We're currently in Thailand. I'm opening this thread to share practical info for those planning their trip. As for impressions and feelings—I love it, but I'll let everyone form their own opinions. The goal here is more about: how to do this or that, how to get there, etc.

After a lot of searching, exchanging ideas, and thinking it over, I’ve decided to go back to my original plan of spending two weeks in Bangkok. From January 19th to February 2nd. I’ll also take a quick trip for one night/two days to Ayutthaya (and return to Bangkok, where I’ll have kept the apartment I booked), and possibly the same for Kanchanaburi, depending on how I feel once I’m there—whether I find something more interesting in Bangkok or nearby.
The key word is: taking my time to take photos, observe, taste, savor (in every sense of the word), and most importantly, not rushing.
Beyond the must-see tourist spots, I’d love to wander around the city and maybe within a 40 to 50 km radius for a day trip to discover unusual and lesser-known streets, houses, temples, markets, gardens, and more.
I’ll also be spending two weeks in Chiang Mai and two weeks in Nan.
I’m open to any suggestions. Thank you so much!

I’m heading to Thailand for the first time in early 2026 and I’m really struggling to pick a neighborhood to stay in Bangkok. Apart from being close to public transport (metro, skytrain, BRT), I’m torn between several areas. I don’t mind using public transport or walking long distances, but if every trip takes 45 minutes or an hour, it’ll quickly become a hassle given our relatively short time there.
We’ll be in Bangkok twice during our trip: first for a “short” 2-night stopover (arriving from France in the mid-afternoon, then leaving the day after next for southern Thailand by plane), and then again for 3 nights before flying back to France (arriving at the airport in the late afternoon, 3 nights there, then departing for France in the late morning).
I’ve seen so many different recommendations that I’m having a hard time deciding. I’ve read that staying near the river is great for sightseeing, and that taking the boat to get around is really pleasant. But I’m worried about being a bit isolated for evening outings (eating at a cheap little restaurant, having a drink—nothing too wild!).
Chinatown is tempting for the food—it looks amazing—and it doesn’t seem too far from the main sights with public transport. But I’ve read that it’s very noisy because it’s super touristy and there’s constant truck traffic. My friend isn’t thrilled about it, especially since another neighborhood interests her because she has a great discount at a hotel near Victory Monument/Phaya Thai (the Pullman hotel). Even though it’s close to public transport, I’ve seen that it’s mostly a shopping district? And even with transport, isn’t it a long trip to visit places like the Grand Palace?
We also had a plan to stay at an ibis near BTS Nana station in the Sukhumvit area, but again, I get the feeling it’s mostly a shopping district?
Anyway, I’d love to hear your thoughts because I’m really torn!

I have a question about the Rome2Rio app. Can you set it up to show routes using the BTS and MRT (for Bangkok) instead of buses or taxis? For example, I’d like to know how long the trip from Chong Nonsi to Bang Khun Non will take, but the app doesn’t suggest the MRT or BTS, even though it’s totally doable. Any tips on how to fix this?

Quand vous désirez vous déplacer dans Bangkok, que ce soit pour visiter ou pour des rendez vous professionnels, vous allez devoir faire face à de nombreuses contraintes et dangers.
- Pour commencer, les distances et la chaleur : les distances entre deux rues ou deux sites peuvent sembler minimes sur un plan mais sont parfois gigantesques dans la mégapole siamoise. Sans parler de la cohue de certaines rues ou encore des espaces non ombragés. De quoi arriver en nage et exténué à votre destination.
- Ensuite il y a le problème des arnaques : vous optez pour un tuktuk ou un taxi et bonjou r la galère si vous tombez sur un chauffeur peu honnête qui vous balade, ne met pas le compteur et demande un prix excessif. Sans parler des embouteillages qui sont légions et qui vous font perdre un temps considérable.
- Nous avons également les motos taxis : Personnellement je ne les prends qu’en dernier recours, j’ai serré les fesses plus d’une fois. Vous êtes à la merci d’un chauffeur qui prend souvent des risques inconsidérés et vous êtes le seul à ne pas porter de casque. Notez également que nombre de compagnies d’assurances ne vous prennent pas en charge, en cas d’accident, dès lors que vous étiez passager d’une moto taxi.
Alors, dans la mesure du possible, pourquoi ne pas opter pour un déplacement via la BTS de Bangkok ? Pas d’embouteillage, prix affichés, espaces conditionnés, propreté et sécurité, de nombreuses rames, des boutiques et nombre de correspondances pour vous mener dans les principaux sites de la mégapole. D’ailleurs, à ce propos, si vous connaissez des lieux intéressants situés à proximité d’une station de BTS, n’hésitez pas à partager l’information en commentaire.

