3-Month Visa for Madagascar
Hi there,
We’re planning our trip and want to spend 3 MONTHS in Madagascar, but we’re getting really conflicting info about visas.
Apparently, it’s not possible to get one at the airport.
We contacted the consulate in Marseille… and they don’t know either.
The phone number for the embassy in Paris is no longer in service…
Anyway… help!
If anyone’s gotten a 3-month visa, could you shed some light on this for us?
Thanks so much.
Inviting a Malagasy friend to France
Hi,
I want to invite a Malagasy friend and I’m surprised to learn there are procedures (that seem complicated) to follow…
It would be a short stay (max 3 months).
She’s got her passport, I’m paying for the flight ticket, and I read that I need to get an accommodation certificate from my town hall—but what else is required after that? What other documents are needed? What are the processing times?
I’m really disappointed that in 2026, it’s still such a hassle for this kind of thing.

Ivato scanner for domestic flights - stolen SD cards
Hi! Recently, the domestic-flight terminal at Ivato has been moved to the old "international" airport, complete with its own scanner. On October 13th, I checked my luggage (which I had inspected before leaving my hotel in Tana) for a flight to Sambava. It wasn’t until I arrived at my accommodation in Antalaha and opened it that I discovered it had been searched (normal before boarding a plane), but to my surprise, the case containing my GPS fishfinder had been opened—likely mistaken for a laptop due to the scanner’s open access to all kinds of theft—and three SD cards were stolen. Luckily, two of the SD cards had their micro SDs inserted into the device, so I still had the Navionics micro card (300 €) essential for fishing. Of course, I’m not asking for compensation, just urging caution with checked luggage on "domestic" flights. (This is a copy-paste of my post on *Le Routard*.)
Does the exchange office at Ivato buy ariary?
Hi there! I have to leave Ivato/Antananarivo on December 16th. I have a lot of ariary that I’d like to exchange for euros since I might not be coming back to Madagascar (after this 21st trip). I think the exchange office at Ivato also buys ariary back. If any of you have seen the rate for this buyback in advance, thanks a million!
Political situation and travel
Hi everyone.
We’ve been feeling like there’s a big drop in activity on our forum...
Probably due to the current situation... Have any of you canceled or postponed your upcoming trips?
The forum is also facing competition from social media like Facebook and others, which play a big role in the political situation but are pretty limited when it comes to planning an individual trip.
The mandatory ads for new members on the forum are also a major turn-off that should be removed.
As for the current situation, I’m in Nosy Be, and there’s no problem here. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the future. I feel like this crisis is different this time and could lead to real change. Hope I’m not wrong!

One Month in Northern Madagascar - Thoughts on My Potential Itinerary
Hey everyone!
I’d like to explore the northeast of Madagascar, using bush taxis, boats, and my own two feet.
I already have an ideal itinerary in mind, but I’d love to know if it’s doable at a relaxed pace in one month. The goal, of course, is to avoid being constantly focused on time and days and to travel spontaneously.
I’m aware that the roads are rough and there are a lot of unexpected delays, which isn’t a problem in itself. I just struggle to estimate the *time* it takes to get between stops.
Potential itinerary:
Tana – Sainte Marie Island (4 days) – Maroantsetra (3 days) – Masoala Park (8-day trek?) – Antalaha – Marojejy Park (3 days) – Ambilobe – Nosy Be (5 days) – Tana
The days listed are just rough averages. Cities don’t interest me, and I don’t plan to visit Tana.
I’d really appreciate any info or tips from you all! 😊
Thanks in advance,
Romain

Diego to Cap Masoala and beyond by bike
Hi everyone,
After a break of a few years, I’m heading back to Madagascar this October. I’d like to travel from Diego to Maroantsetra via Cap Masoala as much as possible by bike—it’s my favorite way to travel. My questions: for the return trip to Diego once I’m in Maroantsetra, is there a possibility to take a flight, since the road option only starts much further south than Tamatave? Or where can I rent or buy a decent bike between Diego and Cap Masoala? For this bike trip, I’m open to any info—I love traveling rough. Someone might even want to join me on this adventure.
After that, I’d also like info on the northeast part (Mozambique Channel side) of Diego, which I’d like to explore by bike as well.
Thanks, and feel free to share any tips—just skip the paternalistic safety advice. Laurent

