I’m looking for a beach spot within 3 hours max of Bangkok for the end of my trip (January). I know full well I won’t find that postcard-perfect vibe of the more remote islands! But I don’t have a choice. If you’ve got any ideas... no high-rises, obviously not Pattaya, somewhere quiet, swimming possible, a hotel right on the beach (and not too dirty, the beach itself!) I’ve looked at hotels around Ko Samet or, across from it, on the mainland. I spotted the Bann Pae Cabana. But nothing really exciting on either side. New ideas welcome! 🙂

Hi there, I need your thoughts on the rest of my itinerary. We’re spending two nights in Phnom Penh and five in Siem Reap. That leaves us with six days, and we’d like to do Kampot-Kep and Koh Rong Sanloem. Originally, I wanted to go to Battambang, but I’m worried it might be too much. Hi everyone, We’re heading to Thailand from February 3rd to 24th, as a couple (37 years old). We love local cuisine, street food, small restaurants, and quiet bars for a drink in the evening. We’re also big fans of turquoise waters and white sand beaches. Our planned itinerary looks like this:

Chiang Mai: 4 or 5 days to rediscover the city, temples, and markets. We already visited the Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces a few years ago and loved it, so we’re heading back for a few days there :)

Bangkok: 3 days, with a day trip to Ayutthaya.

Then heading down to Trat province to enjoy the islands of Koh Chang, Koh Mak, and Koh Kood.

We’ve read that the southern islands (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Phangan, Koh Lipe, etc.) are often packed this time of year, so we’re looking for quieter islands but with some accommodations and restaurants/bars. For reference, we really enjoyed Koh Rong Samloem, Koh Rong, Phu Quoc, and the Philippine islands. 👍 Does this itinerary fit well with what we’re looking for? Or do you have other suggestions for routes or islands to prioritize during this period? Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello, I’m starting to plan my adventure in Cambodia. I’ve read a lot of your posts and really appreciate all your articles. Now it’s my turn to share my plans with you: 12/01 arrival in PP 13/01 arrival in SR where I’ll meet up with 2 friends for 6 days exploring the temples and surrounding areas 19/01 I’ll leave and finish the trip solo. I fly back on 29/01 at 8 PM, so I’ve got 10 days for a little immersion. The dilemma is whether to: # head to Battambang, then make my way to PP, Kampot, and 2 nights by the sea # go to Kratie and head down to Kampot with 2 nights by the sea (or, to cut down on kilometers, go via Kampong Cham to Kampot). Option 2 is my preference. I’m almost 70 and not too keen on rushing 😅 Thanks in advance for your time and any helpful tips! Françoise

Hi there, I’d love to hear about your experiences getting back from Koh Rong to Phnom Penh. I saw that by plane it takes 3h30 with a layover in Siem Reap, so no thanks—I was thinking of taking the bus. How much time should I allow between leaving Koh Rong Island by ferry and then the bus, so I can plan my return to France? Or is a taxi an option? Thanks for your tips!

We’re planning to visit Phnom Penh, Battambang, Siem Reap, the Angkor temples, Kompong Luong, then head down to Kampot, Kep, and finish our trip on the islands of Koh Rong. Has anyone done this trip recently? Any great spots to recommend? Neighborhoods to stay in Phnom Penh (lively but not too touristy)? Idea for a 15-day itinerary in Cambodia... - 3 nights in Phnom Penh, arriving at 6:30 PM. (2 days to explore the city). - 2 nights in Battambang - 4 or 5 nights in Siem Reap (2 days for Angkor, 1 day for Kulen, 1 day for Tonlé Sap Lake) - 2 nights in Kampot - 2 nights on Koh Rong. Hi everyone! I’ve booked flights to Phnom Penh for August 26 (no layover in the Emirates as a precaution...). We arrive on Sunday, August 2 in the morning and leave on August 19 around 9 PM (also from Phnom Penh). We’re a couple traveling with three kids aged 9 to 16. Among the many questions I have about our itinerary, a few are standing out: If we arrive in Phnom Penh exhausted, I imagine we’ll need to stay one night there before heading to Siem Reap... but how much time should we spend there to enjoy Angkor in good conditions? Then, Mondulkiri or Battambang? (Because I don’t want it to be a total rush, changing accommodation every two days and praying that bus transfers or private drivers go as planned...). Where does Tonlé Sap Lake fit into all this? And if we end with a beach stay: is Koh Rong a must, or is there another spot? Also, what about the return logistics: should we spend the night before our flight in Phnom Penh to be safe... or do we do everything on August 19... like taking a boat and then the road from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh, risking missing our flight if anything goes wrong? Anyway, a huge thank you in advance for your valuable tips and feedback!