Nous avons eu de bonnes expériences avec les tailleurs à Bangkok. Lors de notre prochaine visite, nous voulons faire coudre des rideaux. Existe-t-il une bonne adresse pour les achats de tissus bon marché? Qui connaît une bonne source pour l´achat de soie sauvage? Merci d´avance pour vos conseils.

We’ll be moving around: Bangkok (3 nights), Ayutthaya (1 night), Chiang Mai (4 nights), Koh Samui (4 nights), and Koh Phangan (3 nights). I’m still wondering where to stay in Bangkok for this last night in Thailand. Initially, I thought about booking a hotel near the international airport, but I figured there might not be much to do there... maybe we’ll want one last crowd-filled night at a food market? So, I considered booking a hotel near the metro instead, for easy access to the airport the next morning, while still being central enough to go out for our last evening before heading back to France.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this :-) And if you lean toward the second option, which neighborhood/hotel would you recommend?

- Can you choose the denominations at exchange bureaus/ATMs? How do you avoid ending up with only 1000-baht notes when exchanging large sums? - If not, is there an easy way to get change? Any alternatives to buying stuff at 7-Eleven? - Can you buy train tickets from Thonburi to Kanchanaburi in advance? Is there usually space available, considering some people do the Death Railway day trip from Bangkok to Sai Yok Noi? - Is there room for luggage on the trains to Kanchanaburi? We’ll be traveling as a group of four with two large checked-baggage-sized suitcases (25 kg each). - Kanchanaburi: Most day tours allow around 3 hours at Erawan Falls. Is that enough, or is it worth spending the whole day there, especially at the start of the rainy season when it’s a bit greener? - In Sam Roi Yot, are there taxis/Grab/Bolt available for exploring the surrounding areas? I’d appreciate any numbers or addresses. - Does True (7-Eleven) have good coverage across Thailand, from Sam Roi Yot to Chiang Rai, or should we go with AIS? - In Bangkok, if you need to switch BTS lines, do you need a new ticket, or can you change lines as long as you don’t exit the station?

Nous sommes en famille donc pas un quartier pour la fiesta. Facile d'accès des 2 aéroports car on arrive à suvarnabhumi et on repart de don muang le lendemain.

J'ai déjà fait pas mal de malls (MBK, Terminal 21, Siam...) et les marchés de Chatuchak, Patrunam, Lat mayon.... Pour cette nouvelle excursion, je voudrais trouver de beaux objects de déco (pas forcément des oeuvres d'arts) typiques et à des prix corrects. Auriez-vous des adresses de boutiques à Bangkok ?

Hi, we arrive in Bangkok Thursday around noon and take the overnight train to Chiang Mai (Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station-Chiang Mai). Since Chatuchak Market isn’t far from the station, we’re planning to spend the afternoon there—but how do we get there from the airport?

Apres un Séjour à Bangkok j envisage d aller me poser sur la côte face aux îles ko kood et ko chang. Je dois donc me rendre à trat en bus.
J ai deux questions :
Dois je réserver mon trajet à l avance ou puis je me rendre à ekkamai bus station et prendre un ticket en dernière minute. Je voudrais rouler en bus VIP et non en van.
Dois je prévoir une place complémentaire pour une valise comme je le vois sur certains forums ?

Mais je ne trouve rien dans le budget souhaité sur les sites de réservation. Je me demande donc si quelqu'un connait des guesthouses non répertoriées dans cette zone ?
- budget 600 bahts maxi (en mars ou avril) ; - fan room avec fenêtre ; - salle de bain et toilettes dans la chambre ; - wi-fi (pas de dortoir, pas de salle de bain commune)

J'atterris le 3 mars à l'aéroport de Phuket, et souhaite aller directement à Khao Sok :)
Je me suis renseigné sur le forum, il existe "boss cheaper than taxi" mais ils me demandent 2000 baht... pas si cheap que ça.
Du coup, même si ça me prend le double (4H) je me tâte pour les transports en commun. Mais je ne sais pas comment choper le bus direction Khao Sok depuis Phuket aéroport.