Malagasy visa: cost and procedure
Hey Fellow Travelers,
I was caught off guard when the Malagasy consulate in Scandinavia informed me they don’t issue entry visas for Madagascar—what’s the point of a consulate, I wonder! They advised me to apply at the Malagasy embassy in London. So, I started filling out the online form, but the price for the visa made me do a double-take: nearly 200 €!
But apparently, you can also get it on arrival! Has anyone tried this before? I’d love to know if the process takes a long time (I’ll be landing in Nosy Be, exhausted after nearly 15 hours of travel), what the cost is, and—since corruption isn’t just a word—whether you absolutely have to grease the palm of the official(s). This is because I almost took the next flight back when I arrived in a country I won’t name. Even though all my documents were in order—passport, visa, vaccinations, hotel reservation—the immigration officer initially refused to stamp my passport. I later found out I was supposed to slip at least $10 into the document when presenting it... Thanks! /d

Currency Exchange in Tana and ATMs
Hi fellow travelers,
Can you tell me if it's possible to exchange money at Ivato or if it's better to do it at banks in Tana?
Which banks are the most "reliable"?
Regarding ATMs, what's the maximum amount you can withdraw in one go?
Thanks for your tips!
How to get from Antalaha to Maroantsetra?
hi there
I’ll be in Antalaha in October and need to get to Maroantsetra. I’ve heard it’s possible by boat, but I can’t find any info about it. So I’m wondering if I’ll have to arrange something with local fishing boats or something else, and whether it’s a risky trip since the sea can get rough on Madagascar’s east coast. Has anyone done this before, or just know anything about it? What do you think?

Payments and withdrawals in Madagascar
Hi everyone,
We’re heading to Madagascar for a month at the end of June with the family. Our itinerary takes us to the East: Tana, Andasibe, Pangalanes, Tamatave, Mahambo, Sainte Marie; then up North to Sambava, Vohemar, and finishing in Diego Suarez.
One question that’s been on our minds a lot is about money and payments. We’ve seen some discussions on this forum, but they didn’t answer all our questions.
We have two Visa credit cards from two different banks. The banks are aware of our trip and shouldn’t block the cards. One card is from the Caisse d’Épargne, which has international options that avoid fees. We’ll likely use this card as our primary, and the second one will be a backup (since the fees are higher for that one).
We’ve heard that few shops and hotels accept card payments—is that accurate?
Several hotels seem to accept wire transfers to a Euro account, as some have asked for a deposit that way. The exchange rate offered is often poor, though (e.g., 1 € = 4,500 Ar)—is this negotiable?
Of course, we’ll bring some Euros in cash to exchange, but we don’t want to carry too much money on us. If we exchange Euros at a bank, is the wait long?
Once the cash runs out, we’ll need to withdraw from ATMs, but we’ve heard it can be a challenge—ATMs max out at 400,000 Ar, and the wait at the counter can be very long if we need more. Have you observed the same?
Is there also a way to pay using smartphone apps? Someone mentioned TapTap Send or Sendwave, and I’ve also seen the Orange Money app. Is one or more of these options reliable and widely used? I imagine this could be useful for many payments and help avoid burning through the cash we withdraw too quickly.
Are we missing any other practical solutions?
Thanks for your help! Julien

Ferry from Madagascar to Réunion and Réunion to Mauritius
Hi everyone, I’m heading to Madagascar in December 2025 and I’d like to know the one-way fare without checked baggage—just cabin luggage—from Tamatave/Toamasina to Saint-Denis on Réunion Island, please. Also, how many days a week are there connections, and how long does the trip take? Thanks!
I’d also like to know about the route between Réunion Island and Mauritius: where does it depart from, how much does it cost, and on which days are there connections? Thanks in advance!
Best regards,

Where can I find currency exchange offices in Madagascar?
Hi,
Can you tell me if it's possible to exchange money in cities other than the capital or some domestic airports, and should I prioritize banks or exchange shops?
Thanks in advance
Currency exchange at Nosy Be
Hi,
We're heading to Madagascar in just over a month. Our flight arrives at Nosy Be, and I was wondering if there are any currency exchange offices at that airport since it doesn’t seem very big?
I’d like to exchange 500 € for incidentals (souvenirs, vanilla purchases, etc.). Our hotel is already paid for (half-board) as well as the excursions. What do you think? Thanks for your help!
Buying vanilla in Nosy Be (Madagascar)
Hi there,
I’m heading to Madagascar for 15 days next March, specifically to Nosy Be, and I’d like to buy some vanilla. Where can I buy it in Nosy Be, and what’s the current price of vanilla? I’ve heard that the price of vanilla has skyrocketed (like everything else, to be honest). If anyone has bought some recently, that would be a huge help.
Thanks in advance!
Airlines for Madagascar
It’s been over 10 years since I last went to Madagascar. Back then, I flew Corsair from Paris.
I’m planning to go back in September 2025.
I’ve heard about Air Austral...
Air France: the issue is the flight arrives in the evening at Ivato.
What do you recommend?
Which airlines fly from Paris to Tana?
Thanks for the help!
