Some trips are born twice - Peru April - May 2025
Clever! 😛 Now that I’ve really dug into your Bolivia travel journal, I’m also itching to go—especially since we love deserts...
Crossing the Chile-Argentina border by rental car
The rental company provides a whole stack of documents that the customs officers stamp with pleasure, and the border post you mentioned makes you lose 1 hour but doesn’t cause any issues.
Road conditions between San Pedro de Atacama and Salta, Argentina
Update.
We ended up doing the round trip on the same route, meaning the northern route, the easiest one. For gas, no issues with the current tanks—the Susques station only takes cash, but it’s not essential to fill up there since you can make it from San Pedro de Atacama to Tilcara without any problems. We had a hybrid SUV that only consumed 5 L per 100 km, but I still had half a tank left.

Update. We rented from LYS... But one or even two bad surprises at the Sixt counter at Calama Airport. Number one, LYS probably didn’t forward my email requesting to cross the Argentine border, which I had sent two months earlier with all the supporting documents. The woman pulls a face and makes it clear it’s going to be complicated... Great. She contacts them, there’s a lot of back-and-forth, and in short, she says it’ll be okay but we’ll have to wait. She asks us to pay the deposit by credit card—no problem, or so we thought... Our cards aren’t deferred debit cards but regular debit cards, so it’s not possible to validate the payment. We explain, I try with my business card—same issue. I offer to pay, have them debit me (still 2000 €), and she says yes, but the refund will take a long time upon return. How long? Three months!! Luckily, our 23-year-old son with us has a PayPal subscription. We sort it out after much back-and-forth with LYS so they accept 1000 € debited immediately and a refund within 48 hours upon return. In short, we lost 3 hours in Calama. I had specifically booked a 6 a.m. flight in Santiago to have time to visit the area around San Pedro de Atacama... Ugh... Anyway, for our next trip to South America, we’re considering getting an American Express just to have a "credit" card. They refunded the 1000 € about a week after returning the vehicle. But 33 € in PayPal fees.
The worst part is that in Punta Arenas, in the same country (Chile), the rental company Dachelet took the deposit with our debit card without any issues. By the way, Dachelet was great in Punta Arenas.

So, my wife is the one who keeps the travel journals, and it’s really time-consuming—I’m not sure she’ll want to... We went to Argentine Patagonia and northern Chile, stopping in Calama, then San Pedro de Atacama. From there, we took a west-east route crossing into Argentina toward Purmamarca. We were supposed to go to Salta, but since we hadn’t spent enough time in San Pedro de Atacama, we decided to go back to really enjoy that amazing spot. Personally, I’d been dreaming of going to Patagonia for 15 years, and I wasn’t disappointed. I’ll try to convince my wife to make a journal... 😉

OK, what you're saying is reassuring. I’d be really tempted by a 4x4 with a roof tent so I don’t always have to rely on hotels, but safety-wise, how is it in the middle of nowhere? Otherwise, hiring a driver like you did—I get the impression the budget works out about the same.
Thanks anyway.
PS: Bolivia is tempting me too.

Hi there, I loved your travel journal—it’s giving me a serious case of wanderlust! We just got back from a trip to Chile and Argentina that we really enjoyed.
One question: I don’t think you mentioned it in your journal, but what’s the security situation like in terms of theft, etc.? Looking at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs map, which can sometimes be alarmist, there’s an area controlled by drug traffickers right near Machu Picchu... 🏴☠️
Thanks for your thoughts and insights! Have a great evening, Raf.

Road conditions between San Pedro de Atacama and Salta, Argentina
Hi, thanks for all the details. So, the southern route is indeed riskier than the northern one, especially with a car that’s not built for potentially tough sections. We’ve settled on a Hyundai Tucson 4x4, but it’s no Hilux.
So maybe a round trip on the same northern route... Something to think about.
Thanks. Raf

Road conditions between San Pedro de Atacama and Salta, Argentina
Hi,
we’re planning a round trip from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, to Salta, Argentina, in two months. On the way there, we’ll take the northern route via Susques, Route 27, then 52. But for the return, we were thinking of taking the southern route via San Antonio de los Cobres, Route 51, then 23. Is it similar to the northern route in terms of road surface? How busy is it, and are there gas stations? Basically, should we be worried about doing it in an SUV that’s supposedly 4x4 but has regular road tires and no second spare wheel, obviously...
I’ve seen that we can stop over in San Antonio de los Cobres.
Thanks for your feedback.
Raf.

Looking for a car rental in Calama
Hi,
we’ll be in Calama at the end of March 2026, and I’m looking for a reliable car rental there for a 7-day road trip to Salta, Argentina. But I’m struggling with the car rental agencies in Calama because the reviews can be scary. I saw Gyg, which has great ratings, but I’m a bit wary (5/5 from 59 reviews—either the guy’s amazing or it’s fake...), but I can’t find any recent reviews on VF in general.
For Punta Arenas, I booked with Dachelet and didn’t have any issues with email exchanges.
Thanks in advance.
Raf.
Various ideas to revive/improve the site
Hi Agnès,
The mailing list doesn’t seem to be in great shape (we didn’t receive anything either), but it looks like telepathy is working just fine—I happened to do a search yesterday completely by chance and... miracle... new messages! Oh joy!
Looking forward to more reading and shared tips.

Groenland 2019

Anne-Marie
