First trip to Morocco: what to see and do?
by AlbertV · 2024-11-08 · 10 replies
Hi there, We're interested in urbanism, architecture, Arab-Muslim culture, and the daily life of locals... A rough idea: Fez and Meknes. A good plan? Maybe too touristy? We prefer off-the-beaten-path destinations (we’ve traveled to Iran, for example). What else is there to see in the region? We’re open to any suggestions. Thanks for your tips!
Moroccan/French friend looking to marry an Algerian woman
by Madame67 · 2024-10-30 · 4 replies
Hi there,

Hopefully I can find some answers here!

Our best friend, who is Moroccan/French, wants to marry an Algerian woman. They’ve already met, and the first steps have been taken. It seems like getting married under these circumstances is really complicated—has anyone been in a similar situation and could share some advice on the administrative side or the steps to take?

Thanks!
Are VPNs really secure on smartphones?
by Voyageuse13 · 2024-10-30 · 4 replies
Hi there,

I have CyberGhost VPN on my tablet, which I only use for watching TV shows/series abroad. I’d like to install this VPN on my smartphone (to avoid bringing my tablet along), but my phone has several apps I use often.

My question: Are VPNs (including CyberGhost) actually secure on smartphones? I’m worried someone might sneak off with some of my data here and there...

Thanks
Passport not stamped when leaving Thailand
by Babykyi · 2024-10-28 · 37 replies
Hi there, I just got back to France and realized I don’t have a stamp in my French passport. Is it normal that at Suvarnabhumi Airport customs didn’t stamp my passport? I’m really worried because I have to go back in a month and I don’t know what to expect when I arrive at Thai customs. I’m afraid of the consequences, like a fine or worse—being blacklisted from entering Thailand. Has anyone else had this happen? And if it’s not normal, what can I do to avoid any problems?
Your itinerary ideas for 12 nights in Thailand
by Lionel06AM · 2024-10-28 · 17 replies
Hi everyone, I know my post might sound a bit repetitive with the questions asked regularly on this forum, but I’m feeling a little lost and thought I’d still ask for your help. Here’s my situation: I’m traveling to Thailand with my wife and 12-year-old son during the February 2025 school holidays. We’ll be spending 12 nights in the country. So far, I only have our flight tickets to and from Phuket. Now, I need to plan an itinerary that lets us discover beautiful places and the culture of this country. I’d like to stay by the sea, with stunning fine-sand beaches and breathtaking landscapes in areas that aren’t too urban, but also be able to see some beautiful monuments, typical villages, and wildlife not too far away. That said, I don’t want to be lost deep in the jungle either—I’d like a bit of atmosphere in the evenings (no nightclubs, but rather nice bars with music). I’ve done some research and here’s a first draft of what I might do:

Spend my first 3 nights in the suburbs of Phuket to explore the city and the province more broadly, Then head to Ko Yao Noi for 2 nights to discover the charms of Phang Nga Bay, Next, fly from Krabi to spend 4 nights on Koh Samui (maybe with a little excursion to Ko Pha Ngan?), Then fly back to Krabi to reach Koh Phi Phi for 2 nights, Finally, return to the Phuket area for my last night in Thailand to be close for my flight the next day.

The idea is to explore several places without having to pack and unpack every day, and to avoid spending hours on transport every day. What do you think? Do the places seem relevant? If so, does the number of nights seem appropriate? Thanks in advance for your help, Best regards, Lionel
Renovating a Peugeot 404 in France (purchased in Algeria)
by Chèoui · 2024-10-28 · 7 replies
Hi everyone,

As the owner of a Peugeot 404 in Algeria, I have the opportunity to renovate it in France. My question is whether, administratively, I’m allowed to take my car out in a rusty, worn state and bring it back in great condition—will customs, the technical service, or any other administration have an issue with that?

Thanks in advance for your feedback and insights. Have a great day
Transport from Battambang to Chanthaburi via the Ban Pakkad border crossing
by Philouppe · 2024-10-27 · 2 replies
Hi there,

We (5 adults and 1 child) want to travel from Battambang to Chanthaburi via the Ban Pakkad border crossing. I’d like to know what transport options are available (bus, taxi, songthaew). Are there any direct buses from Battambang to Pailin (I haven’t found any) or from the Thai border to Chanthaburi? If you know of any taxi companies that might cover these routes, I’d really appreciate the info.

