lieux en Indonésie. Je suis un féru d'Indonésie depuis 2012 je souhaite organiser un trip de 3 semaines moyennement rythmé en transports avec mon meilleur pote.
J'ai déjà visité West Java (Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Kawah Putih et campagnes environnantes ) - Central Java (Yogja, Temples Hindous), Bali et ses Nusa, Lombok et ses Gili, Komodo, West Timur, Sumatra (Padang, Medan, Banda Aceh, Pulau Weh) et les Togean (Sulawesi). Il faudrait donc exclure ces endroits.
Je suis preneur de tout itinéraire sympa (en dehors de ce que j'ai déjà fait) voici notre style de voyage :
Bon rythme mais pas trop effrené non plus, l'avion est toujours privilégié. Pour le confort moyen +, faut que ce soit propre c'est tout. Diving Snorkeling, 1 Jungle Trek , lieux culturels (s'ils existent), 1 ou 2 villes sympa max, 1 volcan à faire
Voici ma proposition de parcours je reste à votre écoute pour toute remarques :
Semaine 1 :
Arrivée Manado ( 2 jours de repos et visite ville) après c'est le flou conseillez-vous Tangkoko pour un beau trek en jungle et voir les primates ? Par rapport aux îles on veut éviter Bunaken, que recommandez-vous entre Bangka, Talisei et Lembeh pour seulement 2/3 jours ? (Diving, Plages de qualité, un peu de vie ?)
Semaine 2 :
Hésitation entre une semaine dans la région d'Ambon et 1 semaine dans la région de Ternate. Pour ceux qui l'ont fait que recommandez-vous de faire en 1 semaine dans l'un de ces coins ?
Semaine 3 :

J'ai beaucoup suivi ce forum et ses membres formidables, merci beaucoup à vous pour tous vos retours d'expériences et propositions, c'est grâce à vous que j'ai visité beaucoup de lieux en Indonésie. Je suis un féru d'Indonésie depuis 2012 je souhaite organiser un trip de 3 semaines moyennement rythmé en transports avec mon meilleur pote.
J'ai déjà visité West Java (Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Kawah Putih et campagnes environnantes ) - Central Java (Yogja, Temples Hindous), Bali et ses Nusa, Lombok et ses Gili, Komodo, West Timur, Sumatra (Padang, Medan, Banda Aceh, Pulau Weh) et les Togean (Sulawesi). Il faudrait donc exclure ces endroits.
Je suis preneur de tout itinéraire sympa (en dehors de ce que j'ai déjà fait) voici notre style de voyage :
Bon rythme mais pas trop effrené non plus, l'avion est toujours privilégié. Pour le confort moyen +, faut que ce soit propre c'est tout. Diving Snorkeling, 1 Jungle Trek , lieux culturels (s'ils existent), 1 ou 2 villes sympa max, 1 volcan à faire
Voici ma proposition de parcours je reste à votre écoute pour toute remarques :
Semaine 1 :
Arrivée Manado ( 2 jours de repos et visite ville) après c'est le flou conseillez-vous Tangkoko pour un beau trek en jungle et voir les primates ? Par rapport aux îles on veut éviter Bunaken, que recommandez-vous entre Bangka, Talisei et Lembeh pour seulement 2/3 jours ? (Diving, Plages de qualité, un peu de vie ?)
Semaine 2 :
Hésitation entre une semaine dans la région d'Ambon et 1 semaine dans la région de Ternate. Pour ceux qui l'ont fait que recommandez-vous de faire en 1 semaine dans l'un de ces coins ?

I’m planning a 15-day trip to Flores in October. I’m coming from Bali, which I know well, as well as Lombok and Sulawesi, but it’s my first time in Flores.
I’d love to hear about your experiences—what should I see? How long should I stay at each stop?
I travel at a relaxed pace and won’t be renting a scooter. I enjoy walking, exploring, and taking it easy—not just lounging on beaches. For some trips, I can hire a driver and car if public transport is complicated.

We (a couple) are heading to Indonesia from July 9th to August 15th (I already know some spots).