Hi everyone, We’re planning to return to Cambodia in July 2026, as a family, for the third time. Since we’ve already visited Siem Reap and Battambang, we’re not considering going back this time. Instead, we’d like to travel more slowly and take the time to settle in. We’re thinking of an itinerary around Mondulkiri, Kampot, and Koh Kong (Tatai waterfalls, mangroves, etc.). For those who know the Koh Kong province and Mondulkiri well: are these areas still accessible and enjoyable during the rainy season? We’d also like to spend 2 or 3 days on an island, but we’re not sure if it’s really feasible at this time of year (sea conditions, boat crossings…). If it’s doable, which one would you recommend? We’re planning to spend only a short time in Phnom Penh, then a few days with family near Koh Thom. So, my flight tickets have just been booked for a trip to Cambodia from November 4th to 27th, 2025. I’ll be traveling solo and want to explore this amazing country while getting a bit off the beaten path. I’m arriving in Phnom Penh and also departing from Phnom Penh. My goal is to travel as much as possible by bus and scooter. What itinerary would you recommend? What are the must-do things? I’m open to all tips and info. Hi everyone, we’ll be in Thailand from August 2nd to 21st, arriving in Bangkok on the 2nd for a visit. From the 5th to the 8th: Angkor temples. Then, starting on the 9th, we’re planning to head to Chiang Mai, and by the 14th or 15th, we’d like to be on an island until the 19th, when we return to Bangkok. Five days in Chiang Mai seems a bit long to us. What do you recommend between the 9th and 15th, and which island? We’re not big fans of sunbathing—we’d love to snorkel and explore the island. Ideally, I’d have liked to find a house to rent, but every time, I end up with places far from the beach, whereas we’d really like to be able to walk to the beach for strolls. By the way, are there a lot of shells? Can we collect them? It seems that in August, swimming can sometimes be tricky due to tides—is that true? Thanks to all the contributors! 😊

So happy to see that VoyageForum is back up! We're planning a trip to Thailand in October 2025. We're looking for quiet islands with nature/jungle, beaches, and pretty villages (no party scene!). We'll be traveling with our 5-year-old son. I've done some research and found a few islands that seem to fit our criteria. We're torn between the islands on the Gulf side (Koh Chang, Koh Mak, Koh Kood) and the Andaman Sea islands (Koh Yao Noi, Koh Yao Yai). What are your tips? Any area to prefer in October? I’m planning my trip for July–August 2025. After Bangkok and the Chiang Mai area, we’re heading to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. I read on Le Routard that the water level is low during this period. On Koh Phangan, I’d like to stay on the west/northwest side of the island (Koh Ma? Haad Khom?) Could you let me know what the water level is like there? Will we be able to swim during this period? Hi there, During our Thailand trip, we're planning to arrive in Bangkok and then head up to Chiang Mai. So far, so good. But after that, we'd like to go to the islands—either Krabi or Koh Samui. However, the flights listed on 12go.asia seem complicated, with a layover of about 1 hour in Bangkok where we'd have to collect our luggage and check in for the second flight. That feels way too tight.