Thanks in advance!
Issues renting a car with a French credit card in Bangkok
by Zimpala · 2024-10-26 · 14 replies
Hi, Has anyone else run into problems renting a car with a French credit card at Bangkok International Airport with international rental companies (like Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz)? These international car rental companies require a "credit card" to hold the deposit when picking up the vehicle. However, in several countries, French credit cards are considered "debit" cards rather than "credit" cards (even if "credit" is printed on your Visa bank card, for example). The rental agencies can't "block" the deposit with certain bank cards (though paying for the rental itself isn’t an issue), and they’ll refuse to give you the vehicle even if the rental was already paid during booking. I’ve already had this issue in several countries (Chile, Canada) with international rental companies that refused my bank card for holding the deposit, even though "credit" is clearly printed on my Visa Premier card. Has anyone encountered this problem in Bangkok? Thanks for your help! P.S.: I have a valid international driver’s permit, and I’ve searched the forum for answers about Thailand.
5 days on Easter Island
by Michael7759 · 2024-10-26 · 4 replies
Easter Island, located between Tahiti and Chile, fascinated me with its volcanic landscapes and legendary Moai statues, erected by the first Polynesian inhabitants to honor their ancestors. Mysterious and iconic, this isolated land intrigues with its history and the enigmas that researchers and explorers are still trying to unravel. To help you prepare for your trip, here’s my five-day itinerary. I was able to explore major sites while leaving room for some free and adventurous moments. Here’s the program I followed: Day 1: Discovering Hanga Roa and nearby moais For my arrival, I started slowly by visiting the village of Hanga Roa. I took the time to stroll around, check out some local shops, and especially admire the first moais accessible for free, to ease into the island’s fascinating history. Day 2: The must-see sites with a guide (Vaihu, Te Pito Kura, Anakena, Tongariki, Rano Raraku) The second day was dedicated to the highlights. With a guide, I explored the island’s iconic sites, including the imposing aligned moais of Tongariki and the ancient "statue factory" of Rano Raraku. This intense day helped me understand more about the island’s culture and mysterious history, especially with the paradise-like beach of Anakena at the end of the day. Day 3: Historical sites and museum (Orongo, Rano Kau, Puna Pau, Akivi) On the third day, I continued with a guided morning, particularly at the ceremonial village of Orongo, perched atop Rano Kau. After visiting Puna Pau and Akivi, I spent the afternoon at the museum to deepen my knowledge of the Rapa Nui civilization. Day 4: Bike ride in nature Craving freedom, I devoted this day to a bike ride along the coastline and through the island’s natural spots. It was the perfect opportunity to explore at my own pace and stop at secret coves, enjoying the tranquility of the landscapes. Day 5: Hike to the summit of Terevaka For my last day, I set off on a hike to the summit of Terevaka, the island’s highest point. From there, the 360° view of the island and the ocean is breathtaking and gave me a memorable souvenir of this trip. This five-day stay was a real journey through time, landscapes, and the mysteries of Easter Island! Ethiopia and Two Endemic Animals
by Rjulie95 · 2024-10-24 · 58 replies
The reopening of the forum is great news—let's keep it going! I’m going to share a little story about this 12-day trip, which was my second-to-last journey and my most recent one in Africa for now.

I went to this country for one very specific reason: to see two endemic animal species. A little suspense… you’ll find out what they are soon if you don’t already know!

The country is poor, very poor even. And it hits you even harder when you arrive in the capital: a massive open-air construction site that gives an impression of prosperity. A lot of roads were built by the Chinese, but to be honest, they’re far from perfect… and I mean *far*!

When it comes to restaurants, it’s pretty much the same story. Most offer endless menus, but in reality, there aren’t many choices. Once, I was flat-out told: “No rice today!” Ordering a dish? It’s a real gamble! The food is *very* spicy—I’m warning you, it’s intense! There’s chili in almost everything, so it’s best to ask beforehand if you don’t want your mouth on fire. Actually, this was the first time I didn’t like the food in a country I visited. Had to happen eventually, right?

Their national dish? Injera. A large flatbread topped with sauces, vegetables, and meat. The taste is really unique—some love it, others… not so much.

Hotel near the beach in Thailand
by Sebastoudu31 · 2024-10-24 · 4 replies
Hi there, My questions might be repetitive, but I’d love to find a hotel close to a beach where we can swim without having to travel too far. The teens would stay at the beach while we go on excursions.
Safety and travel in Burkina Faso
by Djembolito · 2024-10-23 · 7 replies
Hello everyone! From 2002 to 2017, I made 10 annual two-month trips to Burkina Faso, backpacking style—traveling solo (independent, self-sufficient, no agency) across the country. I happily mixed with the local population (neighborhoods, maquis, hostels, bush taxis...) and was always on the lookout for joyful, interesting exchanges. Back then, the country was peaceful, very welcoming, and any issues were always resolved with laughter, patience, and kindness!