We land in Jkt on the 9th (follow-up question: where to stay? We saw the Wonderloft for 20 €—does that seem reasonable? I used to pay way less a long time ago).
We’d like to leave for Borobudur on the 10th in the mid-afternoon (question 2: train or VIP bus—we’ll have just landed—nighttime or not?).
Next question: any chill but nice places to stay in Borobudur, Yogyakarta, and Solo? We’re thinking one full day in Borobudur, then Yogyakarta (1 day), then Solo (1 day). Does that work time-wise without rushing?
After that, we’re heading toward the volcanoes (I always mix them up… any tips?) and crossing over to Bali (2 days?). If I’m calculating right, we’ll be in Java from the 9th to the 18th—does that sound okay to you? Or too much? I’m struggling to estimate how long temples and volcanoes take to visit.
Bali: I used to stay around Seminyak or Canggu. What’s the best place to stay now without breaking the bank? Somewhere not overrun by Australian surfers or hipster restaurants? I’m leaving in July for 24 days, followed by 2 weeks around Makassar/Wakatobi for work. For the first part, I’m traveling with my family (my partner + 3 kids aged 6 to 14).
I’ve had a long-time dream of Komodo, but I’m worried it’s become super touristy... though the crossing to Maumere still sounds amazing. I’m also not thrilled about all the internal flights.
On the other hand, since I’ll be in Sulawesi anyway, I’m thinking a crossing from Gorontalo to Luwuk via the Togians (maybe even a few days in Banggai) + a detour to Toraja (which I visited 10 years ago) could be an incredible trip too.
For my family, this is their first trip to Indonesia, so I’d love it to feel *mythic* ;).
Any advice is welcome—I’m really struggling to decide! I know it’s a choice between two great options...

I initially planned to spend 3 nights in Senaru to explore the surrounding area (village, waterfalls, etc.—but no volcano trek) for 2 days and then take a day trip by scooter to discover Sembalun (mainly the Bukit Selong viewpoint) before returning to sleep in Senaru. After that, I’d head to Kuta Lombok.

In early July, we’re heading to Indonesia for a solid three weeks as a family (my partner and I are in our fifties, and we have two daughters aged 17 and 20). We’ll be arriving and departing from Denpasar. Our itinerary is still entirely up in the air, and we’d like to explore islands other than Bali (we’ve already been there a few years ago).
I’d love to gather your tips and great recommendations to help us plan our route. For now, we’re thinking of visiting Lombok, Flores, and the Komodo archipelago. Here are some of our questions: - I visited Lombok myself back in 1999. I loved it, but I’ve been reading very mixed reviews in recent travel journals. Some are as enthusiastic as I was back then, while others are much more lukewarm (due to the overly strict and visible influence of the island’s governor on the population and because of massive hotel projects—I’m not sure if they’re on hold, underway, or completed). What’s the current situation? Is Lombok still a must-visit? And do you have any tips (hotels, places to visit, health, etc.)? - Still on Lombok, I did the Rinjani trek back then. I remember the hike wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t as tough as what I’ve read in quite a few recent travel journals... My partner and I are in decent shape, but that’s about it, and especially, my partner and our two daughters really don’t like the cold. What’s your experience with this trek? And do you have a trekking agency to recommend? (If we do it, I think we’d want to make sure we have good support, including quality gear, tents, jackets, etc.) - Flores and Komodo would be a completely new experience for all of us. Any tips and recommendations are welcome (sightseeing, accommodations, transport, etc.)! In particular, we’d like to explore the Komodo archipelago with a trusted agency that will take the time to show us the archipelago’s treasures in good conditions (safety and "decent" comfort). We’ll have three weeks on the ground... and we like to mix sightseeing with downtime where we just enjoy the moment. So we’re not looking for an overly packed itinerary, but still something rich (no point traveling so far just to lie on a sunbed all day ;-))

Nous aurions besoin de conseils avisés pour l'organisation d'un voyage de 4 semaines en Indonésie ; nous avions prévu de partir grosso modo de mi-mai à mi-juin, pour bénéficier d'un climat favorable, sans être en haute saison (nos billets du vol international ne sont pas encore achetés). Or il se trouve que le ramadan cette année se termine le 23 mai d'où de gros doutes sur la façon de planifier au mieux ce voyage : commencer par Bali terminer par Yogyakarta ???
Nous avons visité plusieurs pays d'Asie mais il agirait de notre premier voyage en Indonésie ; aussi nous voudrions découvrir un maximum (mais pas à un rythme effréné). Le pays étant si vaste, nous sommes un peu perdus dans les choix qu'il nous faut faire. Nos priorités serait : Bali, Sulawesi (surtout pour le pays des Toraja), Florès. Komodo car nous aimerions voir des dragons de Komodo (si possible sans faire une croisière de plusieurs jours car nous avons lu que le logement sur ces bateaux était vraiment sommaire ou alors très coûteux) mt Bromo... et les sites autour de Yogyakarta.
Petites précisions : nous sommes un couple de seniors habitués à voyager en indépendants, mais de façon confortable, aimant autant les sites culturels que la nature. Seul mon mari pratique un peu de snorkeling.
