Quality and comfort of overnight buses in Peru
Hi everyone,
We’re planning to explore Peru’s main highlights and were wondering if anyone could share insights on the quality and comfort of overnight buses. If so, which bus company should we trust?
Thanks for your replies and suggestions

Machu Picchu without an agency
Hello,
my wife and I will be in Cusco for a week in March 2027.
I’d like to organize the visit to the site on our own, combining the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.
We’d leave Cusco on Day 1 to arrive at the site in the morning, then stay in Aguas Calientes or Ollantaytambo, and on Day 2 return to Cusco while visiting the Sacred Valley.
Is this doable?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Cédric.
Review of Ventura Travel Agency for Uyuni
Hi everyone, does anyone know the agency Ventura Travel Agency (not ventura travel)? After lots of research and quotes, it’s the only one offering Uyuni at a reasonable price while meeting all the criteria: transfer to the border, private-room accommodation, and a very fair rate. Other agencies or guides either offer shared rooms, no border transfer, or prices that are way too high. But I’d love to hear some reviews about this agency. Thanks in advance!
Itinerary for a trip in northern Peru
Hi there,
After exploring southern Peru in 2024 with your help, we’d love to head north next. There’ll be 5 or 6 of us:
1. Arrive in Lima in the evening.
2. Visit Lima and take a flight at 6:35 PM to Tarapoto.
3, 4, 5. Spend a few days there to trek in a reserve (Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve) or somewhere else.
6. From Tarapoto to Chachapoyas—either by overnight bus, daytime bus, or private car.
7. In Chachapoyas: Gocta Waterfall, Sonche Canyon, and walk back to town.
8. Head to Kuelap citadel, Revash, and arrive in Leymebamba.
9. Leymebamba museum, then route to Cajamarca.
10. Cajamarca hot springs, overnight bus to Trujillo or Chiclayo—or do both.
11, 12, 13. Visit and explore the area.
14. Overnight bus back to Lima.
15. Lima.
16. Depart at 8 PM for France.
What do you think of this itinerary? Looking forward to your advice.
Thanks
Boats for visiting the islands of Lake Titicaca
Hi there,
I’m desperately looking for info on the schedules and routes of (shared) boats to visit the islands of Lake Titicaca.
From what I’ve found, there’s a *combi* (bus) that leaves from Puno to go to Llachon. Where do you catch it? What are the schedules and frequency? Does it take about 1 hour?
Then in Llachon, you can take a boat to Amantani (45 min). Same question—where do you check for frequency and schedule? After that, from Amantani, boats go to Taquile and then Uros. Do you have enough time to visit the islands between two boats? Frequency and schedule?
The goal is to do this tour independently (no agency) over 2 days. Thanks for any tips you might have!

Local trekking agencies in Peru and Bolivia
We're planning to trek in Peru and Bolivia and would love to find some local agencies.
If you know any, could you share details on prices and, of course, the names of the agencies?
Which trek would you recommend?

Transport and accommodations on the northern shore of Lake Titicaca
A few friends and I are planning to explore the northern shore of Lake Titicaca, making stops using local buses or collectivos. The route starts in Huancane, passes through places like Moho and Conima (on the Peruvian side), then crosses the border and continues into Bolivia via spots like Escoma, Ancoraines, Achacachi, and Huarina. I can’t find any info on transportation between these towns. It also seems there are no listed hotels or other types of accommodations.
Personally, I’ve already visited several places on the southern shore of the lake.
Questions: Is this less touristy route along the northern shore—compared to the southern route via Unguyo and Copacabana—worth it? Are there buses that cover the northern shore in both Peru and Bolivia? What accommodations do you know of along this route? Alternatively, is it possible to rent a car in Puno to circle the entire lake, and which reliable agencies would you recommend? Thanks for your suggestions! 😉

