Hi everyone,
We're a family of five: two adults and our three kids (18, 17, and 13 years old).
We’ve just bought our flight tickets for Vietnam from August 6th to 26th, 2025.
We know it’s not the best month to explore Vietnam, but we don’t have a choice—our vacation is in August! We’ll pack ponchos ;-)
I’ve read a lot of blogs online, but I’d love your advice, please:
Here’s the itinerary we’re considering:
We’ll arrive in Hanoi (2-3 days), and if the weather allows, we’d like to head to Sapa to discover the landscapes, rice terraces, and mountains... (2 days). We’re not planning to book anything (train, hotel, etc.) because we’ll decide based on the weather whether to include this stop or not. Do you think it’s doable to not book anything in Sapa for a family of five?
After that, we’re planning to explore Lan Ha Bay and the surrounding areas, Ninh Binh... (4-5 days). I’d love your tips for exploring this area because I’ve read so much that I’m a little overwhelmed...
Ideally, we’ll then head down to Hue and Hoi An. We’ll enjoy a few days at the beach (4-5 days).
Then Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta (3-4 days).
What do you think of this plan for 21 days?
If you know any great spots, guides, etc., I’m all ears! Especially for Lan Ha Bay and the surrounding areas, as well as the Mekong Delta. And of course, any great tips you’d like to share.
There’s info scattered around the forums, but I’m struggling to find recent updates.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and thanks to those who help us prepare for this trip!
Happy travels to you all ;-)

Hi there,
My name’s Stéphane, and due to a last-minute change, I’m looking for one or more companions to join me on a trip through several countries (Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia).
The full trip runs from early October 2025, with a return to France in early January 2026—about 87 days total, CDG-SGN <==> SGN-CDG.
You can split the trip into multiple legs depending on your availability.
The itinerary is set up as a big loop, starting in Vietnam, then northern Laos, Thailand, southern Laos, and Cambodia from north to south before heading back to Ho Chi Minh City to fly home.
Depending on your schedule, there are a few possible starting points:
- Early October: Ho Chi Minh City, - Around October 20: Hanoi, - Early November: Vientiane/Luang Prabang, - November 15: Bangkok, - Early December: Siem Reap, ...
You can return whenever works best for you.
Excluding round-trip flights to/from France (or elsewhere in Asia), the average daily budget is 25 €, covering accommodation and bus transfers.
Looking forward to chatting more, sharing details, meeting up, and traveling together for an amazing adventure!

Hi there,
I’m planning a 15-day trip to Vietnam from December 15th to December 31st.
There’ll be 6 adults and one little one who’s 18 months old.
Would you recommend staying in the North or trying to cover both the North and South?
We prefer nature and areas that aren’t too touristy.
Any great tips?
Thanks for your help!
I’d like to book the flight tickets soon, and I’m not sure if it’s better to change airports for the arrival and return.
Thanks! 😊
Hello and happy to be back on this forum!
We’re planning our trip to southern Vietnam in February. We visited central Vietnam two years ago. For now, based on reading various posts, we’ve drafted the following itinerary, keeping in mind that we travel by public transport and rent bikes or motorbikes when needed. We also like to take our time!
So far, we’ve only booked our flight tickets:
1 Paris – HO CHI MINH
2 & 3 Visit HO CHI MINH
4 Day trip to Cu Chi
5 Transfer Ho Chi Minh / Cat Tien
6 & 7 Cat Tien
8 Transfer Cat Tien / Cai Be
9 & 10 Cai Be
11 Transfer Cai Be / Vinh Long or Binh Island
12 Vinh Long or Binh Island
13 Day trip to Sa Dec
14 Bus transfer Vinh Long / Can Tho
15 & 16 Can Tho
17 Transfer Can Tho / Chau Doc
18 & 19 Chau Doc
20 Transfer Chau Doc / Ha Tien
21 & 22 Ha Tien
23 Boat transfer to PHU QUOC
24, 25 & 26 PHU QUOC
27 Flight to Paris
Actually, we’re on a rhythm of 1 transfer day and 2 visit days, which doesn’t fully satisfy us. That’s why we’re wondering: Is it possible to stay in one accommodation for visits to Cai Be, Binh Island, and Vinh Long (including our day trip to Sa Dec)? Do you see any other ways to adjust the itinerary? Any oversights? We also still need to look into the transfer details. Thanks for your tips! fg