In 2017, I was preparing to settle there for six months a year, like others do elsewhere... But in early 2018, I had an emergency medical airlift (a "welcome sign" from the skies, in hindsight—compared to what followed, the country’s negative and unpredictable evolution in recent years, plus the lasting COVID crisis...).

So, "while waiting for things to improve," I haven’t returned personally since 2018. Burkina Faso is still currently classified as a red zone ("strongly advised against for tourists") by our authorities. Though I’ve heard a few rare contradictory reports, what’s the *real* situation on the ground right now? Specifically: - General safety for Europeans - Security in the main cities - Road safety, intercity transport, and travel conditions

The current transitional president, Ibrahim Traoré, enforces strict censorship on communications (journalistic and digital networks) to the outside world... and RTB (Burkinabè television) is state-run... so...

Welcome to any fresh, recent updates from travelers or locals. Many thanks!
Trip to Algeria around Christmas
by Spousito · 2024-10-23 · 10 replies
Hello, My husband and I (retired) are planning to spend a few days in Algeria around Christmas. I know a visa is required and that the application must be made in person (hotel reservation, travel insurance certificate, proof of sufficient funds), and the collection too. A few questions: -Is getting the visa easy or "problematic"? -Any hotel, guide, or points of interest recommendations for Algiers, Oran, Constantine? Thanks in advance for all your answers, and long live Voyage-Forum! Laurence
8-day road trip starting from Agadir
by Ponturio · 2024-10-23 · 30 replies
Hi everyone! I’m heading to Morocco for a full 8 days in early November—it’s my first time visiting. I’m traveling solo and arrive in Agadir on Sunday at 10 PM. I plan to rent a car to get around. I’m reaching out to get your advice so I can plan my trip as well as possible... Here are my questions: 1 - Given my late arrival, is it better to stay overnight in Agadir for the first night? If so, do you have any hotel recommendations, and is transportation easy to arrange at that hour? 2 - Do you have any trusted rental car companies to recommend in Agadir? 3 - For 7 days, here’s the route I’ve planned: Agadir → Taroudant → Taliouine → Tafraoute → Tiznit → Agadir. Does this route seem good (not too short, not too long, any spots worth adding?), considering I enjoy driving? 4 - Should I book my accommodations in advance? Thanks in advance for your recommendations! I hope these questions aren’t too repetitive compared to what’s already been asked on the forum. Sébastien

Laos and Cambodia after the floods from January - February 2025

Does it seem feasible and reasonable to travel to Laos (or Cambodia) as early as January or February 2025? I don’t have any precise information about the damage these countries have suffered.
Weather in central and northern Vietnam in February-March
by Bernard33 · 2024-10-21 · 14 replies
Hi everyone, The topic has already been discussed, but it was about ten years ago (I haven’t seen any more recent replies). We’re planning to visit Vietnam for the first time from February 21 to March 7, 2025, most likely... We were thinking of exploring the central and northern regions. However, we’ve read a lot of conflicting things about the weather in the North, like Hanoi, at this time of year: “it’s quite nice, around 20-22°C” or “it’s cold, bring socks and a sweater.” But we were hoping to escape winter for a couple of months in a warm place... What do you think—those of you who live there or visit regularly? If it’s better to focus on the Central and Southern regions during these same dates, what shouldn’t we miss? Thanks in advance to the community! Best regards, Bernard
Flight tickets with Aegean via eDreams not refunded
by Amikima · 2024-10-20 · 7 replies
Hello fellow members,

Hope you're all doing well—it’s really great to see the site up and running again! Back in 2022, I booked a round-trip flight to Cairo/Paris via eDreams. The outbound was with Saudia: Cairo > Jeddah > Paris. The return was supposed to be in September 2022 with Aegean: Paris > Athens > Cairo. At the end of July, I got an email saying my flight was canceled by the airline. I immediately requested a refund, and they told me it would take 6 months to process. And since then—nothing. I’ve followed up with eDreams multiple times, but they just redirected me to Aegean, whose contact seems impossible to reach.

Do you have any leads or a contact address to follow up with them? Have any of you had similar experiences? Were you eventually refunded?

Amina