Uyuni Salt Flats with local guides
Hi there,
Three years ago during a trip to Java (no, I didn’t post in the wrong forum!), I came across the address of former miners who had switched to “tourism” and organized nighttime ascents of the Kawah Ijen volcano and descents into the crater.
So I was thinking—maybe there are miners on the salt flats too, either former or still active, who do the same thing. If you’ve had an experience like this, I’d love any tips you can share.
Thanks in advance.
What transportation options are there for Cotahuasi Canyon from Arequipa?
Hi there,
I’m planning to visit the Cotahuasi area in a few months.
I’d like to know which bus companies operate the Arequipa to Cotahuasi route and which ones are the safest in terms of avoiding accidents.
Is the road passable if we rent a car to get there?
Has anyone reading this traveled by car to this destination?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
What are the different ways to get to Machu Picchu?
Hi there, since there isn’t much recent info on how to get to MP, I’d love to know if there have been any improvements to the "route" to Hydroelectrica. Is it feasible to drive there in February? And is it still possible to walk all the way to Aguas Calientes? I think I read somewhere that it’s no longer allowed??
Do you think I can buy Machu Picchu entrance tickets last-minute at that time of year, given the weather?
Route questions in Peru and a side trip to Chile
Hi everyone,
After a lot of hesitation due to the season, I finally booked my tickets to Lima from June 30 to March 11—I’ll be crossing my fingers for the weather!
We’re planning the classic southern loop with a rental car, either the whole thing or part of it.
I’ve got a ton of questions:
Is it possible to drive to the Salinas y Aguada Blanca Reserve with our own vehicle?
Is the road to Cusco (the 34 E) in good condition?
Is it better to return via Andahuaylas, Pampachiri, Nazca? Or through Ayacucho toward Paracas?
I’m also hesitating about heading to the Cordillera Blanca and pushing on to Trujillo and Chan Chan because of the weather. The other option would be to spend a week or 10 days in northern Chile, which I think is amazing...
So, if you’ve got any tips or suggestions?

Moving and luggage between Palccoyo and Puno
Hi, how did you all organize your luggage for your excursions?
For example, if we plan a hike to Palccoyo by taxi, can the driver keep our suitcases and then drive us to Puno?
Thanks for your feedback. »
Have you heard of Avianca for a Cusco-La Paz flight?
CUSCO-LA PAZ FLIGHT
Hi, I’d like to fly from Cusco to LA PAZ (to save time… so I don’t want to deal with a canceled flight).
Any feedback on Avianca? (It’s the only direct flight I’ve found.)
Thanks
Questions about accommodations and trekking poles for doing the Cañón del Colca trek solo
Hi there,
I’m planning to do the full Cañón del Colca trek in 3 stages (Cabanaconde/Llahuar/Sagalle/San Juan/Cabanaconde), if the weather allows it, of course.
Are trekking poles allowed in Peru? I don’t want to carry them unnecessarily. (I don’t have rubber tips since they’re trail-running poles.)
Do you have any tips on accommodations? Should I book in advance, or is there always somewhere to stay? (I’ll be there at the end of October or in November.)
All advice and tips are welcome!
Thanks
Bus from Cusco Airport to the city center
Hi,
Does anyone know how late the buses run from Cusco Airport to the city center? I land at 9:30 PM, plus time to clear customs, pick up my luggage, and exchange some money—figure an extra 30 to 45 minutes. Though, come to think of it, I still have 5 sols from last time—maybe that’ll be enough for the bus?
Thanks.
Brigitte
Bus from Colca Canyon to Arequipa? Peru
Thanks for the replies.
I'm looking for a bus that takes me from Colca Canyon to Arequipa—I can’t find anything online (I only see Chivay to Puno, but I’m doing it the other way around).
Where to stay in Colca Canyon and find a bus to Arequipa?
hi there
(mid-August 2025), I’m arriving in COLCA CANYON from PUNO by bus to stay for 3 days
I’ll be on foot
what’s the best place to sleep since I’ll be hiking
then I’m taking a bus to AREQUIPA but I can’t find any info about it
only thing I’ve seen is that I’ll find a collectivo in CHIVAY
can you give me some tips to organize this as smoothly as possible
thanks ISABELLE
Safe spot for camper/RV near Hidroelectrica before Machu Picchu
Hi everyone,
Apart from the road between Cusco and Hidroelectrica—which is tricky but doable—is there a safe place (like a campsite?) to sleep at Hidroelectrica and visit Machu Picchu the next day? Thanks!
Rental vehicle equipment for winter mountain driving in Peru
Hi there,
We’re heading to Peru from February 3 to 27, 2025. From the 12th to the 23rd, we’ll be traveling through high-altitude areas above 4,000 meters between Arequipa and Puno, Puno and Cuzco, and then Cuzco and Nazca. My question is whether we might encounter snowy roads, and if so, whether rental vehicles (a standard tourist car rented at Lima airport) come equipped with chains or anything similar. Thanks in advance! Eric