Hi there,
We’re heading to Vietnam as a family on July 8th for a little over 3 weeks (north and center). We’ve only booked the first 3 nights in Hanoi, and nothing else after that. We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. What do the experts here think? And which website can we use to book the tickets? Thanks in advance for your tips!
Hi there, looking for an independent, dynamic travel companion.
Heading to Vietnam in March 2026 for 3 weeks.
Let’s chat... See you soon!

Hello everyone,
we’re planning a trip to Vietnam at the end of June 2026 for at least two weeks.
Our goal is to avoid rushing around too much and take our time, focusing on nature, hiking, and getting to know the locals.
Here’s my first draft itinerary:
Arrival and departure from Hanoi
Sapa and its surrounding area
Tam Coc – the "land Halong Bay"
and Ninh Binh...
Halong Bay (maritime)
Cat Ba Island...
I’d love to hear your thoughts, advice, and feedback.
Looking forward to reading your replies.

Hello,
I’m planning and organizing a wonderful trip to Vietnam from mid-March to mid-April 2026, traveling independently for a month with my wife to enjoy her new retirement. Here’s a summary of our itinerary: We arrive in Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of Wednesday, March 18, and depart from Hanoi on the evening of Thursday, April 16. First, I’d like to head to Ho Chi Minh City because the temperatures are high in that region in mid-March. After that, we’ll visit Phu Quoc Island and then the Mekong Delta. We’ll return to Ho Chi Minh City and take a flight to Hue for 2 days, then Tam Coc / Ninh Binh (2-3 days), and Cat Ba Island with a visit to Lan Ha Bay (4 days). We’ll spend a few days in Hanoi, followed by 3-4 days in Sapa with some hikes, and then the Ha Giang loop (4 days). (I’m a motorcyclist—I ride a BMW trail bike and have taken care of renewing my international license.) We’re considering renting a motorcycle or bicycles when needed, except in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The weather in northern Vietnam in early April should theoretically be decent. Finally, we’ll return to Hanoi before heading back to Paris and the Pays de la Loire. Unfortunately, I’m skipping Angkor in Cambodia. I’d like to have a guide for 1 or 2 days in Sapa (which typical agency would you recommend?), and I’m wondering if I should book an agency for the 4 days in Ha Giang. I prefer my independence and don’t really like the "group" aspect of agencies. I’ll rent a 150cc motorcycle, and my wife will ride with me. Other questions: What are some good, typical accommodations to book in the places we’ve identified? Thanks for any info. Did I forget anything, or should we adjust our itinerary? Thanks for your help and advice. Pimarguibou

Hi there,
We’re a family of bike-travelers. Our long journey came to a halt in March 2020 in Ho Chi Minh City due to Covid. We’d been on the road for 8 months—2 in Thailand, 1 in Cambodia, and 1 in Vietnam (from the Mekong Delta up to Ho Chi Minh, where we got stopped). We’re heading back to Vietnam in July-August for 5 weeks to finish what we couldn’t in 2020 (introducing my kids to the country of my roots). We’d originally planned to backpack, figuring it’d be tough to cover the country by bike in such a short time... But the urge to pedal is strong for both parents and kids alike.
We’re thinking of keeping 10 days to explore the North by backpack (since the elevation changes are steep) and saving 3 solid weeks for biking—but we’re not sure where (ideally with minimal elevation gain). We’d love to return to Tam Coc (we visited in 2009 without the kids, thanks to Larsay’s great tips—still so grateful for all the valuable advice!). Logistically, we shipped our bikes 5 years ago, but that seems less doable now. We’re considering either renting (though 5 bikes for 3 weeks would get pricey fast) or buying locally to resell or donate afterward.
Is biking in August unrealistic? Thanks in advance for your insights! !
